Copygirl by Anna Mitchael,Michelle Sassa Pdf

“A high-octane, electric look at Madison Avenue craziness from a pair who’ve been there and done that.”—Publishers Weekly One woman attempts to beat the boys club at their own game in this wickedly funny novel that is both a takedown of the advertising industry and an inspiring story about breaking through the glass ceiling. Twenty-something copywriter Kay Carlson has landed her dream job at the top ad agency in New York City, but it turns out life at the edgiest shop in town is less “Lean in” and more #MeToo. Talent and hard work don’t count as much as winning the approval of her hotshot creative director, Elliott, whose idea of team-building is bullying his boy tribe to tag along to the strip club. Meanwhile, Kay is stuck at the office penning puns for the cat food account none of the cool kids will touch. When the agency's biggest client threatens to fire them, Kay realizes her job will be first on the chopping block if she doesn't find a way to outshine the old regime. Winning another account will require all her creativity and strength, but can Kay find the confidence to risk it all so she can rewrite the rules from the corner office? Or will she be on the first bus back to Jersey, too washed up to write copy for the phone book?

Copygirl by Anna Mitchael,Michelle Sassa Pdf

"Mad Men meets The Devil Wears Prada in this lively debut about a young woman working at the hippest ad agency in New York... So. You want to work in advertising. The glitz, the glamour, the cocktail-fueled brainstorming sessions and Xbox breaks. Sounds like a dream job, right? Wrong. The reality can be a nightmare. There are five simple rules for succeeding in the ad world--and I think I've already broken every single one... 1) Never let them see you cry. Even if your best friend breaks your heart. And posts it all over social media. 2) Be one of the boys. And, if you were born with the wrong equipment, flaunt what you've got to distract them while you get ahead. 3) Come up with the perfect pitch in an instant--or have your resume ready to go at all times. 4) Trust no one. Seriously. If you don't watch your back, they'll steal your ideas, your pride, even your stapler. 5) Most importantly, don't ever, under any circumstances, be a CopyGirl. Trust me. I know."--

The Tender Bar by J. R. Moehringer Pdf

Now a major Amazon film directed by George Clooney and starring Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, Lily Rabe, and Christopher Lloyd, a raucous, poignant, luminously written memoir about a boy striving to become a man, and his romance with a bar, in the tradition of This Boy’s Life and The Liar’s Club—with a new Afterword. J.R. Moehringer grew up captivated by a voice. It was the voice of his father, a New York City disc jockey who vanished before J.R. spoke his first word. Sitting on the stoop, pressing an ear to the radio, J.R. would strain to hear in that plummy baritone the secrets of masculinity and identity. Though J.R.'s mother was his world, his rock, he craved something more, something faintly and hauntingly audible only in The Voice. At eight years old, suddenly unable to find The Voice on the radio, J.R. turned in desperation to the bar on the corner, where he found a rousing chorus of new voices. The alphas along the bar—including J.R.'s Uncle Charlie, a Humphrey Bogart look-alike; Colt, a Yogi Bear sound-alike; and Joey D, a softhearted brawler—took J.R. to the beach, to ballgames, and ultimately into their circle. They taught J.R., tended him, and provided a kind of fathering-by-committee. Torn between the stirring example of his mother and the lurid romance of the bar, J.R. tried to forge a self somewhere in the center. But when it was time for J.R. to leave home, the bar became an increasingly seductive sanctuary, a place to return and regroup during his picaresque journeys. Time and again the bar offered shelter from failure, rejection, heartbreak—and eventually from reality. In the grand tradition of landmark memoirs, The Tender Bar is suspenseful, wrenching, and achingly funny. A classic American story of self-invention and escape, of the fierce love between a single mother and an only son, it's also a moving portrait of one boy's struggle to become a man, and an unforgettable depiction of how men remain, at heart, lost boys. Saving Thanehaven by Catherine Jinks Pdf

Noble is a knight with a heart that's true and, well, noble. With his not-so-trusty sword, Smite, he fights his way through a vicious, unfriendly landscape, sure (or at least, he thinks he's sure) that one day he'll defeat the bad guys (whoever they are) and win the heart (at least he guesses that's the idea) of a beautiful princess. Then one day Rufus comes along and turns his world upside down. Rufus has his own ideas about how to get ahead: don't fight, negotiate! Don't play by the rules! Suddenly, life is more interesting--and less painful--than ever before. But the new rules are harder to live by than the old ones, and suddenly, it appears possible that Rufus might have an ulterior motive--at the very least! With a slippery, ever twisting plot that is set inside a very confused computer, Catherine Jinks's latest novel will pull in fans of adventure, computer games, and just plain fun. Summary of J.R. Moehringer's The Tender Bar by Milkyway Media Pdf

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Book Preview: #1 When I was seven years old, I saw nine men in orange softball uniforms racing around Memorial Field, the silhouette of Charles Dickens silkscreened on their chests. They were competitors, but they never stopped laughing. I laughed harder than anyone. #2 I remember the game well, and the beginning of my relationship with time. I wanted to watch the men forever, so I could understand what was so funny. I lived with my grandfather, Grandpa, and my mother’s two grown siblings. #3 My father was a popular rock ’n’ roll disc jockey, and his plummy baritone flew down the Hudson River. He would speak each day into a large microphone in New York City, and his voice would burst from the radio on Grandpa’s kitchen table. #4 The Voice was my only connection to the masculine world. I listened so attentively to The Voice that I became a prodigy at selective listening, which I thought was a gift until it proved to be a curse.

