Conversations from the Print Studio by Craig Zammiello,Elisabeth Hodermarsky Pdf

Over his thirty years as a master printer, Craig Zammiello has established himself as a foremost specialist of intaglio printmaking in the United States. Through lively discussions between Zammiello, Elisabeth Hodermarsky, and ten contemporary artists--Mel Bochner, Carroll Dunham, Ellen Gallagher, Jane Hammond, Suzanne McClelland, Chris Ofili, Elizabeth Peyton, Matthew Ritchie, Kiki Smith, and Terry Winters--Conversations from the Print Studio offers an intimate look at the relationship between printer and artist, as well as insight into the technical challenges of intaglio printmaking. The conversations follow ten unique projects from inception to completion, tracing each artist's initial vision, the artist's and printer's creative strategies, and reactions to the final product. By documenting the dual perspectives of artist and printer, the book reveals recent innovations in the field of printmaking as well as the collaborative nature of art-making itself. The result is a rare behind-the-scenes excursion into the workings of the contemporary print studio. Distributed for the Yale University Art Gallery

Conversations with Rudy Burckhardt about Everything by Rudy Burckhardt,Simon Pettet Pdf

Literary Nonfiction. Photography. CONVERSATIONS WITH RUDY BURCKHARDT comprises an extensive interview with poet Simon Pettet, including 22 photographs printed in duotone by the noted photographer, filmmaker and painter Rudy Burckhardt. The photographs, taken between 1938 and 1986, include his classic, much-admired image of the Flatiron Building, New York (1948) and photographs of rhapsodic beauty in Maine, gentle serenity in Naples and many humorous scenes (New York, Little Rock, Florence, Italy and others). His images are all completely accessible and reflect his resolutely unpretentious style. The sprightly dialogue complements the photographs, with many discussed individually. The publication of CONVERSATIONS WITH RUDY BURCKHARDT honored the occasion of three significant events that took place in 1987. After decades of relative obscurity, Rudy Burckhardt's devoted underground following was joined by many newfound admirers as a result of a major retrospective of 67 of his films at the Museum of Modern Art and, concurrently, an exhibition of photographs at Brooke Alexander Gallery and a show of paintings at Blue Mountain Gallery. As Phillip Lopate remarked, "In the book, one is privileged to hear the artist's thoughts and doubts about living, making art, beauty, time, youth, aging, public acclaim, compositional techniques, Switzerland, parents, and the non-relationship between rapture and sorrow...The combination of beautiful, rarely seen photographs and lively text make this an irresistible book."

Edward Burtynsky: Essential Elements by Edward Burtynsky,William A. Ewing Pdf

The comprehensive monograph of one of the world's most acclaimed contemporary art photographers featuring dozens of images never before published Edward Burtynsky (b. 1955) is one of a generation of photographers who seek to portray the visible outcomes of a globalized economy and humankind’s impact on environments around the world. He has achieved global recognition with his large-scale photographs and project-based monographs, such as Quarries, Oil, and Water, all of which have resulted in popular touring exhibitions and, in the case of Water, a feature-length documentary film entitled Watermark. However, while Burtynsky’s global standing is without question, no comprehensive retrospective of his career to date exists. Edited and curated by William A. Ewing, Edward Burtynsky: Essential Elements provides an overview of Burtynsky’s work across four decades, including 140 photographs of both iconic and previously unpublished images. It conceives of Burtynsky’s oeuvre as five free-flowing sections that provide a sense of both his visual language and his exploration of the dilemmas at the heart of our globalized world. Each of the five sections is interleaved with a selection of texts from previous publications and articles on Burtynsky that work in concert with the photographs to provide a complete understanding of Burtynsky’s view of the world. With an introduction by William A. Ewing and an essay by Joshua Schuster, this book provides both an entirely new way of seeing Burtynsky’s work. Includes a print: Silver Lake Operations #16, Lake Lefroy, Western Australia, 2007.

