Dispersing the Fog by Paul Palango Pdf

In 1874, the first contingent of the North West Mounted Police headed out from Ontario, following the Dawson Trail to their new posts in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Over the next 133 years, the Mounties evolved from those 150 cavalry men to become a police force with almost 16,000 officers and almost 10,000 civilians with an annual budget of $4-billion. There is no police service in the world like it, and for good reason. Over time the NWMP became the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, an iconic police force with a mythical reputation. The reality, however, is that the Mounties rarely got their man and that their collective reputation was undeserved. For more than 35 years the RCMP has found itself mired in a seemingly unending litany of organizational, legal and political controversy, but the Mounties always managed to survive virtually unscathed. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, however, long had a plan to stop the Mounties in their tracks. After taking office in early 2006, the pieces of that plan began to fall into place, as Harper shrewdly began the process to deconstruct and reform of the RCMP, specifically, and the country in general. Did he do it for the right reasons or the wrong ones? Did he go far enough or not? Will Canada be the better for it? In Dispersing the Fog , Paul Palongo builds on the powerful and influential arguments made in his first two RCMP books, Above The Law and The Last Guardians , to show Canadians why they should be concerned about the RCMP, its mandate, its performance and its relationship to governments and politics. No other author knows the subject matter better than Palongo. Once a voice in the wilderness, many Canadians now have come to believe what he has to say. Dispersing the Fog is not just a book about the RCMP, but a story about the justice system in general and a wake-up call for any Canadian concerned about where the country seems to be headed. Itās thorough debunking of the many myths of the RCMP, which the federal and provincial governments have encouraged and nurtured for their own political purposes. It takes the reader on a step-by-step, virtually invisible, process which Stephen Harper and his allies from the former Alberta Reform Party have taken to make true their vision of Alberta, having the same rights and status in Confederation as Ontario and Quebec. It addresses the role played by politicians and the media, in general, who have collectively failed to recognize and address the very real and articulate concerns of Canadians from coast to coast who have long questioned the ability or willingness of the RCMP to carry out its duties. No one who cares about democracy can afford to ignore this book.

Canadian Indian Cowboys in Australia by Lynda Mannik Pdf

In 1939, a troupe of eight rodeo riders, accompanied by an RCMP officer, travelled to Sydney, Australia to compete in the Royal Easter Show. The men were expected to compete in various rodeo events, as well as to sell handicrafts at the fair's "Indian village," where they also camped. International competition in rodeo was very rare at the time, and the team proved to be a popular draw for Australian audiences. This little-known moment in Canadian history is explored in Canadian Indian Cowboys in Australia.

22 Murders by Paul Palango Pdf

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER A shocking exposé of the deadliest killing spree in Canadian history, and how police tragically failed its victims and survivors. As news broke of a killer rampaging across the tiny community of Portapique, Nova Scotia, late on April 18, 2020, details were oddly hard to come by. Who was the killer? Why was he not apprehended? What were police doing? How many were dead? And why was the gunman still on the loose the next morning and killing again? The RCMP was largely silent then, and continued to obscure the actions of denturist Gabriel Wortman after an officer shot and killed him at a gas station during a chance encounter. Though retired as an investigative journalist and author, Paul Palango spent much of his career reporting on Canada’s troubled national police force. Watching the RCMP stumble through the Portapique massacre, only a few hours from his Nova Scotia home, Palango knew the story behind the headlines was more complicated and damning than anyone was willing to admit. With the COVID-19 lockdown sealing off the Maritimes, no journalist in the province knew the RCMP better than Palango did. Within a month, he was back in print and on the radio, peeling away the layers of this murderous episode as only he could, and unearthing the collision of failure and malfeasance that cost a quiet community 22 innocent lives.

The Red Wall by Jane Hall Pdf

Since 1977, people have asked Jane Hall over and over what it was like to have been among the first few female members in the RCMP, and, like so many of her peers, she has avoided answering the question. How could one sentence do the question justice? Finally, after years of thoughtful contemplation, she has borrowed a phrase from the father of one of the original members of the North West Mounted Police--Sub-Inspector Francis Dickens : "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." But the reason for avoiding the answer, like the question itself, was a little more complex than simply not having the correct words. To truly tell the complete story, some of the bad as well as the good must be told; and that was why senior female members like Ms. Hall had chosen to remain silent, fearing that any abbreviated response could be misinterpreted or subverted to unfairly attack the RCMP. After all, it was the RCMP who broke new social and professional ground when it decided : "In the absence of any empirical evidence to the contrary, the assumption had to be that females would be capable of performing all the diversified duties in the Force equal to the males." The RCMP, the embodiment of the Canadian national identity, levelled the professional playing field for women, and by doing so, in this unprecedented leadership role the RCMP catapulted the women's movement forward, impacting the lives of women throughout North America--and quite possibly the world. Says Jane Hall : "It is time to break the silence; time to acknowledge our successes and our failures. Time to move forward."

No Easy Ride by Ian Parsons Pdf

On July 3, 1961, Ian Parsons reported to RCMP Depot Division in Regina as a raw recruit. It was the beginning of a 33-year adventure that took him from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island and many points between. By the time he retired with the rank of inspector, Parsons had a policeman’s trunk full of colourful stories and insightful observations that he now shares in this memoir. Parsons writes candidly of his many roles within the RCMP, from postings in rural detachments, where he dealt with diverse policing issues, to stints teaching at the Canadian Police College in Ottawa and at the RCMP Academy in Regina. Always an independent thinker, Parsons lectured sometimes-resistant RCMP senior officers on the adoption of new ways and helped introduce programs to modernize recruit training and make it more relevant to the demands of a rapidly changing Canadian society. In recent years, Parsons has observed the troubled state and tarnished reputation of his beloved force as it faces crisis after crisis. Against the entertaining backdrop of his life in red serge, he gives a thoughtful assessment of things gone wrong in the iconic institution and identifies the drastic steps necessary to save it.
