Conformal Dynamics and Hyperbolic Geometry by Francis Bonahon Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of the Conference on Conformal Dynamics and Hyperbolic Geometry, held October 21-23, 2010, in honor of Linda Keen's 70th birthday. This volume provides a valuable introduction to problems in conformal and hyperbolic geometry and one dimensional, conformal dynamics. It includes a classic expository article by John Milnor on the structure of hyperbolic components of the parameter space for dynamical systems arising from the iteration of polynomial maps in the complex plane. In addition there are foundational results concerning Teichmuller theory, the geometry of Fuchsian and Kleinian groups, domain convergence properties for the Poincare metric, elaboration of the theory of the universal solenoid, the geometry of dynamical systems acting on a circle, and realization of Thompson's group as a mapping class group for a uniformly asymptotically affine circle endomorphism. The portion of the volume dealing with complex dynamics will appeal to a diverse group of mathematicians. Recently many researchers working in a wide range of topics, including topology, algebraic geometry, complex analysis, and dynamical systems, have become involved in aspects of this field.

The Invariant Theory of Matrices by Corrado De Concini,Claudio Procesi Pdf

This book gives a unified, complete, and self-contained exposition of the main algebraic theorems of invariant theory for matrices in a characteristic free approach. More precisely, it contains the description of polynomial functions in several variables on the set of matrices with coefficients in an infinite field or even the ring of integers, invariant under simultaneous conjugation. Following Hermann Weyl's classical approach, the ring of invariants is described by formulating and proving (1) the first fundamental theorem that describes a set of generators in the ring of invariants, and (2) the second fundamental theorem that describes relations between these generators. The authors study both the case of matrices over a field of characteristic 0 and the case of matrices over a field of positive characteristic. While the case of characteristic 0 can be treated following a classical approach, the case of positive characteristic (developed by Donkin and Zubkov) is much harder. A presentation of this case requires the development of a collection of tools. These tools and their application to the study of invariants are exlained in an elementary, self-contained way in the book.

An Introduction To Chaotic Dynamical Systems by Robert Devaney Pdf

The study of nonlinear dynamical systems has exploded in the past 25 years, and Robert L. Devaney has made these advanced research developments accessible to undergraduate and graduate mathematics students as well as researchers in other disciplines with the introduction of this widely praised book. In this second edition of his best-selling text, Devaney includes new material on the orbit diagram fro maps of the interval and the Mandelbrot set, as well as striking color photos illustrating both Julia and Mandelbrot sets. This book assumes no prior acquaintance with advanced mathematical topics such as measure theory, topology, and differential geometry. Assuming only a knowledge of calculus, Devaney introduces many of the basic concepts of modern dynamical systems theory and leads the reader to the point of current research in several areas.

Heads or Tails by Emmanuel Lesigne Pdf

Everyone knows some of the basics of probability, perhaps enough to play cards. Beyond the introductory ideas, there are many wonderful results that are unfamiliar to the layman, but which are well within our grasp to understand and appreciate. Some of the most remarkable results in probability are those that are related to limit theorems--statements about what happens when the trial is repeated many times. The most famous of these is the Law of Large Numbers, which mathematicians, engineers, economists, and many others use every day. In this book, Lesigne has made these limit theorems accessible by stating everything in terms of a game of tossing of a coin: heads or tails. In this way, the analysis becomes much clearer, helping establish the reader's intuition aboutprobability. Moreover, very little generality is lost, as many situations can be modelled from combinations of coin tosses. This book is suitable for anyone who would like to learn more about mathematical probability and has had a one-year undergraduate course in analysis.

Nonstandard Finite Difference Schemes: Methodology And Applications by Ronald E Mickens Pdf

This second edition of Nonstandard Finite Difference Models of Differential Equations provides an update on the progress made in both the theory and application of the NSFD methodology during the past two and a half decades. In addition to discussing details related to the determination of the denominator functions and the nonlocal discrete representations of functions of dependent variables, we include many examples illustrating just how this should be done.Of real value to the reader is the inclusion of a chapter listing many exact difference schemes, and a chapter giving NSFD schemes from the research literature. The book emphasizes the critical roles played by the 'principle of dynamic consistency' and the use of sub-equations for the construction of valid NSFD discretizations of differential equations.

