Conversations with Joseph Flummerfelt by Joseph Flummerfelt,Donald Nally Pdf

In Conversations with Joseph Flummerfelt: Thoughts on Conducting, Music, and Musicians, Donald Nally presents a window into the mind and heart of one of America's most celebrated and distinguished choral conductors. This captivating narrative traces Flummerfelt's formative years and influences, his most important artistic collaborations, and his approach to conducting and music. There is also a philosophical discussion of cultural influences and obstacles in art, how one teaches conducting, and the foundations of ensemble music-making. This book explores the conductor's early career influences from musicians such as Robert Shaw and Nadia Boulanger and reveals his thoughts on composers Igor Stravinsky, Samuel Barber, Benjamin Britten, and Olivier Messiaen, among others. Topics range from his approaches to style, conducting gesture, sound generation, and choral sound to the psychology of music-making and the contemporary environment of art-making. Nally's interview style captures the energy and rhythm of Flummerfelt's speech so the conductor's voice and passion is readily evident. Through these intimate conversations, Flummerfelt reveals his life, art, and ideas-from close collaborations with some of the world's greatest orchestral conductors to his work as artistic director of Westminster Choir College. More than thirty photos present a visual record of Flummerfelt's collaborations with many of the great musicians of our time; a biographical timeline, list of collaborating orchestras and conductors, and discography are also included. America's Choral Ambassador by Joseph G. Beck Pdf

At the 2007 American Choral Directors Association Southwestern Convention, I presented an Interest Session lecture titled John Finley Williamsons influence on Americas choral singing. The session was well attended and the question-and-answer period was spirited. The participants were most interested in the recordings, photographs and articles that I presented, and wished there had been more. Subsequently, I began enlarge my lecture into a PowerPoint presentation that included newly found newspaper articles and historical photographs of many of the foreign concerts tours by the Westminster Choir. These various new items are included in the present edition, plus an article by Mrs. Williamson about the first European tour. I also have included some background information about my personal experiences with Dr. Williamson when I was a student at the Westminster Choir College and as a participant in his legendary summer school workshops. Preface All of art must come from the heart. This must be true because the quality that makes art endure is the spiritual value that must be in art. The art that comes most quickly from the heart and speaks most readily to the heart is the art of music in particular the art of solo and choral singing. J. F. Williamson, Lecture, Summer, 1959 The life and work of John Finley Williamson (1887 1964) is so complex and interesting that one volume could not possibly do him justice. He was the founder of the Westminster Choir and the college that bears its name, and was one of Americas choral pioneers in the early twentieth century. His charismatic teaching of choral and vocal techniques helped revive singing in Americas churches and schools at a time when it was in decline. I knew John Finley Williamson for a mere ten years from the time I was a teenager until his untimely death, when I was twenty-eight. During that time I think I was able to know him as well as any of his many students. 2014 marks fifty years since the passing of John Finley Williamson. This volume describes both pictorially and through his lectures his worldwide influence on the choral and vocal arts.

Christian Ethics in Conversation by Isaac B. Sharp,Christian T. Iosso Pdf

Inspired by Donald W. Shriver Jr.'s leadership of Union Theological Seminary (New York City), Christian Ethics in Conversation brings together essays by members of a stellar faculty--including Gary Dorrien, Larry Rasmussen, Phyllis Trible, and Cornel West--and interdisciplinary colleagues, such as Columbia University biologist Robert Pollack, Chancellor Emeritus of the Jewish Theological Seminary Ismar Schorsch, and Pulitzer Prize-winning Yale historian David W. Blight. The challenges they describe of embracing diversity while facing financial pressure and encouraging social change speak to seminaries, churches, denominations, and faithful individuals facing similar challenges today. The chapters model the kinds of interdisciplinary, interfaith, and inter-institutional conversations foundational to Shriver's approach to Christian public ethics. Shriver and Union Seminary addressed racial justice directly, and colleagues describe lessons learned from an activist-academic who was also a Southerner committed to reconciling and repairing the wounds of history. International conversation partners analyze the place of moral claims in successful social transformation, but those claims also had to be lived out in the seminary's institutional life. Gender justice, full inclusion, and liberation theologies became crucial to Union's identity, but not automatically. The changes required are described by a former dean, board member, worship leader, and several students. All the while, faculty and students of Union and its neighbors were engaged in ongoing debates about honest patriotism, friendship across division, and the dangers of uncritical nationalism, also captured by the book's contributors. Dmitri Shostakovich Catalogue by Derek C. Hulme Pdf

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-75) was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, as well as the first major Soviet composer. In the fourth edition of Dmitri Shostakovich Catalogue: The First Hundred Years and Beyond, Derek C. Hulme names and describes all known musical compositions of the Russian composer. More than 175 major works are annotated and discussed, including such comprehensive details as titles and subtitles, dates of composition, instrumentation, and duration; information on dedications and premieres; arrangements by the composer and others; publication details; notes on bibliographical references and the location of the autograph score; and comprehensive chronological lists of vinyl, compact disc, and visual recordings. The entries are presented chronologically and by opus number, while indexes of names and compositions provide full accessibility. Several appendixes supplement the volume, guiding readers to further information in published sources and providing information on the composer's film, radio, television, and theatre productions; his abandoned projects and obscure works; and his recordings, including box sets and special USSR recordings. An appendix also discusses the monogram DSCH, a musical motif based on his name that permeates his compositions. This new edition also includes a comprehensive chronological chart of Shostakovich's works and historical events and several plates of memorabilia.
