Comparison of Harold Pinter’s “The Birthday Party” and “The Homecoming” with a Special Focus on the Female Characters by Sandra Beez Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, , language: English, abstract: Pinter’s plays are good examples for the theatre of the absurd, although Pinter himself probably would not have called them this way. He knew how to create his characters in such an absurd way, but also realistic at the same time that the audience was often left in astonishment and confusion. This paper will deal with the two Pinter plays “The Birthday Party” and “The Homecoming”. These are outstanding plays, foremost concerning the female characters. Both plays include mainly male characters and one outstanding female one. There is a second female character in “The Birthday Party”, but she only plays a minor role. It is interesting to see how Pinter contrasts the more or less strong female characters in otherwise all men plays. That is why this paper will pay special attention to the female characters. This paper will start by first giving an overview over the plays and short characterisations of the male characters. Furthermore, there will be a comparison between those two plays and in how far Pinter’s plays may have developed. Continuing, I am going to focus on the female characters of the plays, Meg and Ruth. First, I will discuss the representation of women in the plays in general. Then, there will be a comparison between the two characters to see in how far their characteristics and their function in the plays differ.

Sharp Cut by Steven H. Gale Pdf

Best known as one of the most important playwrights of the twentieth century, Harold Pinter has also written many highly regarded screenplays, including Academy Award-nominated screenplays for The French Lieutenant's Woman and Betrayal, collaborations with English director Joseph Losey, and an unproduced script for the remake of Stanley Kubrick's 1962 adaptation of Lolita. In this definitive study of Pinter's screenplays, Steven H. Gale compares the scripts with their sources and the resulting films, analyzes their stages of development, and shows how Pinter creates unique works of art by extracting the essence from his source and rendering it in cinematic terms. Gale introduces each film, traces the events that led to the script's writing, examines critical reaction to the film, and provides an extensive bibliography, appendices, and an index.

Harold Pinter's Comedies of Menace. Fear and Control in "The Birthday Party" by Lukas Szpeth Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,5, University of Trier (Anglistik), course: Proseminar Harold Pinter, language: English, abstract: Converging comedy and fear, that is a strange art practiced in the comedies of menace. One of the most prominent authors who intermingles the two in his plays is Harold Pinter. But what is the role of menace and fear in a comic play? To examine this question closer the present term paper looks at the role of fear in one of Harold Pinter's first plays, namely his first full length play The Birthday Party. As we will see none of the characters in the play is free from fear. Especially the main character Stanley, the permanent guest in Meg's boarding house, is hounded by his emotions. To begin with I will discuss how Pinter came to choose such a devastating theme and work on it to figure out the fear in the play, along with the emotions and actions it affects. Hereby the menace that the outside world projects on the main character Stanley will be an important factor.

Pinter's Odd Man Out by Sidney Homan Pdf

"Pinter's Odd Man Out records Sidney Homan's experience directing the playwright's Old Times for both stage and television. His most commercially successful play, and surely one of his best, no other work of Pinter's has generated more critical and scholarly commentary - or more varied, sometimes conflicting readings." "In the two opening chapters Homan surveys the theatrical and critical history of the play before describing the "generic" world of Pinter that provides the context of Old Times: secluded rooms, their occupants, and the visitor who, in seeking entrance, challenges the room's exclusive yet deceptive serenity; the outside and the threat it poses; the subtext pressing on the dialogue; the power of the past and perception; the "presence" of the play itself; characters who function as artists; the issue of gender; mother and father figures; and the silence of Pinter's pauses." "Homan then describes his company's preparations for the performance, ranging from the director's concept, the set, props, costumes, lighting, and music to blocking and the rehearsal period. After his own account of the stage production and the ways in which the audience "taught" the performers through their reactions to and discoveries about the play, Homan turns to his actors (Stephanie Dugan, Thomas Pender, and Sandra Langsner) who, in their own words, describe how they wrestled with the characters of Kate, Deeley, and Anna from rehearsals to performance." "A chapter on "The Camera as Guest" records the experience of filming the stage play. Here the focus is on the technological and aesthetic differences between the media of television and the stage, and what effect such differences had on the filmed version of Old Times. To what degree does the camera allow the director to assert more control? What changes in blocking, set, and lighting were required?" "In an appendix Homan looks at Carol Reed's 1950s film Odd Man Out, which figures prominently in Old Times, and which may have been a source (in a highly flexible use of that term) for the play." "On the surface, Pinter's Odd Man Out concentrates on a single play. In reality, it is about the ways in which people in the theatre approach a production, the process they go through from rehearsals to opening night, and the complex interaction among playwright, director, actors, and audience. It also raises the issue of what happens when a work intended for the stage is translated to another medium, such as television. If the book at times suggests that the worlds of the scholar and the theatre professional are different, indeed incompatible in some ways, it also shows how the two professions can learn from each other."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
