Cooperative Knowledge Processing by Stefan Kirn,Gregory O'Hare Pdf

In the light of the challenges that face today's organizations, there is a grow ing recognition that future market success and long term' survival of enter prises will increasingly depend upon the effective usage of information technology. Of late, a new generation of terminology has emerged to describe enterprises. This terminology draws heavily upon the virtual concep- virtual reality, virtual organization, virtual (working) environment, and indeed virtual product. However, developing computerized organisations for the 21st century demands serious thought with regard to the judicious integration of organizational theory, design and practice with research tools and methods from within information processing technology. Within this book, we approach this aim from the perspective of a radically decentralized (possibly virtual) enterprise. We assume that organizations are becoming increasingly process-orientated, rather than adhering to the former more traditional organizational structures based upon task oriented models. This approach has proved illuminating in that, due to the inherent autonomy of organizational subunits any approach to coordinating decentralized activ ities (including workflows and business processes) necessitates a cooperative style of problem solving. This book introduces the reader to a stimulating new field of interdiscipli nary research in cooperative problem solving. In Chapter 1 Kim presents a view of three central discip14tes, namely those of Organizational Theory, Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI). The applications given here demonstrate how future enterprises will benefit from recent advances in the technological arena of cooperative knowledge processing.

Convergence and Knowledge Processing in Multi-Agent Systems by Maria Chli,Philippe de Wilde Pdf

Agent systems are being used to model complex systems like societies, markets and biological systems. In this book we investigate issues of agent systems related to convergence and interactivity using techniques from agent based modelling to simulate complex systems, and demonstrate that interactivity/exchange and convergence in multi-agent systems are issues that are significantly interrelated. Topic and features: - Introduces the state of the art in multi-agent systems, with an emphasis on agent-based computational economics. - Sheds light on the fundamental concepts behind the stability of multi-agent systems. - Investigates knowledge exchange among agents, the rationale behind it and its effects on the ecosystem. - Explores how information provided through interaction with the system can be used to optimise its performance. - Describes a pricing strategy for a realistic large-scale distributed system. This book supplies a comprehensive resource and will be invaluable reading for researchers and postgraduates studying this topic.

Information Technology for Knowledge Management by Uwe M. Borghoff,Remo Pareschi Pdf

As we approach the beginning of the 21 st century, we are beginning to see the emer gence of knowledge management as a natural evolution of the focus and importance of quality in the 1980s and reengineering in the I 990s. Quality placed a huge em phasis on getting all employees to use their brainpower better. Reengineering em phasized the use of technology to streamline business processes and take out costs. With the lessons of quality and reengineering firmly embedded in our everyday op erations (continual cost containment and higher quality is a way of life), businesses are now turning their attention to growth. Growth is a common pursuit. Customers are calling for it. Financial markets are calling for it. Employees are asking for it because they want an exciting and stimu lating environment in which to work. If a business doesn't grow, it will eventually die because knowledge workers ofthe 21 st century won't want to work with or for a business that's not growing. Skilled workers have plenty of options to choose from as demand for knowledge workers escalates around the world.

Cooperative Process Management by Y Waern Pdf

The characteristics of "Co-operative Process Management" covered in this book concern the requirements of the dynamic situation "per se" as well as the requirements of the co-operation. Important factors are that no single person can have an overview of the situation; that expertise is distributed both temporally and qualitatively; that the ongoing process has to be represented in some way whether or not computerized; that co-operation is dependent on formal as well as informal information transfer; that predictions of the developing situation have to be performed; and that knowledge and skills of the participants must develop on different levels. What results is a book which covers analyses, field studies, micro-world studies, training and the creation of computer artefacts under the Co-operative Process Management umbrella.; This book should be of interest to those engaged in research or building applications in a dynamic co-operative information technology environment. It presents the work of some of the world's leading researchers from the four corners of CSCW, HCI, Process Control and Cognitive Ergonomics

Computer-Assisted Management and Control of Manufacturing Systems by Spyros G. Tzafestas Pdf

Modem manufacturing systems involve many processes and operations that can be monitored and controlled at several levels of intelligence. At the highest level there is a computer that supervises the various manufacturing functions, whereas at the lowest level there are stand alone computer controlled systems of manufacturing processes and robotic cells. Until recenty computer-aided manufacturing systems constituted isolated "islands" of automation, each oriented to a particular application, but present day systems offer integrated approaches to manufacturing and enterprise operations. These modem systems, known as computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems, can easily meet the current performance and manufacturing competitiveness requirements under strong environmental changes. CIM systems are much of a challenge, and imply a systemic approach to the design and operation of a manufacturing enterprise. Actualy, a CIM system must take into account in a unified way the following three views : the user view, the technology view, and the enterprise view. This means that CIM includes both the engineering and enterprise planning and control activities, as well as the information flow activities across all the stages of the system.

This Proceedings volume contains articles presented at the CIRP-Sponsored Inter- tional Conference on Digital Enterprise Technology (DET2009) that takes place December 14–16, 2009 in Hong Kong. This is the 6th DET conference in the series and the first to be held in Asia. Professor Paul Maropoulos initiated, hosted and chaired the 1st International DET Conference held in 2002 at the University of D- ham. Since this inaugural first DET conference, DET conference series has been s- cessfully held in 2004 at Seattle, Washington USA, in 2006 at Setubal Portugal, in 2007 at Bath England, and in 2008 at Nantes France. The DET2009 conference continues to bring together International expertise from the academic and industrial fields, pushing forward the boundaries of research kno- edge and best practice in digital enterprise technology for design and manufacturing, and logistics and supply chain management. Over 120 papers from over 10 countries have been accepted for presentation at DET2009 and inclusion in this Proceedings volume after stringent refereeing process. On behalf of the organizing and program committees, the Editors are grateful to the many people who have made DET2009 possible: to the authors and presenters, es- cially the keynote speakers, to those who have diligently reviewed submissions, to members of International Scientific Committee, Organizing Committee and Advisory Committes, and to colleagues for their hard work in sorting out all the arrangements. We would also like to extend our gratitude to DET2009 sponsors, co-organizers, and supporting organizations.