American Artists in Their New York Studios by Stephan Götz Pdf

"This book is a collection of interviews that reveals the diversity of techniques employed by important artists of the past two decades. Not only do the artists yield insights into the actual creative process, but some of the most immediate questions about the conservation of contemporary art also come to light." "Since there has been increasing concern about the preservation of contemporary art, the author contends that the use of many different materials 'poses a great challenge' to the conservator." "Forced to seek new interpretations, Stephan Gotz, a conservator himself, directly confronts twenty-six New York artists in their studios. In each interview Gotz transforms the artist into a specialist who offers us a very personal and subjective view of his/her art. Each artist presents a diversity of new and accepted techniques." "A prefatory note by Robert Lue establishes the context for each interview and a reproduction of a recent or important work by the artist is included."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Conversations at the Castle by Mary Jane Jacob,Michael Brenson Pdf

This book addresses one of the most troubling questions of contemporary art theory and practice: Who is contemporary art for? Although the divide between contemporary art and the public has long been acknowledged, this is the first time that artists, critics, and the public have come together to debate the problem and to make artmaking, criticism, and public reaction part of the same process. Like the exhibitions, discussions, and seminars held at "The Castle" during the summer 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, this book is based on the premise that contemporary artists and the general public have something to say to each other. By positing the space of "conversation" as one in which artworks can be experienced as creative sites open to multilayered interpretations by changing audiences, the book provides an antidote to the modernist connoisseurial silence that has long been used to define quality. The book is divided into three sections. The first contains essays by project curator Mary Jane Jacob, critic and coeditor Michael Brenson, and cultural critic Homi K. Bhabha. Their essays describe fresh approaches to contemporary art and its audiences at a time of increased access through technology and decreased government funding. The second section contains essays by the six artists/collaborative teams involved in the project. Their works, aimed at public participation, included installation-performances, collaborations with Atlanta communities, cross-country tours, and the creation and presentation of food as a means to stimulate conversation and construct community. The artists are: artway of thinking (Italy), Ery Camara (Senegal/Mexico), Mauricio Dias and Walter Riedweg (Brazil/Switzerland), Regina Frank (Germany), IRWIN (Slovenia), and Maurice O'Connell (Ireland). The final section contains seven essays by the critics, curators, educators, administrators, and artists who led the "Conversations on Culture" at The Castle. The essays are by Jacquelynn Baas, Michael Brenson, Lisa Graziose Corrin, Amina Dickerson and Tricia Ward, Steven Durland, Susan Krane, and Susan Vogel.

Beyond the Sixth Extinction by Shawn Sheehy Pdf

Elaborate pop-ups feature some wonderfully creepy creatures that just might dominate the ecosystem and be essential to our planet’s survival in an eerily realistic future world. Whether or not we know it, the sixth global extinction is already under way, propelled not by a meteor but by human activity on Earth. Take a long step forward into the year 4847 with the help of stunning pop-ups portraying eight fantastical creatures, along with spreads and flaps presenting details about each one. Paper engineer Shawn Sheehy envisions the aftermath of extinction as a flourishing ecosystem centered around fictional creatures that could evolve from existing organisms. Promising high appeal for science-fiction fans of all ages — and plenty of food for discussion — this evolutionary extravaganza offers a time line of the six extinction events in Earth’s history, a “field guide” to each creature, a diagram of species relationships, a habitat map of the (imagined) ruins of Chicago, and an illuminating author’s note.

Conversation techniques and tools that can help strong managers become great leaders Often the very same skills and traits that enable rising stars to achieve success "tenacity, aggressiveness, self-confidence" become liabilities when promoted into a leadership track. Leadership mindsets and skills can be developed, and Leadership Conversations provides practical guidance for connecting with others in ways that transform each interaction into an opportunity for organizational and personal growth. Identifies four types of conversation every leader must master: building relationships, making decisions, taking action, and developing others Provides an action plan for boosting your personal leadership potential, as well for developing leadership skills in others Draws on the authors' rich experience coaching and working with leaders at a wide range of organizations, including NASA, the U.S. Navy, intelligence agencies, Boeing, Gillette, Bausch & Lomb, and Georgetown University Leadership Conversations is required reading for both high-potential managers looking to make it to the next level and leaders looking to develop their people.