Complex Dynamical Systems: The Mathematics Behind the Mandelbrot and Julia Sets by Robert L. Devaney,Bodil Branner Pdf

The Mandelbrot set has emerged as one of the most recognizable objects in mathematics. While there is no question of its beauty, relatively few people appreciate the fact that the mathematics behind such images is equally beautiful. This book presents lectures delivered during the AMS Short Course entitled Complex Dynamical Systems: The Mathematics Behind the Mandelbrot and Julia Sets, held at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Cincinnati in January 1994. The lectures cover a wide range of topics, including the classical work of Julia and Fatou on local dynamics of analytic maps as well as recent work on the dynamics of quadratic and cubic polynomials, the geometry of Julia sets, and the structure of various parameter spaces. Among the other topics are recent results on Yoccoz puzzles and tableaux, limiting dynamics near parabolic points, the spider algorithm, extensions of the theory to rational maps, Newton's method, and entire transcendental functions. Much of the book is accessible to anyone with a background in the basics of dynamical systems and complex analysis.

Differential Equations: From Calculus to Dynamical Systems: Second Edition by Virginia W. Noonburg Pdf

A thoroughly modern textbook for the sophomore-level differential equations course. The examples and exercises emphasize modeling not only in engineering and physics but also in applied mathematics and biology. There is an early introduction to numerical methods and, throughout, a strong emphasis on the qualitative viewpoint of dynamical systems. Bifurcations and analysis of parameter variation is a persistent theme. Presuming previous exposure to only two semesters of calculus, necessary linear algebra is developed as needed. The exposition is very clear and inviting. The book would serve well for use in a flipped-classroom pedagogical approach or for self-study for an advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student. This second edition of Noonburg's best-selling textbook includes two new chapters on partial differential equations, making the book usable for a two-semester sequence in differential equations. It includes exercises, examples, and extensive student projects taken from the current mathematical and scientific literature.

The Mathematics of Voting and Elections: A Hands-On Approach by Jonathan K. Hodge,Richard E. Klima Pdf

The Mathematics of Voting and Elections: A Hands-On Approach, Second Edition, is an inquiry-based approach to the mathematics of politics and social choice. The aim of the book is to give readers who might not normally choose to engage with mathematics recreationally the chance to discover some interesting mathematical ideas from within a familiar context, and to see the applicability of mathematics to real-world situations. Through this process, readers should improve their critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as broaden their views of what mathematics really is and how it can be used in unexpected ways. The book was written specifically for non-mathematical audiences and requires virtually no mathematical prerequisites beyond basic arithmetic. At the same time, the questions included are designed to challenge both mathematical and non-mathematical audiences alike. More than giving the right answers, this book asks the right questions. The book is fun to read, with examples that are not just thought-provoking, but also entertaining. It is written in a style that is casual without being condescending. But the discovery-based approach of the book also forces readers to play an active role in their learning, which should lead to a sense of ownership of the main ideas in the book. And while the book provides answers to some of the important questions in the field of mathematical voting theory, it also leads readers to discover new questions and ways to approach them. In addition to making small improvements in all the chapters, this second edition contains several new chapters. Of particular interest might be Chapter 12 which covers a host of topics related to gerrymandering.

Cohomological and Geometric Approaches to Rationality Problems by Fedor Bogomolov,Yuri Tschinkel Pdf

Rationality problems link algebra to geometry, and the difficulties involved depend on the transcendence degree of $K$ over $k$, or geometrically, on the dimension of the variety. A major success in 19th century algebraic geometry was a complete solution of the rationality problem in dimensions one and two over algebraically closed ground fields of characteristic zero. Such advances has led to many interdisciplinary applications to algebraic geometry. This comprehensive book consists of surveys of research papers by leading specialists in the field and gives indications for future research in rationality problems. Topics discussed include the rationality of quotient spaces, cohomological invariants of quasi-simple Lie type groups, rationality of the moduli space of curves, and rational points on algebraic varieties. This volume is intended for researchers, mathematicians, and graduate students interested in algebraic geometry, and specifically in rationality problems. Contributors: F. Bogomolov; T. Petrov; Y. Tschinkel; Ch. Böhning; G. Catanese; I. Cheltsov; J. Park; N. Hoffmann; S. J. Hu; M. C. Kang; L. Katzarkov; Y. Prokhorov; A. Pukhlikov
