Comus by John Milton Pdf

Excerpt from Comus: A Mask Fortune is frequently favourable in the arrange. Ment of events: an escape from the enthusiasm of his politics might have rendered the great milton an uncouth Historian, and an unsuc cessful Dramatist. Comus Lycidas (Classic Reprint) by John Milton Pdf

Excerpt from Comus Lycidas Milton's life falls into three clearly defined divisions. The first period ends with the poets return, from Italy in 1639; the second at the Restoration in 1660, when release from the fetters of politics enabled him to remind the world that he was a great poet, if not a great controversialist; the third is brought to a close with his death in 1674. The poems given in the present volume date from the first of these periods; but we propose to summarise briefly the main events of all three. John Milton was born on December 9, 1608, in London. He came, in his own words, ex genere honesto. A family of Miltons had been settled in Oxfordshire since the reign of Elizabeth. The poet's father had been educated at an Oxford school, possibly as a chorister in one of the College choir-schools, and imbibing Anglican sympathies had conformed to the Established Church. For this he was disinherited by his father. He settled in London, following the profession of scrivener. A scrivener combined the occupations of lawyer and law-stationer. It appears to have been a lucrative calling; certainly John Milton (the poet was named after the father) attained to easy circumstances. Milton's Comus by John Milton Pdf

Excerpt from Milton's Comus: Edited With Introduction and Notes NO conscientious worker can edit or annotate any portion of the Poetical Works of Milton without an acknowledgment Of his indebtedness to David Masson, who devoted a score of years to his voluminous edition of the life and works of John Milton. The large size Of Masson's edition puts it out Of the reach of the ordinary student. The present work, while it follows in the footsteps of the nobler scholar in text, and for the most part takes his dictum in disputed renderings, aims to cover only those points that are necessary to an intelligent study of the poems included in its pages. Thanks are extended to Dr. Rice Of the Springfield Public Library, and Superintendent Cutter Of the Bos ton Athenaeum, for many courtesies in the way of library facilities during the preparation of this little volume. A Book of Cambridge Verse (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Edward Kellett Pdf

Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Milton's Arcades and Comus by A. Wilson Verity Pdf

Excerpt from Milton's Arcades and Comus: With Introduction, Notes and Indexes The text of the poems included in this volume is substantially that of Professor Masson's "Globe" edition of Milton's Poetical Works, 1877. I have to thank Messrs Macmillan and Co. for their courtesy in allowing me to use this text. In common with all recent editors of Milton I am under great obligations to Professor Masson. School-editions of Comus and Arcades I have avoided using. As some attention is paid in the notes to points of etymology, I may say that the authors from whom most of the information has been taken are Professor Skeat, Professor Earle, Dr Morris, and, for French words, Brachet. The New English Dictionary, too, has been consulted often. I have endeavoured to reproduce with correctness the views of the writers mentioned; and it need scarcely be added that responsibility for any errors that may be noticed rests with me.
