Determining what is and what is not Mormon doctrine is a difficult endeavor. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints embraces four books of scripture as its canon, but also believes the church is led by a living prophet. Additions to the canon have been rare since the death of church founder Joseph Smith. Joseph Fielding Smith, tenth church president, said that if the prophet ever contradicts canon, canon prevails. On the other hand, Ezra Taft Benson, the church's thirteenth president, said that the living prophet's words are more important than cannon. In the first half of the nineteenth century, a diverse contingent of American religious figures promoted the idea of an open canon of divine revelation. Transcendentalists, Hicksite Quakers, Mormons and Shakers defined their faith against a culture that they accused of relegating religion's defining revelations to the ancient past. In this they were joined by some of the most notable characters of their generation, ranging from the provocative African-American prophetess Sojourner Truth to the influential theologian Horace Bushnell. Powerfully wielding this heterodox doctrine, these revelationists left a lasting imprint on the United States' religious culture. This dissertation explores the reasons why the first half of the nineteenth century proved so conducive to the notion of an open canon. Focusing on ideas -- rather than on social or psychological explanations -- it argues that a confluence of conceptual trends gave the tenet of continuing revelation special currency in the antebellum era. It proposes the existence of a "revelatory equation," which reasons that a cultural commitment to the necessity of divine revelation (A), when combined with a sense that the textual source of such revelation is historically distant (B), could both generate and justify appeals to continuing revelations (C). A + B = C. This dissertation argues that antebellum Americans occupied a culture in which -- in response to both deistical attacks on Christianity and historically minded treatments of the Bible -- the A and the B variables of the revelatory equation had never been more pronounced. They subsequently sustained an unusual amount of C. In short, antebellum Americans were living in the sum of a grand cultural equation. The simplicity of this formulation, however, belies the intricate combination of factors in which that cultural logic was embedded. The sequential progression of this society's revelatory reasoning weaved through such phenomena as the rise of common-sense epistemologies, conceptions of natural law, the cult of domesticity, and, of course, the Second Great Awakening. Pope John XXIII called the Second Vatican Council so that the Church's doctrine might be "more widely known, more deeply understood, and more penetrating in its effects." However, since the close of the Council in 1965, the results are wanting. Rather than announcing the gospel boldly in the present age, the Church has been seemingly reduced to silence. How did she lose her voice? How did the structures of proclamation, intended to hand on the Catholic faith, devolve and even contribute to vaporizing a Catholic culture? Because He Has Spoken to Us traces such developments from fixed points drawn from the fluid theology of Karl Rahner to their postmodern condition--successive steps that usher in the crisis by subduing, dismissing, and silencing the tradition. This postconciliar anthropocentric structure can now be better understood, critiqued, and displaced by a Ratzingerian approach. Rather than embracing a "given" demanded by contemporary context, Ratzinger proposes the revelation of the Logos in Jesus Christ as the "given," the true object of Christian faith. His alternate proposal requires the courage to face the full scope of the Christian structure, accessed through the Church's tradition, and a willingness to proclaim the gospel personally and with humble confidence.
Bible readers are often preoccupied with themselves. At times they neglect the original, ancient context of the biblical writings. The novelty of the modern is leveraged to trump the ancient. Mormon hermeneutics seems to say more about the modern LDS church than any ancient biblical meaning. Positively, the LDS is to be applauded for their emphasis on the living out of their faith. However, through various approaches to the Bible, the LDS Church seems to neglect the ancient horizon of the biblical text. Any interpretation of the Bible, LDS or otherwise, should be held accountable. This book is an attempt to categorize Mormon hermeneutics and utilizes numerous hermeneutical voices from the field of philosophical hermeneutics.
