In May 1979 the first international symposium on Computers in Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine was held at Norwalk Hospital-Yale University School of Medicine. Scientists from eigh teen different countries participated in the program which illus trated the importance of computer applications in critical care and respiratory physiology. This book presents the proceedings of the symposium. would I like to thank Miss Nancy Smith for her untiring efforts and excellent work in typing the manuscripts. Mr. Gary Jacobson and Mr. Thomas Haller have been invaluable in the computerized preparation of the manuscripts and in the use of word processing equipment. Medical engineering in Japan by K. Atsumi,F. Kajiya Pdf
The complete volume 12 of Medical Progress through Technology is devoted to the work of colleagues in Japan. Additionally, whole authority and responsibility both for the election of topics and for the reviewing procedure had been delegated to Guest Editors from Japan. What are the objectives of this special issue and why has Japan been elected to present itself in this way? International journals such as Medical Progress through Technology usually contain papers from authors all over the world. Such issues provide a rather comprehensive survey on different scientific projects but do not reflect the standard and extent of medical technology in a certain country. I think that issues like the present one give far better information on the actual state of research and development in a country than an irregular sequence of scientific reports. It is not intended that all future issues of Medical Progress through Technology will concern only national issues. The present issue is an exception. However, if the readers appreciate such an approach, then other national issues may be published. There are several reasons in favor of Japan preparing the first national issues. We all admire the history, tradition and culture of this country, but we are also impressed by the high standard of research, develop ment and technical realisation achieved in nearly all high technology fields. There is no doubt, that Japan is among the leading nations in the field of medical technology.

Recent Advances In Perinatal Medicine - Proceedings Of The 100th Course Of The International School Of Medical Sciences by T H Bloomfield,E V Cosmi,Gian Carlo Di Renzo,D F Hawkins Pdf
This volume is based on presentations at the fifth course on perinatal medicine held in the International School of Medical Sciences at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice, Sicily, in March 1996. It has had a prolonged gestation, but the presentations have been updated and thus the book will benefit perinatologists internationally. The introductory lecture, by philosopher Donald Evans, is of great interest, discussing the issues which all those involved in reproductive medicine, in its widest sense, are dealing with all the time but seldom think about or put in context. Subsequent papers deal with understanding the development and management of the fetus and newborn along lines which represent real progress in perinatal medicine. The epilogue, based on a seminar, will be a help to all those Europeans and others struggling to present their work in English language journals and books.
