Capacity Building for the Planning, Assessment and Systematic Observations of Forests by Karan Deo Singh Pdf

This book is intended to support the forestry institutions in the tropical countries in the planning, assessment and systematic observation of forests required to fulfill their obligations as laid in international conventions such as the CBD and UNFCCC. Following the Rio Conference, a number of countries, donors and international organizations have implemented capacity-building projects with varying degrees of success. One main reason for the varying success rates seems to lie in the design of technical assistance programs, which have been formulated on the traditional lines of mainly generating forest resources information or transferring technology; whereas Agenda 21 requires fundamental changes in countries’ institutions and approaches to planning and implementing the conservation and sustainable development of forests through a process of continuing research and analysis. The book is intended to serve the basic needs of national planning strategies and international and donor support.

Our Forest, Your Ecosystem, Their Timber by Nicholas K. Menzies Pdf

Community-based forest management (CBFM) is a model of forest management in which a community takes part in decision making and implementation, and monitoring of activities affecting the natural resources around them. CBFM provides a framework for a community members to secure access to the products and services that flow from the landscape in which they live and has become an essential component of any comprehensive approach to forest management. In this volume, Nicholas K. Menzies looks at communities in China, Zanzibar, Brazil, and India where, despite differences in landscape, climate, politics, and culture, common challenges and themes arise in making a transition from forest management by government agencies to CBFM. The stories of these four distinct places highlight the difficulties communities face when trying to manage their forests and negotiate partnerships with others interested in forest management, such as the commercial forest sector or conservation and environmental organizations. These issues are then considered against a growing body of research concerning what constitutes successful CBFM. Drawing on published and unpublished case studies, project reports, and his own rich experience, Menzies analyzes how CBFM fits into the broader picture of the management of natural resources, highlighting the conditions that bring about effective practices and the most just and equitable stewardship of resources. A critical companion for students, researchers, and practitioners, Our Forest, Your Ecosystem, Their Timber provides a singular resource on the emergence and evolution of CBFM.

Management of Forestry Research in India by V. K. Bahuguna Pdf

The forest and environment of India are under pressure from the rising population, leading into over exploitation, massive deforestation and other natural calamities on account of ecological imbalances, threatening the life support system of the people. Realizing that the future of the country is linked with rational use of the resources and conservation of the forest; the task of improving productivity of the forest and their protection and extension on the degraded areas have acquired national priority in India today. To boost the efficient management of the forest and to develop new technologies required to meet the challenge, Government of India, in 1997, had re-organized the research set up in the country, by establishing Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) and opening a network of research institutes under it; making the ICFRE, responsible for the forestry research planning, monitoring funding and co-ordination at the national level. This book focuses chiefly on two issues, firstly, need for developing system oriented planning framework for better resource allocation, control and monitoring research in India has been proposed, and issues of research programme, international co-operation, and personal requirements. Secondly, application of economic principles in deriving interest criteria for forestry research and evaluating the impact of research in terms of cost-benefit analysis are discussed with reference to the recent techniques developed. This project work starts from a brief history of forestry set up to give a better understanding of the situation.

Forest Management by C.K. Sreedharan Pdf

“A sustainable forest ecosystem must be our aim of forest management, one in which all flora and fauna, including human beings, can live in perfect and balanced harmony with the whole of nature.” In today’s fast-changing world, forest management needs to gear up to respond to the present-day needs with the priority of modern scientific management over conventional classic management, participatory management over forest enforcement, conservation forestry over production forestry, private tree enterprise and liberalization over government control, and professional management over general management in Tamil Nadu, India. Forest Management herein has introduced the best principle of sustainably managing the forest by strictly avoiding all ecologically harmful interventions, and instead, facilitate the natural course of action along with protection in Tamil Nadu. Tree growing and use in private lands need to be brought outside the purview of Tamil Nadu Forest Act 1882 for it to become a massive enterprise. A massive brown revolution based on trees is a definite possibility in this country, on the lines of green and white revolution, provided tree management is taken outside the clutches of government control.
