Analysis of 1997 Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey Results and Plans for the 2001 Survey by International Monetary Fund. Statistics Dept. Pdf

Analysis and Plans, presents an assessment of 1997 survey data and a summary of improvements introduced, as a result of countries' participation in the 1997 Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey, into national systems for collecting data on international (cross-border) portfolio investment The chapter reviews developments that occurred in international financial markets in the 1980s and 1990s, and the Godeaux Report assessment and recommendations about global data on international portfolio investment flows and stocks. The objectives set for the 1997 survey, the scope of survey results, and the process by which results have been assessed in the chapter. Since publication of the Godeaux Report, substantial expansion and evolution have occurred in exchange and over-the-counter markets for financial derivatives covering a range of financial risks. These markets now have the capacity, in effect, to change the currencies, maturities, and marketability of the financial instruments underlying associated derivative contracts. It is recommended that vigorous efforts should be made to secure the participation of more major investing countries in order to address the under-reporting of global portfolio investment assets and to confirm the reliability of the global data on portfolio investment liabilities.

This Technical Assistance Report discusses the findings and recommendations made by the IMF mission about the Coordinated Direct Investment Survey and Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey in Costa Rica. It was observed that the practices followed to prepare external statistics employed adequate data collection instruments and appropriate methodologies. The mission stresses the importance of defining and implementing, in the short term, a work program to convert the complete balance of payments and International Investment Position historical series using the sixth edition of the Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual (BPM6) presentation. The conversion of time series to BPM6 should be accompanied by a methodological note explaining the characteristics of the new series and specifying which data were estimated in accordance with the new classification.

This Technical Assistance Report discusses the findings and recommendations made by the IMF mission about the compilation of Coordinated Direct Investment Survey and Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey (CPIS) in El Salvador. The mission recommended the authorities to research the nature of the information available that may be useful for starting the CPIS. This entails discussions regarding the forms designed during the mission for requesting information from new sources. It was also recommended to continue efforts to improve the coverage of surveys applied to nonfinancial private sector enterprises, with emphasis on the largest enterprises that are still reluctant to respond to the balance-of-payments questionnaires.

First, it examines asymmetries at global level; second, it examines asymmetries between CDIS reported and derived data for individual economies; and third, the paper analyzes data at bilateral economy level. Bilateral Financial Linkages and Global Imbalances by Mr.Francesco Strobbe,Mr.Gian Milesi-Ferretti,Ms.Natalia T. Tamirisa Pdf

We present a novel and comprehensive dataset of bilateral gross and net external positions in various financial instruments for the main advanced and emerging economies and regions, designed to improve our understanding of cross-border financial linkages. The data show no strong correspondence between country or region pairs with the largest gross versus net external positions, and the importance of international financial centers, including offshore centers, in intermediating financial flows. We also highlight some important data gaps in completing a network of cross-border holdings, related to the limited available information on the size and geographical pattern of external claims and liabilities of offshore centers, oil exporters, and other mostly emerging markets.

Financial Integration and Rebalancing in Asia by Ms.Runchana Pongsaparn,Mr.Olaf Unteroberdoerster Pdf

The paper shows that Asia's degree of financial integration, both with the world and within the region remains low by various measures. The paper also provides empirical evidence that greater financial integration can support economic rebalancing in statistically meaningful ways. The implication is that in the debate on managing capital inflows the longer-term benefits of financial openness for broader-based growth should not be forgotten.
