Indonesia is on the cusp of transformative take-off, poised to become a major economic power not just in Asia, but also on the global-stage. This book is a pioneering attempt in comprehensively assessing all attributes, conditions and policies for 33 Indonesian provinces and Indonesia's trajectory as an emerging middle power. It contains papers and data-sets presented in July 2012, at ACI's signature Annual Conference. The information that was shared at the conference and presented in the book posit a future where tens of millions of Indonesians will be lifted out of poverty to become a self-sustaining middle-class, which will in turn drive the country into a global leadership role in the 21st century. Prof. Kuntoro Mangkusubroto Head of President's Delivery Unit for Development Monitoring and Oversight (UKP4) 2009–2014 "This competitiveness research for Indonesia's provinces adds strategic value to improve the quality of our democracy. It is to link the economic benefits and competitiveness to political accountability, which is critical to both any elected officials and more importantly, to constituents and voters over what have been achieved during certain period of time. The notion of competitiveness becomes even more relevant, not only to drive economic growth per se but also to achieve sustainable economic development." 2014 Annual Provincial and Regional Competitiveness Analysis for Greater China Economies by Khee Giap Tan,Randong Yuan,Sangiita Wei Cher Yoong Pdf

' After more than three decades of rapid growth, China is now entering into the New Normal Era, which will be characterised by slower but sustainable, quality growth for several decades to come. How China will fare under the New Normal Era matters not only for itself but also for its great impact on global prosperity. While presenting as the second instalment of ACI''s annual tracking of the dynamics of competitiveness among 34 Greater China economies, this volume also includes the results of the inaugural regional competitiveness analysis for five regions of Greater China. As regional imbalance in socioeconomic advancement is a serious issue China has to face up to under the New Normal Era, the results of such competitiveness analysis at provincial and regional levels offer insights for policy-makers to help address concerns associated with the regional disparity in development, and facilitate industry leaders and other stakeholders in identifying challenges and opportunities for sound decision making. ACI has done a remarkable job in tracking and analysing the evolving competitiveness landscape of East Asia and particularly Greater China, resulting in many excellent research findings, which are of great reference value to East Asian countries and the whole world. Shandong Academy of Social Sciences will take every opportunity to cooperate with ACI to study economic development in Shandong province and its neighbouring regions." Dr Tang Zhouyan Dean Shandong Academy of Social Sciences People''s Republic of China "In the debate of pressing socioeconomic issues, there has never been a shortage of advice purely hinged on qualitative reasoning or theoretical arguments. What is lacking in public policy discourse is an evidence-based, quantitative approach driven by objective analysis of empirical data, which is exactly what is embodied in the methodology crafted by ACI to gauge competitiveness at sub-national levels. Therefore, the messages conveyed here will form an invaluable source of reference to inspire better government policy formulation as well as business strategic planning." The Riau Islands by Francis E Hutchinson,Siwage Dharma Negara Pdf

To Singapore’s immediate south, Indonesia’s Riau Islands has a population of 2 million and a land area of 8,200 sq kilometers scattered across some 2,000 islands. The better-known islands include Batam, the province’s economic motor; Bintan, the area’s cultural heartland and site of the provincial capital, Tanjungpinang; and Karimun, a ship-building hub strategically located near the Straits of Malacca. Leveraging on its proximity to Singapore, the Riau Islands—and particularly Batam—has been a key part of Indonesia’s strategy to develop its manufacturing sector since the 1990s. In addition to generating a large number of formal sector jobs and earning foreign exchange, this reorientation opened the way for a number of far-reaching political and social developments. Key among them has been: large-scale migration from other parts of the country; the secession of the Riau Islands from the larger Riau Province; and the creation of a new provincial government. Building on earlier work by the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute on the SIJORI Cross-Border Region, spanning Singapore, the Malaysian state of Johor, and the Riau Islands, and a second volume looking specifically at Johor, the third volume in this series explores the key challenges facing this fledgling Indonesian province.