Taking the Land by Colin James Isbister Pdf

Taking the Land This book, the 5th in the series, is about overcoming or taking the Land. Every now and again it's good to get back to basics. On the one hand we've got our legal standing (us in Christ), and on the other our literal state (Christ in us). When we claim our legal standing - "Us in Christ," we are hidden. We are in Christ. When God looks at us, He only sees Jesus. This is our legal standing, us in Christ, and it is declared in the Word of God (a done deal) and we accept it by faith and need to stand on it. Because we are in Christ we are justified. We are now acquitted and declared righteous before God. This has nothing to do with us or anything we can do in our own strength. Our justification comes only by the grace of God - we cannot earn it. Our literal state, Christ in us, is the second side of the salvation coin, the born again experience. New life is imparted at regeneration and as we yield and submit ourselves to Christ's Spirit in us we are changed more and more into His image. Confusion often comes, however, when these two important truths - our legal standing and our literal State - are transposed or used incorrectly. If they are we may very well experience condemnation and leave strife and confusion everywhere we go. Our approach to God is based on our right standing (our hidden state) not on our literal state. Conversely, our approach to our neighbour is based on our literal state (not our hidden state). Hopefuly our neighbour will see Christ in us (the fruit of the Spirit), but also he might see the (warts and all) other side of us too. Taking the Land is intended to both inform and encourage.

Reporting from Washington by Donald A. Ritchie Pdf

Donald Ritchie offers a vibrant chronicle of news coverage in our nation's capital, from the early days of radio and print reporting and the heyday of the wire services to the brave new world of the Internet. Beginning with 1932, when a newly elected FDR energized the sleepy capital, Ritchie highlights the dramatic changes in journalism that have occurred in the last seven decades. We meet legendary columnists--including Walter Lippmann, Joseph Alsop, and Drew Pearson --as well as the great investigative reporters, from Paul Y. Anderson to the two green Washington Post reporters who launched the political story of the decade--Woodward and Bernstein. We read of the rise of radio news--fought tooth and nail by the print barons--and of such pioneers as Edward R. Murrow, H. V. Kaltenborn, and Elmer Davis. Ritchie also offers a vivid history of TV news, from the early days of Meet the Press, to Huntley and Brinkley and Walter Cronkite, to the cable revolution led by C-SPAN and CNN. In addition, he compares political news on the Internet to the alternative press of the '60s and '70s; describes how black reporters slowly broke into the white press corps (helped mightily by FDR's White House); discusses path-breaking woman reporters such as Sarah McClendon and Helen Thomas, and much more. From Walter Winchell to Matt Drudge, the people who cover Washington politics are among the most colorful and influential in American news. Reporting from Washington offers an unforgettable portrait of these figures as well as of the dramatic changes in American journalism in the twentieth century.

Key Readings in Journalism brings together over thirty essential writings that every student of journalism should know. Designed as a primary text for undergraduate students, each reading was carefully chosen in response to extensive surveys from educators reflecting on the needs of today’s journalism classroom. Readings range from critical and historical studies of journalism, such as Walter Lippmann’s Public Opinion and Michael Schudson’s Discovering the News, to examples of classic reporting, such as Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward’s All the President’s Men. They are supplemented by additional readings to broaden the volume’s scope in every dimension, including gender, race, and nationality. The volume is arranged thematically to enable students to think deeply and broadly about journalism—its development, its practice, its key individuals and institutions, its social impact, and its future—and section introductions and headnotes precede each reading to provide context and key points for discussion.

Radio Girl by Carol Brendler Pdf

Can a girl from a middle-class Irish Catholic family living in Newark, New Jersey, in 1938 find fame and fortune (or even a job) as a radio star? Tune in to this unforgettable historical novel to find out. Poignant, often hilarious, it's the story of a family in crisis. Just as artful deception, smoke and mirrors characterize radio reality, so lies, secrets, and profound misunderstandings mark fourteen-year-old Cece Maloney's life: her secret job at a radio station, a cheating father, an aunt who may be romantically involved with the parish priest, a boy-crazed best friend, and a ham radio operator and would-be soldier both lying to their parents. The worlds collide on the night of Orson Welles's famous "The War of the Worlds" broadcast. As thousands flee in panic from the alleged Martian invasion, Cece must expose the truth about the radio hoax and confront the truth about her own and her family's dishonesty.

Encyclopedia of American Humorists by Steven H. Gale Pdf

First published in 1988, this book contains entries on famous American Humorists. Humor has been present in American literature, from the beginning, and has developed characteristics that reflect the American character, both regional and national. Although American literature was, in the past, treated as inferior to British literature, there has always been a large popular audience for the genre, which this book shows. The figures with entries in this encyclopedia not only amuse in their writing, but also aim to enlighten- setting out to expose the foibles and foolishness of society and the individuals who compose it. It is the manner in which these authors try to accomplish this end that determines whether they appear in the volume. Indeed, the book will demonstrate that the best humor has at its base, a ready understanding of human nature.
