Comrade Sister by Laurie R. Lambert Pdf

In 1979, the Marxist-Leninist New Jewel Movement under Maurice Bishop overthrew the government of the Caribbean island country of Grenada, establishing the People’s Revolutionary Government. The United States under President Reagan infamously invaded Grenada in 1983, staying until the New National Party won election, effectively dealing a death blow to socialism in Grenada. With Comrade Sister, Laurie Lambert offers the first comprehensive study of how gender and sexuality produced different narratives of the Grenada Revolution. Reimagining this period with women at its center, Laurie Lambert shows how the revolution must be recognized for its both productive and corrosive tendencies. Lambert argues that the literature of the Grenada Revolution exposes how the more harmful aspects of revolution are visited on, and are therefore more apparent to, women. Calling attention to the mark of black feminism on the literary output of Caribbean writers of this period, Lambert addresses the gap between women’s active participation in Caribbean revolution versus the lack of recognition they continue to receive.

Comrade Sisters: Women Black Panther Phb by Huggins SHAMES Pdf

* A long time coming, the first book to tell the story of the women of the Black Panther Party* A book that continues to resonate 50 years later in the age of George Floyd and Black Lives Matter* Contributions by over 50 women Party members, including Angela Davis, Fredrika Newton, and Barbara Easley-Cox* Supported by a major marketing and publicity campaign* Trade advertising with advance quotes in PW, LJ, and Shelf-Awareness* High profile events planned in NYC, WDC, Chicago, LA, SF (Venues such as the Schomburg Center, African-American History Museum, The New Yorker Festival, etc.)* Educational outreach to historically Black colleges and universities, as well as to colleges and universities with Black Studies, American Studies, Women's History, and Gender Studies programsMany of us have heard these three words: Black Panther Party. Some know the Party's history as a movement for the social, political, economic and spiritual upliftment of Black and indigenous people of colour - but to this day, few know the story of the backbone of the Party: the women. It's estimated that six out of ten Panther Party members were women. While these remarkable women of all ages and diverse backgrounds were regularly making headlines agitating, protesting, and organising, off-stage these same women were building communities and enacting social justice, providing food, housing, education, healthcare, and more. Comrade Sisters is their story. The book combines photos by Stephen Shames, who at the time was a 20-year-old college student at Berkeley. With the complete trust of the Black Panther Party, Shames took intimate, behind-the-scenes photographs that fully portrayed Party members' lives. This marks his third photo book about the Black Panthers and includes many never before published images.Ericka Huggins, an early Party member and leader along with Bobby Seale and Huey Newton, has written a moving text, sharing what drew so many women to the Party and focusing on their monumental work on behalf of the most vulnerable citizens. Most importantly, the book includes contributions from over fifty former women members - some well-known, others not - who vividly recall their personal experiences from that time. Other texts include a foreword by Angela Davis. All Power to the People.

Comrade by Jodi Dean Pdf

When people say “comrade,” they change the world In the twentieth century, millions of people across the globe addressed each other as “comrade.” Now, among the left, it’s more common to hear talk of “allies.” In Comrade, Jodi Dean insists that this shift exemplifies the key problem with the contemporary left: the substitution of political identity for a relationship of political belonging that must be built, sustained, and defended. Dean offers a theory of the comrade. Comrades are equals on the same side of a political struggle. Voluntarily coming together in the struggle for justice, their relationship is characterized by discipline, joy, courage, and enthusiasm. Considering the egalitarianism of the comrade in light of differences of race and gender, Dean draws from an array of historical and literary examples such as Harry Haywood, C.L.R. James, Alexandra Kollontai, and Doris Lessing. She argues that if we are to be a left at all, we have to be comrades.

Wigwam and War-path by Alfred Benjamin Meacham Pdf

From introduction: "The chapter in our National History which tells our dealings with the Indian tribes, from Plymouth to San Francisco, will be one of the darkest and most disgraceful in our annals. Fraud and oppression, hypocrisy and violence, open, high handed robbery and sly cheating, the swindling agent and the brutal soldier turned into a brigand, buying promotion by pandering to the hate and fears of the settlers, avarice and indifference to human life, and lust for territory, all play their parts in the drama. Except the Negro, no race will lift up, at the judgement seat, such accusing hands against this nation as the Indian."

My People Are Rising by Aaron Dixon Pdf

The founder of the Black Panther Party’s Seattle chapter recounts his life on the frontlines of the Black Power Revolution. Growing up in Seattle in the 1960s, Aaron Dixon dedicated himself to the Civil Rights movement at an early age. As a teenager, he joined Martin Luther King on marches to end housing discrimination and volunteered to help integrate schools. After King’s assassination in 1968, Dixon continued his activism by starting the Seattle chapter of the Black Panther Party at the age of nineteen. In My People Are Rising, Dixon offers a candid account of life in the Black Panther Party. Through his eyes, we see the courage of a generation that stood up to injustice, their political triumphs and tragedies, and the unforgettable legacy of Black Power. “This book is a moving memoir experience: a must read. The dramatic life cycle rise of a youthful sixties political revolutionary, my friend Aaron Dixon.” —Bobby Seale, founding chairman and national organizer of the Black Panther Party, 1966 to 1974

Comrade Sister by Laurie R. Lambert Pdf

"Comrade Sister looks at the literature of the Grenada Revolution (1979-1983) and that island revolution's relationship to gender and sexuality. Lambert looks at work by writers such as Merle Collins, Dionne Brand, George Lamming, Andrew Salkey, and Derek Walcott to consider Caribbean women subjects from different generations and class positions. She argues that the Grenada Revolution, while liberating in many regards, brought with it violent change and traumatic repetition of earlier forms of patriarchal and heterosexist oppression stemming from colonialism"--
