Controversies and Innovations in Urological Surgery by J. Clive Gingell,Paul H. Abrams Pdf

The title of this book is a challenge. Anyone with the least knowledge of present day urology will know that there are many very controversial aspects of this subject. Urology is not alone in this unsettled environment for there are similar debates in almost all other aspects of surgery. In addition to the rapid changes in technology, an important part of the explanation for these controversies is simply that more surgeons are prepared to admit that no area of their work is so established that it does not bear further scrutiny and assessment. Argument can be tedious but debate is healthy. This book aims to present material that is debatable: experienced practitioners of each topic explain why an opinion or preference can be sustained. The purist might wish to have these opinions resolved by a well-planned clinical trial, but experience of clinical trials shows that they do not always produce results that are easily translated into a positive change in clinical practice. Would the reader be persuaded more by a statistically significant difference or by an experienced clinician who has reached certain conclusions? Both are risky, but since surgical techniques are often not easily converted into appropriate studies or trials the Editors have obtained the best opinion on each controversy and innovation. The media adore controversy for its own sake. The medical profession accepts controversy but knows that few events in medicine are absolute and few procedures can be done only by one method.

50 Studies Every Urologist Should Know by Philipp Dahm Pdf

50 Studies Every Urologist Should Know presents key studies that have shaped the practice of urology. Selected using a rigorous methodology, the studies cover topics including reflux disease in paediatric urology, management of male erectile dysfunction and lower urinary tract symptoms, female urology and stone disease, the various forms of genitourinary cancer, and more. For each study, a concise summary is presented with an emphasis on the results and limitations of the study, and its implications for practice. An illustrative clinical case concludes each review, followed by brief information on other relevant studies. This book is a must-read for healthcare professionals in urology, as well as anyone who wants to learn more about the data behind clinical practice.

The History of Technologic Advancements in Urology by Sutchin R. Patel,Michael E. Moran,Stephen Y. Nakada Pdf

This text explores the history and development of the many technologies that have led to how we treat contemporary urologic problems. From the development of the cystoscope, the advances in laparoscopy, the birth of the field of endourology, to the era of robotics today, urologists have pushed the envelope in technologic innovation. The editors highlight the development of the cystoscope and the early tools used to treat ureteral stones, the development of ureteroscopy, and the applications of lasers and shock wave lithotripsy in the treatment of urolithiasis. Furthermore, they explore the history of minimally invasive treatments in urologic oncology from the story behind the first laparoscopic nephrectomy, the application of hand-assisted technology to the development of robotics and percutaneous treatment approaches (radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation). As the field of urology continues to evolve, urologists will continue to look to the future with the recent applications of histotripsy and regenerative medicine. This text chronicles the creativity, innovation and discovery of the developments of the instruments that allow to practice urology today, as well as glimpse what the future of urology holds.

Current Perspectives in Paediatric Urology by Robert H. Whitaker Pdf

The aim of this series is to bring the reader up-to-date data and opinions on the practice of urological surgery. The ten titles published since 1982 have all been concerned with adult urology, with reference to paediatric problems included in some relevant chapters. The addition of this title on paediatric urology is especially welcome because it brings together the important components of the sub-specialty. This book has developed from one of the first of the annual courses in urological sub-specialties provided for trainees in the UK as part of their higher surgical training. But that audience is not the only one at which this book is aimed. In his Preface, Robert Whitaker emphasises the changes over the past ten to fifteen years: this means that any urologist over the age of 45 is already out of date in much of his or her knowledge of paediatric urology - unless there has been a genuine attempt at continuing medical education. Attendance and discussions at meetings and reading of current literature are useful methods of updating our knowledge. However, this book provides a much-needed link with the paediatric urology course and is a splendid reference source for all urologists. Robert Whitaker has gathered together four eminent co-authors to present their material on the main issues in paediatric urology. In keeping with the aims of this series, the data are up to date, the perspectives are contemporary and in every way this is an excellent addition to Clinical Practice in Urology.

Functional Reconstruction of the Urinary Tract and Gynaeco-Urology by Richard Turner-Warwick,Christopher R. Chapple Pdf

This lavishly illustrated operative atlas consists of detailed, step-by-step descriptions of the procedures used in reconstruction of the female urinary tract from the kidney to the urethra. It is based on the extensive operative experience of two very experienced reconstructive urologists. The procedures described have been devised compeletely afresh or considerably developed during the course of many thousands of operations and thus represent a unique collection. Many of the procedures and "tips" have not been published before. The approach taken throughout the book is a functional one. The basic principles underlying reconstrucive urology are outlined and emphasis is placed on the fact that the logic of each procedure is dictated by a thorough understanding of the particular functional abnormality involved. In addition there is a wealth of practical tips, observations and clinical pearls built up over many years of surgical experience which help to reduce complications and make operations easier. Each operative procedure is described by a sequence of colour photographs with running captions explaining the pitfalls and points of particular importance at each stage. It will be an indispensible guide to reconstructive urology for urologists and gynaecologists alike.
