Measure of the Moon by Zdenek Kopal,C.L. Goudas Pdf

After many decades spent in astronomical semi-obscurity, the Moon has of late suddenly emerged to claim renewed interest on the part of the students of astronomy, as well as of other branches of physical science and technology; and the reasons which brought this about are indeed of historical significance. From time immemorial, astronomy has been debarred from the status of a gen uine experimental science by the utter remoteness of the objects of its study. With the exception of meteors - those small freaks of cosmic matter intercepted by the Earth on its perpetual journey through space - the properties of all celestial bodies outside the gravitational confines of our planet could be studied only at a distance: namely, from the effect of attraction exerted by their masses; or from the ciphered message of their light brought to us by nimble-footed photons across the intervening gaps of space. A dramatic emergence of long-range rockets in the last decade bids fair to bring about a profound change in this situation. On September 13, 1959 - a memorable date in the history of human endeavour - a man-made missile of Russian origin crash landed on the surface of the Moon in the region of its Mare Imbrium, and thus ended the age-long separation of the Earth and its only natural satellite which lasted not less than 4t billion years.

Dynamics of Planets and Satellites and Theories of Their Motion by V.G. Szebehely Pdf

P. J. MESSAGE University of Liverpool The papers which comprise this volume were presented at Colloquium No. 41 of the International Astronimical Union, which was held in Cambridge, England, from the 17th to the 19th of August, 1976, and had as its subject 'Dynamics of Planets and Satellites and Theories of their Motion'. The Colloquium was held just prior to the XVIth General Assembly of the Union (which was held from 24th August to 2nd September, in Grenoble, France) to provide an opportunity for the presentation of research papers on a number of active and lively branches of Celestial Mechanics to a gathering of experts in the field, and for the stimulus of discussion of research problems of interest to participants. A number of papers testify to the progress being made in General Planetary Theory, the theories of motion of the minor planets, the Moon, and the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn, and to significant advances in both the general and restricted gravitational problems of three bodies. The Organizing Committee of the Colloquium was comprised of J. Chapront, R. L. Duncombe, J. Hadjidemetriou, Y. Kozai, B. Morando, J. Schubart, V. Szebehely, and P. J. Message (Chairman). The local Organizer was D. C. Heggie, to whose tireless efforts the success of the arrangements is due. IX LIST OF PARTICIPANTS N. Mean Distributions of Ozone Density Over North America, 1963-1964 by Wayne S. Hering,Thomas R. Borden Pdf

An interim summary of the ozone climate over North America has been prepared from AFCRL ozonesonde network observations made during 1963 and 1964 (AD-435 873, -604 880, -623 018). Mean bimonthly distributions of ozone density computed for individual network stations depict the average ozone structure as a function of altitude and season for the first two years of network operation. Data are also presented on the standard deviation of ozone density and the mean seasonal distributions along a meridional cross section extending from the Canal Zone to Greenland. A brief statistical analysis indicates that approximately 35 to 50 percent of the variance in the total ozone amount at middle and high latitudes is given by the fluctuations in ozone density in the 11- to 13-km or 13- to 15-km layers.
