Conversations about Divine Mystery by Stephen Burns,HyeRan Kim-Cragg Pdf

For decades, Gail Ramshaw has lent her liturgical and theological creativity to the church's life in worship. Her past-presidency of the North American Academy of Liturgy is a signal of her gravitas in the academy, not to mention the more than two dozen books she has produced. For the churches--and not only her own Evangelical Lutheran Church in America--she has, internationally and ecumenically, and in part through active involvement in the World Council of Churches (WCC), had her work included in the ritual books of many traditions around the world. Here, in a fitting recognition of a life of scholarship and reflection, is an esteemed collection of writing by liturgical and homiletical scholars honoring and engaging with Gail Ramshaw's work and extending it further to new questions, contexts, and concerns. The volume is organized around the key themes of Ramshaw's work: lectionary patterns, prayer forms, and theological horizons.

Disturbing Divine Behavior by Eric A. Seibert Pdf

How should we understand biblical texts where God is depicted as acting irrationally, violently, or destructively? If we distance ourselves from disturbing portrayals of God, how should we understand the authority of Scripture? How does the often wrathful God portrayed in the Old Testament relate to the God of love proclaimed in the New Testament? Is that contrast even accurate? Disturbing Divine Behavior addresses these perennially vexing questions for the student of the Bible. Eric A. Seibert calls for an engaged and discerning reading of the Old Testament that distinguishes the particular literary and theological goals achieved through narrative characterizations of God from the rich understanding of the divine to which the Old Testament as a whole points. Providing illuminating reflections on theological reading as well, this book will be a welcome resource for any readers who puzzle over disturbing representations of God in the Bible.

The Divine Mystery by Allen Upward Pdf

Mr. Allen Upward, better known to fame as a war correspondent, has attempted to give us "a reading of the history of Christianity down to the time of Christ," and however much we may disagree with some of his conclusions we must at least applaud the sincerity and the originality as well as the erudition of his effort. Mr. Upward finds in the dawn of Christianity a story that has been told mystically from age to age. Its words and signs are inherited from a primeval language, from prehistoric peoples, and from tales that are still the Bible of the peasant and the child. It is, he says, a recrystallization of universal fears and hopes, carried out in the crucible of a planetary heat wave, whose coming had been more or less distinctly felt by "a series of true prophets from Zoroaster to John the Baptist." Mr. Upward believes that Christ was an historical personage, but that the story of his life is an allegorical repetition of the greater story that is as old as the world it- self. To this end he collects all the threads of folklore within his reach, all the "superstitions" that perhaps are not superstitions, and that tend to show the stirrings of a higher consciousness and knowledge that culminates in the genius and the savior. If sometimes he seems to be inadequate or superficial we must remember the greatness, the almost incredible magnitude of the quarries from which he hews.

Conversation, Friendship and Transformation by Jennifer Constantine Jackson Pdf

Conversation is the central spiritual exercise in philosophical and theological reflection on language and love. Groundbreaking in its interdisciplinary approach, Conversation, Friendship and Transformation invites readers to an exploration of theological reflection on conversation and friendship as transformative ways of knowing self, others and God. Contemporary contributions in the areas of rhetorical theory, friendship studies, and gender collaboration provide a fruitful lens through which conversation as discourse may be understood as a pathway for theological inquiry. Augustine’s De doctrina christiana and Confessions manifest a foundational example of reflection on the nature of language and love in the context of basic questions of Christianity and culture. Two texts from the medieval tradition are brought forth to confirm and develop Augustine’s contributions. The Letters of Heloise and Abelard have received substantial scholarly attention from the work of medievalists, historians and literary critics, but require more intentional theological reflection about the relation between the truths of the Christian faith and the collaborative participation of men and women. Thomas Aquinas’ discussion of oratio in the Summa Theologiae is presented for the first time as a pivotal treatise in this profoundly influential text in the history of Western thought.

The Divine Mystery Revealed by R.J. Hawkins Pdf

Have you ever wondered who and what you really are? What is the source of your life in this world and what is your relationship to this source? Does your life have any larger meaning or purpose? Is your human, worldly experience just a part of a dream, you being the dreamer, and your real self existing as a spiritual entity as part of the great Creator/Energy we call God. If this were so, would your perspective on life and death change? John, the spiritual entity of Roger Hawkins, inspired by the Holy Spirit, offers a thought-provoking examination of human existence and our ultimate purpose on earth, interspersed with letters from the Holy Spirit to His beloved children. John as the observer of Rogers life experience provides many opportunities of spiritual growth as Roger battled through mental illness, anxiety, and his acceptance of his sexual orientation in his own life. John leads Roger on a spiritual journey through often dramatic and controversial life experiences, where he discovers the truth concerning his relationship to divinity, his life in the world, and his connection to everyone else. As a culmination of his spiritual evolution, John was guided by the Holy Spirit to write the Humanity Manifesto, which is a blueprint to create change and bring about a new world order reflective of our divine nature as people. In the reading of this book, you to will discover your dual nature as the Divine mysteries will be revealed to you and you will find the answers that you have been seeking.

A New Conversation by Robert Boak Slocum Pdf

In these twenty-nine essays, Episcopalians consider the tradition and the future of their church—its theology, its polity, its missiology. These “new conversations” come from ministers of every order (bishop, priest, deacon, laity) and from practiced hands at many ministries (education, theology, music, chaplaincy, and spiritual direction). Several essayists write urgently that the Episcopal Church must change if it is to survive. Others contend—with equal fervor—that American Anglicanism can work if Episcopalians will reclaim and reaffirm their liturgical, spiritual, and theological heritage. Between these views are other writers who suggest that points of supposed opposition might indeed coexist in the church of the future—taking vibrant, and perhaps paradoxical, new forms.
