Computer-mediated Communication for Distance Education by Rosalie Wells Pdf

One of the most recent technological systems to be adopted for use in distance education is computer-mediated communication (CMC), which typically includes computer conferencing, electronic mail, and electronic bulletin boards. The purpose of this review is to provide teachers, researchers and administrators with a practical summary of current knowledge about design, teaching, and institutional issues in the use of CMC for distance education, and to consolidate the major questions and issues in order to provide a relatively comprehensive overview of the field at this point in time. The review, which focuses on empirical studies using CMC in distance education, is divided into four parts: (1) Designing a Course To Maximize the Potential of CMC; (2) Teaching Considerations; (3) Institutional Issues (including computer access and marketing, policy, and cost); and (4) two charts illustrating the educational and communication uses of CMC which emphasize the extent to which CMC has become an international phenomenon. Computer Mediated Communication and the Online Classroom: Distance learning by Zane L. Berge,Mauri P. Collins Pdf

This text, the third in a three-volume set, provides an analysis of the application of computer-mediated communication (CMC) in distance learning. The three volumes in this set are conceived as ""handbooks"" for individual teachers to help them implement computer-mediated communication (CMC) in their classrooms. The authors avoid as far as possible discussing hardware or software specifics, concentrating instead on content, pedagogy, instructional design and the mechanics of using CMC. All three volumes are written by and for practitioners who have bought into the value of CMC and now want to know how they can use it in their educational setting.

Computer Supported Collaborative Learning by Claire O'Malley Pdf

Although research in collaborative learning has a fairly long history, dating back at least to the early work of Piaget and Vygotsky, it is only recently that workers have begun to apply some of its findings to the design of computer based learning systems. The early generation of the!le systems focused on their potential for supporting individual learning: learning could be self paced; teaching could be adapted to individual learners' needs. This was certainly the promise of the later generation of intelligent tutoring systems. However, this promise has yet to be realised. Not only are there still some very difficult research problems to solve in providing adaptive learning systems, but there are also some very real practical constraints on the widespread take up of individualised computer based instruction. Reseachers soon began to realise that the organisational, cultural and social contexts of the classroom have to be taken into account in designing systems to promote effective learning. Much of the work that goes on in classrooms is collaborative, whether by design or not. Teachers also need to be able to adapt the technology to their varying needs. Developments in technology, such as networking, have also contributed to changes in the way in which computers may be envisaged to support learning. In September 1989, a group of researchers met in Maratea, Italy, for a NATO-sponsored workshop on "Computer supported collaborative . learning". A total of 20 researchers from Europe (Belgium.

From Bulletin Boards to Electronic Universities by Morten Flate Paulsen Pdf

This monograph presents a collection of separate papers that focuses on pioneering projects in computer-mediated communication (CMC) and distance education. The first section of the monograph contains two papers describing the author's experiences with CMC projects that formed the foundation for his further CMC work: "NKI Electronic College," a distance education program using computer conferencing at NKI College in Oslo (Norway); and "Teaching Across the Atlantic," a computer-conference-based course conducted by experts form both sides of the Atlantic. In the second section, two papers--"Innovative Computer-Conferencing Courses" and "Computer-Mediated Communication and Distance Education around the World, An Annotated Bibliography"--provide 16 examples of the CMC projects in 12 countries the author has encountered through literature reviews and personal communications. Three articles that compile experiences, conclusions, and predictions for the future based on the author's perceptions and theories are presented in the final section: "GO MEEC," which describes a goal-oriented method for establishment of an electronic college; "The Electronic University," which predicts the development of future electronic universities; and "The Hexagon of Cooperative Freedom," which proposes a distance education theory attuned to CMC. Most of the papers include references; a total of 79 references are contained overall. (KRN)
