Concord Lectures on Philosophy, Comprising Outlines of All the Lectures at the Concord Summer School of Philosophy in 1882 by Concord School of Philosophy Pdf

Excerpt from Concord Lectures on Philosophy, Comprising Outlines of All the Lectures at the Concord Summer School of Philosophy in 1882: With an Historical Sketch N the Orchard House in Concord, Mass., in the room now the study of Dr. William T. Harris, began on July 15, 1879, the first term of the Concord Sum mer School of Philosophy. It was well attended and was received with much favor, more even than had been expected for so novel an enterprise. As a result, more ample accommodations were secured for 1880. Upon the hillside, only a few steps from the Orchard House, was erected the plain but convenient structure known as Hillside Chapel. For this purpose was taken a part of a fund of a thousand dollars given by Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson of New York City for the gen eral use of the school. An audience of a hundred and fifty can be accommodated in the chapel, and among the ornaments within are busts Of Plato. Pestalozzi, Ralph Waldo Emerson and A. Bronson Alcott. A mask of Anaxagoras hangs upon the wall, and over the mantel is an engraving of the School of Athens. Other engravings and photographs, which are changed from time to time, complete the list. Upon a low platform, in a wide alcove, stands the table at which the lecturers sit. Movable camp chairs and unpainted wooden chairs, ar ranged rather for comfort than in geo metrical figures, furnish the seats of the audience. The Legacy of Hegel by J.J. O'Malley,K.W. Algozin,H.P. Kainz,L.C. Rice Pdf

The present volume represents the proceedings of the Marquette Hegel Symposium, held at Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 2-5, 1970. The Symposium, celebrating the two-hundredth annivers ary of Hegel's birth, was presented under the combined sponsorship of the Philosophy Department of Marquette University, the American Coun cil of Learned Societies, and the Johnson Foundation of Racine, Wiscon sin. Its general theme embraced not only specific topics of interest in con temporary Hegel studies, but also the wider aspects of the influences and impact of Hegel's thought upon contemporary philosophical, political, and social problems. Principal contributors and panelists were selected for their scholarly achievements in Hegel studies and also in keeping with the broad view of the Hegelian legacy in current thought. All sessions of the Symposium were plenary, and designed for maximum discussion and in terchange among participants. The Symposium Committee regrets that it has not been feasible to incorporate the transcript of the discussions (ex cept for the round-table discussion on editing and translating Hegel) into this volume. The papers presented in each day's sessions are published here with editorial changes and corrections made by their respective authors. The papers by Professors Otto Poggeler and Eric Weil were originally trans lated by members of our Committee: the present versions incorporate many changes and corrections made by their authors. The comments on each paper were brought into their present form only after the Symposium, and in the light of the discussions which took place during it.

The Fate of Transcendentalism by Bruce A. Ronda Pdf

The Fate of Transcendentalism examines the mid-nineteenth-century flowering of American transcendentalism and shows the movement’s influence on several subsequent writers, thinkers, and artists who have drawn inspiration and energy from the creative outpouring it produced. In this wide-ranging study, Bruce A. Ronda offers an account of the movement as an early example of the secular turn in American culture and brings to bear insights from philosopher Charles Taylor and others who have studied the broad cultural phenomenon of secularization. Ronda’s account turns on the interplay and tension between two strands in the transcendentalist movement. Many of the social experiments associated with transcendentalism, such as the Brook Farm and Fruitlands reform communities, Temple School, and the West Street Bookshop, as well as the transcendentalists’ contributions to abolition and women’s rights, spring from a commitment to human flourishing without reference to a larger religious worldview. Other aspects of the movement, particularly Henry Thoreau’s late nature writing and the rich tradition it has inspired, seek to minimize the difference between the material and the ideal, the human and the not-human. The Fate of Transcendentalism allows readers to engage with this fascinating dialogue between transcendentalist thinkers who believe that the ultimate end of human life is the fulfillment of human possibility and others who challenge human-centeredness in favor a relocation of humanity in a vital cosmos. Ronda traces the persistence of transcendentalism in the work of several representative twentieth- and twenty-first-century figures, including Charles Ives, Joseph Cornell, Truman Nelson, Annie Dillard, and Mary Oliver, and shows how this dialogue continues to inform important imaginative work to this date.
