Contributions to Nonlinear Functional Analysis by Eduardo H. Zarantonello Pdf

Contributions to Nonlinear Functional Analysis contains the proceedings of a Symposium on Nonlinear Functional Analysis, held in Madison, Wisconsin, on April 12-14, 1971, under the sponsorship of the University of Wisconsin's Mathematics Research Center. The symposium provided a forum for discussing various topics related to nonlinear functional analysis, from transversality in nonlinear eigenvalue problems to monotonicity methods in Hilbert spaces and some applications to nonlinear partial differential equations. Comprised of 15 chapters, this book begins by presenting an extension of Leray-Schauder degree and an application to a nonlinear elliptic boundary value problem. The discussion then turns to the use of degree theory to prove the existence of global continua of solutions of nonlinear eigenvalue problems; transversality in nonlinear eigenvalue problems; and how variational structure can be used to study some local questions in bifurcation theory. Subsequent chapters deal with the notion of monotone operators and monotonicity theory; a nonlinear version of the Hille-Yosida theorem; a version of the penalty method for the Navier-Stokes equations; and various types of weak solutions for minimizing problems in the spirit of duality theory for convex functionals. This monograph will be of interest to students and practitioners in the field of mathematics who want to learn more about nonlinear functional analysis.

Trends in Nonlinear Analysis by Markus Kirkilionis,Susanne Krömker,Rolf Rannacher,Friedrich Tomi Pdf

Applied mathematics is a central connecting link between scientific observations and their theoretical interpretation. Nonlinear analysis has surely contributed major developments which nowadays shape the face of applied mathematics. At the beginning of the millennium, all sciences are expanding at increased speed. Technological, ecological, economical and medical problem solving is a central issue of every modern society. Mathematical models help to expose fundamental structures hidden in these problems and serve as unifying tools to deepen our understanding. What are the new challenges applied mathematics has to face with the increased diversity of scientific problems? In which direction should the classical tools of nonlinear analysis be developed further? How do new available technologies influence the development of the field? How can problems be solved which have been beyond reach in former times? It is the aim of this book to explore new developments in the field by way of discussion of selected topics from nonlinear analysis.

Nonlinear Analysis by Erich H. Rothe Pdf

Nonlinear Analysis: A Collection of Papers in Honor of Erich H. Rothe is a collection of papers in honor of Erich H. Rothe, a mathematician who has made significant contributions to various aspects of nonlinear functional analysis. Topics covered range from periodic solutions of semilinear parabolic equations to nonlinear problems across a point of resonance for non-self-adjoint systems. Nonlinear boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations are also considered. Comprised of 14 chapters, this volume first discusses the use of fixed-point theorems in ordered Banach spaces to prove existence and multiplicity result for periodic solutions of semilinear parabolic differential equations of the second order. The reader is then introduced to linear maximal monotone operators and singular nonlinear integral equations of Hammerstein type. Subsequent chapters focus on the branching of periodic solutions of non-autonomous systems; restricted generic bifurcation; Tikhonov regularization and nonlinear problems at resonance; and minimax theorems and their applications to nonlinear partial differential equations. This monograph will be of interest to students and practitioners in the field of mathematics.

Nonlinear Analysis of Structures (1997) by Muthukrishnan Sathyamoorthy Pdf

Nonlinear Analysis of Structures presents a complete evaluation of the nonlinear static and dynamic behavior of beams, rods, plates, trusses, frames, mechanisms, stiffened structures, sandwich plates, and shells. These elements are important components in a wide variety of structures and vehicles such as spacecraft and missiles, underwater vessels and structures, and modern housing. Today's engineers and designers must understand these elements and their behavior when they are subjected to various types of loads. Coverage includes the various types of nonlinearities, stress-strain relations and the development of nonlinear governing equations derived from nonlinear elastic theory. This complete guide includes both mathematical treatment and real-world applications, with a wealth of problems and examples to support the text. Special topics include a useful and informative chapter on nonlinear analysis of composite structures, and another on recent developments in symbolic computation. Designed for both self-study and classroom instruction, Nonlinear Analysis of Structures is also an authoritative reference for practicing engineers and scientists. One of the world's leaders in the study of nonlinear structural analysis, Professor Sathyamoorthy has made significant research contributions to the field of nonlinear mechanics for twenty-seven years. His foremost contribution to date has been the development of a unique transverse shear deformation theory for plates undergoing large amplitude vibrations and the examination of multiple mode solutions for plates. In addition to his notable research, Professor Sathyamoorthy has also developed and taught courses in the field at universities in India, Canada, and the United States.

This volume of contributions pays tribute to the life and work of Djairo Guedes de Figueiredo on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The articles it contains were born out of the ICMC Summer Meeting on Differential Equations – 2014 Chapter, also dedicated to de Figueiredo and held at the Universidade de São Paulo at São Carlos, Brazil from February 3-7, 2014. The contributing authors represent a group of international experts in the field and discuss recent trends and new directions in nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations and systems. Djairo Guedes de Figueiredo has had a very active scientific career, publishing 29 monographs and over one hundred research articles. His influence on Brazilian mathematics has made him one of the pillars of the subject in that country. He had a major impact on the development of analysis, especially in its application to nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations and systems throughout the entire world. The articles collected here pay tribute to him and his legacy and are intended for graduate students and researchers in mathematics and related areas who are interested in nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations and systems.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the authors' pioneering contributions to nonlinear set-valued analysis by topological methods. The coverage includes fixed point theory, degree theory, the KKM principle, variational inequality theory, the Nash equilibrium point in mathematical economics, the Pareto optimum in optimization, and applications to best approximation theory, partial equations and boundary value problems.Self-contained and unified in presentation, the book considers the existence of equilibrium points of abstract economics in topological vector spaces from the viewpoint of Ky Fan minimax inequalities. It also provides the latest developments in KKM theory and degree theory for nonlinear set-valued mappings.

The chapters in this volume deal with four fields with deep historical roots that remain active areas reasearch: partial differential equations, variational methods, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics. The collection is intended to serve two purposes: First, to honor James Serrin, in whose work the four fields frequently interacted; and second, to bring together work in fields that are usually pursued independently but that remain remarkably interrelated. Serrin's contributions to mathematical analysis and its applications are fundamental and include such theorems and methods as the Gilbarg- Serrin theorem on isoated singularities, the Serrin symmetry theorem, the Alexandrov-Serrin moving-plane technique, The Peletier-Serrin uniqueness theorem, and the Serrin integal of the calculus of variations. Serrin has also been noted for the elegance of his mathematical work and for the effectiveness of his teaching and collaborations.
