Compotus Rolls by Priory Of St. Swithun Pdf
Excerpt from Compotus Rolls: Of the Obedientiaries of St. Swithun's Priory, Winchesterfrom the Winchester Cathedral Archives This volume of Obedientiary Rolls is the chief publication of the Hampshire Record Society for 1892; and the members will be pleased to see that it is issued within the current year. The slender income of the Society is not sufficient to give the subscribers two volumes every year; and as two books have been issued for 1891, and it is hoped that two will appear in 1893, the Council are obliged thus to husband their resources for 1892. I believe that no collection of Obedientiary Rolls has heretofore been printed. There is a very fine collection of such Rolls in Norwich Cathedral, well cared for by their learned and judicious custodian, Dr. Bensley. The Norwich Rolls are often strong where ours are weak; and it is much to be hoped that they will someday be printed, and be both preserved from the many risks which lie in wait for ancient documents, and also made accessible to the student of Church History. Music in Medieval and Early Modern Europe by Iain Fenlon Pdf
This volume consists of original papers first read at King's College, Cambridge, in 1979 at an international conference on medieval and Renaissance music. The contributors are distinguished in a wide variety of musicological interests but all are concerned in one way or another with pursuing the most urgent and promising directions for research in early music history. The result, far from being merely a further collection of essays applying well-tried approaches to familiar material, constantly seeks to expand the scope of musicology itself, and many of the contributions arc inter-disciplinary in method. The four main topics of the conference were carefully chosen, with some editorial control exercised for each session. This is reflected in four sections of closely related papers in the book. Two of these are concerned with the patronage of music: by the Church in fifteenth-century England, Italy and France, and in a broader context in Italy from 1450 to 1550. A group of essays on sixteenth-century instrumental music separates these, and the book concludes with five papers on theories of filiation as applied to music sources from the tenth to the sixteenth century.

Revolution and Consumption in Late Medieval England by Michael A. Hicks Pdf
Conspicuous consumption in the 15th century both offers causes for revolt and allows reconstruction of regional supply and trading networks. The essays in this volume focus on the sources and resources of political power, on consumption (royal and lay, conspicuous and everyday) on political revolution and on economic regulation in the later middle ages. Topics range from the diet of the nobility in the fifteenth century to the knightly household of Richard II and the peace commissions, while particular case studies, of Middlesex, Cambridge, Durham Cathedral and Winchester, shed new light on regional economies through an examination of the patterns of consumption, retailing, and marketing.Professor MICHAEL HICKS teaches at King Alfred's College at Winchester.Contributors: CHRISTOPHER WOOLGAR, ALASTAIR DUNN, SHELAGH MITCHELL, ALISON GUNDY, T.B. Monks and Markets by Miranda Threlfall-Holmes Pdf
The institutions of the middle ages are generally seen as tradition-bound; Monks and Markets challenges this assumption. Durham's outstanding archive has allowed the uncovering of an unprecedented level of detail about the purchasing strategies of one of England's foremost monasteries, and it is revealed that the monks were indeed reflective, responsive, and innovative when required. If this is true of a large Benedictine monastery, it is likely to be true also for the vast majority of other households and institutions in Medieval England for which comparable evidence does not exist. Furthermore, this study gives a unique insight into the nature of medieval consumer behaviour, which throughout history, and particularly from before the early modern period, remains a relatively neglected subject. Chapters are devoted to the diet of monks, the factors influencing their purchasing decisions, their use of the market and their exploitaiton of tenurial relationships, and their suppliers.
