Complete History of the South African War, in 1899-1902 by F. T. Stevens Pdf

Excerpt from Complete History of the South African War, in 1899-1902 In order to publish a work of this kind immediately on the termination of hostilities, it becomes inevitable that the course of events should be recorded chronologically rather than that any department of the campaign should be dealt with consecutively and finally by itself. This imperative method has the advantage of showing the daily development of events over the whole area of the war, while it has what may be considered the drawback of discursiveness from the introduction of innumerable facts and features of the struggle without any immediate connection with each other. When the effort is to present a history of facts as complete as possible for research, rather than a picturesque story of leading battles, this compilation of heterogeneous matter is unavoidable, even if classified under many headings. There is one set off to discursiveness. An exhaustive, sustained, and graphic description of a number of battles, one after the other, is a strain upon the feelings that is neither pleasant nor wholesome. In order to wade through and grasp the whole of the details with intelligence and composure, there must be the mental relief afforded by the admixture of diversified particulars. Many events have been stated in briefest form. To paint everything in strong colours and in mlnutiƓ would give scope for fine writing and piquant reading, but the chronicle could not also be compressed into a cheap, single, popular volume for the million. Excerpt from The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 2 IN the preceding volume the political causes of the South African War were traced from the British acquisition of Cape Colony down to the ultimatum presented to the British Government by the Transvaal on October 9, 1899. The military antecedents of that war, and the narrative of the first three months of fighting, from the expiration of the ultimatum down to the battle of Colenso, form the contents of the present volume. History of the War in South Africa, Vol. 1 by Frederick Maurice Pdf

Excerpt from History of the War in South Africa, Vol. 1: 1899-1902 The decision of His Majesty's late Government, mentioned on the first page of this history, was not finally given till November, 1905. It was, therefore, not till December 12th, 1905, that I was able to obtain approval for the form in which the political facts connected with the war are mentioned in the first chapter. Since then the whole volume has necessarily been recast, and it was not possible to go to page proof till the first chapter had been approved. Hence the delay in the appearance of the volume. I took over the work from Colonel Henderson in July, 1903. He had not then written either narrative of, or comments on, the. The Colonials in South Africa, 1899-1902 by John Stirling Pdf

Excerpt from The Colonials in South Africa, 1899-1902: Their Record, Based on the Despatches When the Author published his 'Our Regiments in South Africa, 1899-1902, ' which gave a brief account of the work, in the war, of each regular battalion of infantry, regiment of cavalry, and battery of artillery, he remarked in the Preface that "Some account of the doings of the Colonials should, and may yet, be put together." Some reviewers, especially those interested in the Colonies, encouraged him to carry out the idea thus hinted at, and the present volume is the result of that encouragement. No attempt has been made to write a detailed account of the work of each corps, but it has been the Author's aim to give a fair idea of the value of the services of each. Excerpt from The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 4 The composition of the present volume differs from that of its predecessors to the extent that, whereas in the former volumes the actual narrative as it, appeared, though based on the contributions of various collaborators, was mainly written by myself, I have in the present case confined myself strictly to the purely editorial task of criticism and suggestion. The volume as it stands is the work of Mr. Basil Williams, and he is responsible alike for the accuracy of the detailed facts recorded and for the judgments and criticisms expressed. This delegation of a difficult, laborious, and responsible task has made it possible to publish, within a year of its predecessor, a volume which it has taken fully two years of continuous effort to write. History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 2 by Frederick Maurice Pdf

Excerpt from History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 2: Compiled by Direction of His of Majesty's Government In sending round these proofs for comment, I am anxious to appeal to all who can throw light upon any points within their knowledge to do so. Now that the first volume has been published, it must, I think, be clear to all that our only object has been to state the true facts as far as we are able to get at them. This seems to have been generally recognised but our success entirely depends on our obtaining all the criticism and evidence we can. The first drafts of the first volume were very different from the text as published; but, though this was due to the evidence we subsequently obtained from those to whom they were sent, yet in many instances the corrections were furnished with ex pressions of great indignation that the account was not in accord ance with facts known to the writer, but not previously supplied to us. We cannot make bricks without straw; and though the mass of material to be dealt with is very great, it often fails us at important points. It is to fill in these deficiencies that we submit the story as we have it, to those who can give us better evidence. On one point a fiction has gone abroad which may much interfere with this. It has been freely stated that the volume was much 'sub-edited' in the interest of Departments concerned. There is not one word of truth in this. We have held no brief for anyone and no Department or Office has asked us to modify one word in their own interest. The only subject on which any Office asked for change was that mentioned on page 1, Volume I., viz., any phrase that might affect our relations with our Boer fellow-subjects. Otherwise the narrative has been written exactly as we should have written it if we had been pub lishing a volume on our own account, except that under no other circumstances whatever could we have had complete evidence as to the truth. The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 3 (Classic Reprint) by Leopold Stennett Amery Pdf

Excerpt from The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 3 The favourable reception accorded three years ago to the second volume of the present work, both by subscribers and by the general public, in spite of the considerable delays which had attended its publication, encouraged me in the belief that I should do right in proceeding on the same lines, and in subordinating all other considerations to the en deavour to produce a thoroughly trustworthy and convincing narrative. Circumstances were, in many ways, more favour able to my undertaking than they had been before. The conclusion of the war enabled me to visit many of the battle fields I had been unable to see during the progress of hostilities, and has since brought within my reach a vast amount of information previously inaccessible. These favouring conditions have not only greatly amplified the evidence available with regard to the details of the various operations, but have given me a much fuller insight into the inner mechanism of the campaign, into the motives and ideas on both sides, of which the struggle on the battlefield was but the outward and visible expression. The result is a volume which, I venture to think, is in many respects a decided improvement upon its predecessor. But the result has only been attained at the cost of a great increase of the labour involved, and of a protracted delay which has, I am well aware, sorely taxed the patience of subscribers. The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 5 (Classic Reprint) by Leopold Stennett Amery Pdf

Excerpt from The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 5 The military aim which the British people and the British Army had set before themselves at the outbreak of the war had been achieved, and more than achieved, by the close of the first year. In his great marches, from Modder River Camp to the Portuguese frontier, Lord Roberts had swept away the stubborn resistance of the Boer armies, had triumphantly occupied all the chief towns of the two Republics, and had securely established himself upon the great arteries of communication. After Komati Poort there was no longer a single compact, centrally organised and centrally equipped Boer force in the field; the Boer artillery had almost disappeared; on every side the burghers were coming in to assure the conquerors that the surrender of those who were still in arms was but a matter of a few days or at the outside weeks. Few, indeed, there were who recognised that the British aim had been set too low, or understood the magnitude and character of the task that still lay between Lord Kitchener and the realisation of the national purpose expressed in the formal annexation of the Republics. Excerpt from Naval Brigades in the South African War, 1899-1900 Despite the fact that so much has already been written on the subject, I feel assured that this little contribution to the history Of the struggle in South Africa needs neither explanation nor excuse. It is the story Of how, at a time when their comrades of the land service were in dire need of help, the seamen hastened to place their ships' guns on improvised carriages, took them ash ore, and in the nick of tims enabled our military forces to cope on equal terms with the Boer artillery.
