Climatic factors, feedlot runoff, and organic material in the runoff were evaluated in experimental and commercial feedlots. The effects of slope, stocking rates, terraces, basins, and holding ponds were evaluated to obtain best controls for containing runoff. The organic manure-soil interface severely restricts the movement of water, nitrates, organic substances, and air into the soil beneath feedlots. Management practices, such as good drainage, that enhance aeration will decrease the evolution of volatile compounds.

Cattle Feedlots and the Environment by Anonim Pdf
Pollution from cattle feedlots is a serious problem in certain areas of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. However, feedlots can be built and operated in a manner which will eliminate the majority of the pollution problems. These guidelines have been prepared to assist in bringing cattle feedlot operations into harmony with the environment. The guidelines are a general statement of location, design, and operation recommendations for individual feedlot operators,--Letter of Transmittal.

Pollution Implications of Animal Wastes -- by Raymond C. Loehr Pdf
The purpose of the review is to present a forward oriented state-of-the-art view of pollution implications which must be faced with the ever increasing trend toward confinement feeding large numbers of livestock. The manure wastes from all varieties of livestock under feed in the United States are characterized and related both to human population equivalents and beef cattle equivalents. The potential environmental hazards which may result from improper handling, storage, and disposal of these wastes were discussed. The effectiveness and economics of various conventional wastes treatment and disposal methods as related to confinement feeding wastes were evaluated.

Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations by Anu Mittal Pdf
Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) are large livestock and poultry operations that raise animals in a confined situation. CAFOs can improve the efficiency of animal production but large amounts of manure can degrade air and water quality. The EPA is responsible for regulating CAFOs and requires CAFOs that discharge certain pollutants to obtain a permit. This report discusses: (1) trends in CAFOs over the past 30 years; (2) amounts of waste they generate; (3) findings of key research on CAFOs¿ health and environmental impacts; (4) EPA¿s progress in developing CAFO air emissions protocols; and (5) effect of recent court decisions on EPA¿s regulation of CAFO water pollutants. Includes recommendations. Illustrations.
