Lockdown by Daniel Briggs,Luke Telford,Anthony Lloyd,Anthony Ellis,Justin Kotzé Pdf

This book asks whether the decision to lock down the world was justified in proportion to the potential harms and risks generated by the Covid-19 virus. Drawing on global, empirical data, it explores and exposes the social harms induced by lockdowns, many of which are 'hidden', including joblessness, mental health problems and an intensification of societal inequalities and divisions. It offers data-driven case studies on harms such as domestic violence, child abuse, the distress of being ordered to stay at home, and the numerous harms associated with the new wealth industries. It explores why some people weren't compliant with lockdown restrictions and examines the already vulnerable social groups who were disproportionally affected by lockdown including those who were locked in (care home residents), locked up (prisoners), and locked out (migrant workers, refugees). The book closes with a brief discussion on what the future might look like as we enter a post-Covid world, drawing on cutting-edge social theory.

Billions Under Lockdown by Abantika Ghosh Pdf

When WHO first declared COVID-19 a global pandemic in March 2020, there was a great deal of apprehension about how India - the country with the highest TB cases and diabetes, inadequate health infrastructure and a population of 1.3 billion - would fare. Between the Janata Curfew and the first vaccinations, a massive machinery has been working as seamlessly as possible to make sure that, despite some missteps and missed infections, India conquers what has been the greatest challenge the world has encountered in decades. Covering the pandemic from the start, first for The Indian Express and then for ThePrint, Abantika Ghosh has had a ringside view of India's battle against the pandemic. A thrilling tale of unnamed thousands battling against a little-understood virus from the frontlines, Billions Under Lockdown brings that gripping theatre and its dramatis personae to life.

Vulnerable by Colleen M. Flood,Vanessa MacDonnell,Jane Philpott,Sophie Thériault,Sridhar Venkatapuram Pdf

The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease known as COVID-19, has infected people in 212 countries so far and on every continent except Antarctica. Vast changes to our home lives, social interactions, government functioning and relations between countries have swept the world in a few months and are difficult to hold in one’s mind at one time. That is why a collaborative effort such as this edited, multidisciplinary collection is needed. This book confronts the vulnerabilities and interconnectedness made visible by the pandemic and its consequences, along with the legal, ethical and policy responses. These include vulnerabilities for people who have been harmed or will be harmed by the virus directly and those harmed by measures taken to slow its relentless march; vulnerabilities exposed in our institutions, governance and legal structures; and vulnerabilities in other countries and at the global level where persistent injustices harm us all. Hopefully, COVID-19 will forces us to deeply reflect on how we govern and our policy priorities; to focus preparedness, precaution, and recovery to include all, not just some. Published in English with some chapters in French.

Just drink the bleach; surviving one year of Covid, Lockdown and False-news by tudor lomas Pdf

Millions died, health-care systems were overwhelmed and our deepest values challenged. The pandemic of 2020-21 took us to the edge, it destroyed our way of life and it undermined trust. On 8th March 2020 I shut myself away (a Brit in Amsterdam) before anyone else we know (we had co-morbidities and didn't want to die!) I searched for help from the victims of Spanish flu. I didn’t find much so I wrote this warts-and-all 'lived experience' for my young grandson, so he'd know what we went through and how the world changed -- the chaos, the confusion, the fear and the frequent stupidities. The chapter titles summarise the shifting story of surviving the virus, the lockdown and the destabilising torrent of false-news. It’s a day by day running journal of what happened, what we got wrong and what it means to us now, written with the author's young grandson in mind! Thirty-one chapters covering the key 15 months to mid-summer 2021. . . . "vivid, gripping first-hand account; essential reading" -- Jonathan Burton . . . . "upbeat, lively; philosophical reflection of a pivotal year!" -- Dr Kit Byatt . . . . "The structure and chapter outline are brilliant and enticing" -- Steve Richards . . . . "extremely readable and profound" -- Joanna Czechowska . .

The Wuhan Lockdown by Guobin Yang Pdf

A metropolis with a population of about 11 million, Wuhan sits at the crossroads of China. It was here that in the last days of 2019, the first reports of a mysterious new form of pneumonia emerged. Before long, an abrupt and unprecedented lockdown was declared—the first of many such responses to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world. This book tells the dramatic story of the Wuhan lockdown in the voices of the city’s own people. Using a vast archive of more than 6,000 diaries, the sociologist Guobin Yang vividly depicts how the city coped during the crisis. He analyzes how the state managed—or mismanaged—the lockdown and explores how Wuhan’s residents responded by taking on increasingly active roles. Yang demonstrates that citizen engagement—whether public action or the civic inaction of staying at home—was essential in the effort to fight the pandemic. The book features compelling stories of citizens and civic groups in their struggle against COVID-19: physicians, patients, volunteers, government officials, feminist organizers, social media commentators, and even aunties loudly swearing at party officials. These snapshots from the lockdown capture China at a critical moment, revealing the intricacies of politics, citizenship, morality, community, and digital technology. Presenting the extraordinary experiences of ordinary people, The Wuhan Lockdown is an unparalleled account of the first moments of the crisis that would define the age.

