Canticles of an Aging Creole by Blake Ashburner Pdf

Nearly fifty-nine-years-old, Henry Arbuthnot deeply mourns the death of his French Creole mother, Mathilde. On Good Friday, Henry manages to shower and ready himself for work, even though his mothers overbearing voice haunts him all the while. With his daily cup of coffee for Clancy, he boards and greets the streetcar driver, his old friend and son of the familys maid. Struggling with grief, guilt, and bitterness, Henry rides the streetcar down the streets of New Orleans and the avenues of his life. He seeks a retrospective on his familys life and questions his relatives and acquaintances for their recollections. Through this reflection he hopes to understand his mothers stubborn obstruction of his desire to join the priesthood. His mother bludgeons, connives, and steals his faitheven taking a train to Georgetown University to admonish the priest and guidance counselor to keep the church away from her son. All Mathilde wants is for Henry to be a normal boy who plays sports and has girlfriends from proper society. But as his Aunt Eugenie says, Henry is special. In the end, Henry must try to both salvage his faith and make peace with his mothers ghost.

D. H. Lawrence: Late Essays and Articles by D. H. Lawrence Pdf

In his last years D. H. Lawrence often wrote for newspapers; he needed the money, and clearly enjoyed the work. He also wrote several substantial essays during the same period. This meticulously-edited collection brings together major essays such as Pornography and Obscenity and Lawrence's spirited Introduction to the volume of his Paintings; a group of autobiographical pieces, two of which are published here for the first time; and the articles Lawrence wrote at the invitation of newspaper and magazine editors. There are thirty-nine items in total, thirty-five of them deriving from original manuscripts; all were written between 1926 and Lawrence's death in March 1930. They are ordered chronologically according to the date of composition; each is preceded by an account of the circumstances in which it came to be published. The volume is introduced by a substantial survey of Lawrence's career as a writer responding directly to public interests and concerns.

The Complete Poems of John Donne by Robin Robbins Pdf

The Poems of John Donne is one volume paperback edition of the poems of John Donne (1572-1631) based on a comprehensive re-evaluation of his work from composition to circulation and reception. Donne’s output is tremendously varied in style and form and demonstrates his ability to exercise his rhetorical capabilities according to context and occasion. This edition aims to present the text of all his known poems, from the epigrams, songs and satires written for fellow young men about town, to the more mature verse-epistles and memorial elegies written for his patrons. The Longman Annotated English Poets series traditionally aims to present poems in chronological order; in this edition, however, the principle has been observed only within generic sections. This organisation reproduces the manner in which Donne’s original readers first encountered the poems in the various manuscripts of his elegies and satires that circulated in Donne’s lifetime. Volume One contains the Epigrams, Verse Letters to Friends, Love Lyrics, Love Elegies and Satires; Volume Two contains the religious poems, Wedding Celebrations, Verse Epistles to Patronesses, Commemorations, and the Anniversaries. The lyrics have been arranged alphabetically for ease of reference and because, in all but a few cases, precise date of composition is impossible to determine. Each poem has extensive editorial commentary designed to put the twenty-first century reader in possession of all that is necessary fully to appreciate Donne’s work. A substantial headnote sets each poem in its historical and literary context, while the annotations give detailed guidance on the wealth of classical and religious allusions and give full representation to the literary, historical and philosophical culture out of which the poems grew. In keeping with the traditions of the series, Donne’s own text has been modernised in punctuation and spelling except where to do so would alter or disrupt a rhyme.

Mysteriorum Libri Quinque by John Dee Pdf

A central text of occult literature, now in a deluxe Weiser Ankh hardcover edition with new ancillary material (a new introduction, corrections to the text, appendices, and other enhancements) by renowned scholar Joseph Peterson. Three-piece quarter binding with black cloth spine and blue cloth over heavy boards Gold and black foil stamping on case with blind frame, front and back; gold stamping on spine Headbands, ribbon marker, and marbled endpapers. Printed on quality, archival (acid-free), 55# natural-colored paper, with sewn signatures and reinforced spine “This book is not just a fancier version of the older edition. Anyone interested in Renaissance magic or Enochian magic will want this on their shelf.” —Jason Miller, author of Consorting with Spirits and other books and courses Mysteriorum Libri Quinque—the Five Books of Mysteries—written by John Dee in the 16th century, remains to this day one of the most important core texts of occult literature and a comprehensive guide to Enochian magic, encompassing language, symbolism, rituals, and practical techniques. This deluxe Weiser Ankh edition is a compilation of John Dee’s secret spiritual treatises and was prepared from the original manuscript (preserved in the British Library) in Dee’s own handwriting. These secret writings were discovered long after John Dee’s death (c. 1609); they had been tucked away in a hidden compartment of an old wooden chest and were remarkably spared from destruction—uncovered only a few years before the Great Fire of London in 1666. In these five secret treatises, John Dee, one of the most renowned scholars of the Elizabethan era, records in minute detail his research into the occult. Throughout his life, Dee had kept concealed his writings on the nature of humankind’s contact with angelic realms and languages. In this comprehensive work, Joseph Peterson presents a brief biography of John Dee, detailing his work in astronomy, mathematics, navigation, the arts, astrology, and the occult sciences, and calling him a “true Renaissance man.” Although this present work is concerned primarily with Dee's occult experiments, through it, we catch many glimpses of Elizabethan life and politics. Mysteriorum Libri Quinque presents Dee’s main achievement: five books, revealed and transcribed between 1581 and 1583, detailing his system for communicating with the angels and bringing to light mysteries and truths that scholars and adepts have been struggling to understand and use ever since. While Dee’s influence was certainly felt in his lifetime, his popularity has grown tremendously since. His Enochian system was used and adapted by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and subsequently by Aleister Crowley. First published by Weiser Books in 2003 as John Dee’s Five Books of Mystery: Original Sourcebook of Enochian Magic, this new deluxe Weiser Ankh edition has been extensively updated and expanded. It includes new commentary that reflects twenty years of research by editor Joseph Peterson, corrections to the text based on a review of high-resolution scans of the original manuscripts only recently made available by the British Library, new appendices reflecting more recent scholarship, and translations of the many Latin passages and extensive footnotes, making this work more accessible to readers.

The author has assembled a collection of 3,676 last words from a select group of individuals as they faced their approaching demise. This compilation illuminates a group of beings ranging from convicted criminals to the most holy. Some serenely committed their souls to a higher being while others railed against oncoming death. Many are famous, some are notorious, and others blur into a less well-defined subgroup. The majority of entries consist of final spoken words, but a few wills, epitaphs, diaries, and last letters are also included in this collection. A brief sketch of each person includes birth and death dates, country of origin, and a short biographical sketch. Farewells spoken after the turn of the twenty-first century ensure that this compilation has some of the most up-to-date material in this genre.