COVID-19 Lockdown by Etch Shaheen Pdf

Is this really happening? I watch in almost disbelief that all schools and businesses are closed across the country. I watch on TV, read online and hear what reporters, politicians, governmental officials and many in the medical community are saying and it just does not add up. The information I am hearing in the media does not correlate well with what I see and what I hear from many physician colleagues across the country. I understand that COVID-19 can be bad but as a doctor, I question is this much fear and panic warranted? What is the risk to me, you or our families? Is this virus as bad as many report? Do masks protect us and if so, which are better? How can we protect ourselves? I just cannot help but get a funny feeling that something is not right. Am I missing something? Is the public not being told something? Is there some other or ulterior motive for all of this? How can the predictions be so off? How many people have really died? How are the number of deaths calculated? Why can't we get answers? I realized there are many questions and no one seems to really have answers. I get the feeling I am in a bad dream or an episode of the Twilight zone. I decided to do what I normally do when things don't add up or are confusing, I did research. I investigated for myself and instead of trusting opinions, I trusted data. After doing extensive reading, discussing with many colleagues and professionals, and much analysis, I discovered that there is a lot of information that many do not know. If they did, perhaps people would not be as fearful or as panicked. People may be surprised, even shocked to learn how the number of deaths are "calculated" as opposed to actually being counted. People will be surprised about testing. The types, number of tests and the inaccuracy of many of them. When you read about the consequences of the lockdown, you will realize that the lockdown has significant consequences well beyond ruining the economy. The shutdown may ultimately cause more deaths than the virus itself. When I set off to research this important topic, I was in search of the truth, whatever it may be. The pandemic and decisions that must be made are complicated. Anyone who says otherwise probably does not have a grasp of the complexity of the matter. But, once you read Part 1 and Part 2 of the series, you will gain information and facts that will reinforce what you believe, make you think differently, better understand the issues and hopefully gain more perspective on the matter. You will see the answers to these questions and many more: 1) What is the Coronavirus and where did it really come from? 2) What is the difference between the Coronavirus and COVID-19? Very important difference 3) How many people have caught or tested positive for coronavirus? 4) How many people have died from COVID-19? How is this number calculated? 5) What types of tests are there for Coronavirus? How accurate are they? 6) Why were the predictions so wrong? 7) What are the consequences of the lockdown? Deaths? Financial? Suffering? 8) What "mistakes" may have been made? 9) How can we be better prepared in the future or prevent a similar pandemic in the future? After reading this series of books, you will likely know more than many politicians, government officials and reporters on TV. I encourage you to read this, learn the information and then reach your own conclusions. Don't be AFRAID or PANIC...Be INFORMED!

Letters from Lockdown by Claire Foster-Gilbert Pdf

During the first months of the coronavirus lockdown, Claire Foster-Gilbert, director of Westminster Abbey Institute, wrote twelve weekly letters to Britain’s public servants. Intended to strengthen their response to the rapidly changing needs of an increasingly unfamiliar world, these letters chart a heroic journey through initial uncertainty and crushing trials toward unprecedented unity and transformed resolve. Rather than bunker down, she asks us to consider: what might we discover, imagine, and change for the better as a result of the pandemic? Letters from the Lockdown presents the twelve original letters alongside new, deeply personal accounts from public servants on the job. Together, this collection provides an opportunity to reflect on how public values meet practice as the global crisis unfolds.

When China Sneezes by Cynthia McKinney Pdf

The 2019 novel Corona Virus, now COVID-19, stole global headlines in the opening months of 2020, and its many impacts are still to play out. The common adage, “If the US sneezes, the world catches a cold” is now demonstrable in a multiplicity of ways, but it is China that has sneezed. This anthology provides insight into the nature of global pandemics such as SARS, MERS, Ebola and HIV/AIDs, then focuses on Wuhan, where COVID-19 broke out -- though patient zero is as yet unknown. It examines the massive effort that China has undertaken since the outbreak to contain its spread, and includes personal stories of the first lockdown experiences. But the impact may be even more grave on the global economy than it is on global health. National and international analysts address the economic impact both within China’s industrial heartland and on global business, as borders close, entire regions are on lockdown, world airlines cancel flights, major US corporations in China shut their doors, factory floors empty. and global supply chains break down, millions lose their jobs and small businesses tank.. Stocks and the prices of gold and oil are impacted. Soon after the COVID-19 outbreak was announced and the extraordinary quarantine response by China was effected, it was learned that Event 201, a global coronavirus pandemic simulation was held just months earlier, in which a global coronavirus pandemic killed 65 million people. Many questions arise concerning BIg Pharma's push for vaccines, and the mainstream dismissal of the possibility of alternative treatments such as HCQ. Other disturbing questions have arisen: Has the disruption been overblown to inflict damage on China as part of a trade war? On the United States, which faces massive damage to its economy in the midst of an increasingly bitter political divide? What are the biowarfare implications –in the Wuhan instance, where China’s first BSL-4 level laboratory is situated, or in the future in general, given the spread of BSL-4 level laboratories worldwide and most extensively the US, as states and private entities conduct research into germ warfare, including the use of bat-generated viruses, for both offensive and defensive purposes, putting the entire world at risk of accidental leakage or worse? Is this truly a pandemic -- or is it a plandemic, and if so, to what end? What are the likely consequences, intended and not.
