Dr Bucke Revisited by Pearl Hawkins Pdf

Dr Bucke, a Canadian, died shortly after his treatise on cosmic consciousness was published in 1901, just as the author's grandmother, Edith Walters, was about to begin her cosmic conscious journey. Edith Walters was the product of the 1904 Welsh Religious Revival that reverberated around the world. An advanced soul, she was to found her own church, The Church of Nazareth, and to teach by personal example and by spiritual interpretation of the Holy Bible what Bucke had expounded via an intellectual treatise: The Kingdom of Heaven is within you. In essence, this is the same message taught by every mystic since the beginning of recorded history. Bucke takes one bold step further by identifying that statement as an evolving spiritual faculty inherent in human beings. He sees it as an evolutionary process, increasing in strength through the centuries, from when we first danced around the totem pole to the full Brahmic Splendour experienced by ordinary folk today. Survey 2003, Part Two of this book, supports Bucke's view, whilst calling for long-term, in-depth research into this neglected area of human experience. Enlightenment, Born Again, Illumination, Conversion, Transfiguration, Brahmic Splendour, Cosmic Consciousness; different names from different cultures to describe the same event the world over. The Western mind is decidedly sceptical about 'God matters', especially the scientific establishment. Though fiercely resisted (and still is), that was all set to change during the first quarter of the twentieth century when quantum physics turned the worldview upside down. Physicists are finding it increasingly difficult to avoid the profound implication of particle interaction with consciousness. As Professor Walters observed, 'We are the stuff of which stars are made.' The cosmic code has arrived in a way we least expected.

Cosmic Consciousness by Richard Burke Pdf

Richard M. Bucke's astonishing treatise on the human mind discusses and attempts to explain mystical experiences in the context of evolutionary change in the brain. During his mid-thirties, Bucke underwent a feeling of intense revelation and felt distinctly enlightened for a short time. Although the period of enlightenment passed, it had an immense impact upon Bucke's outlook, steering his personal and professional life in a directions he had never before envisioned. He found the experience a permanent boon to his well-being, and was able to work and enjoy life more than he formerly had. This book is an attempt to explain the various mystical feelings of enlightenment which humans have experienced over the millennia of recorded history. Bucke's opinion is that these phenomena are becoming commoner over time, and represent an evolution of the human mind. He postulates that these experiences will become commoner as centuries go by, and become accepted as an ordinary, then eventually as a necessary or innate part of human life. The term and title of this book, 'Cosmic Consciousness', is shorthand for the state which human beings enter during a mystical experience. A higher mental echelon free of fear or negative emotions, and characterized by greater perception and understanding of the world, Bucke stresses that Cosmic Consciousness cannot be adequately explained in spoken language. The experience in itself is indescribably different; those who attempt to couch it in words inevitably fall short, or even appear deceptive to other, skeptical individuals. In an attempt to convince the reader that Cosmic Consciousness exists and is already instrumental to the human condition, Bucke examines a series of people he believes also underwent such a state. The figures he discusses include religious figures such as Mohammed and St. John of the Cross, philosophers such as Socrates and Leo Tze, scientists such as Francis Bacon, and authors such as Benedict Spinoza, Walt Whitman and William Blake. This early text of psychology sees Bucke speak freely about the mystical and spiritual aspects of the human mind. At the time, the discipline was in its infancy, and philosophical discussions of unusual, spiritual experiences were a welcome addition. Although many of Bucke's views have been disproved or refuted by testing and research, Cosmic Consciousness continues to be considered a classic for its incisive, frank discussions of unusual experiences. It is today considered a good companion text to the masterwork of William James; The Varieties of Religious Experience.

Richard Maurice Bucke's Cosmic Consciousness by Jeff Carreira Pdf

A fresh look at a modern spiritual classic. This is an edited, updated and interpreted edition of Richard Maurice Bucke's spiritual classic Cosmic Consciousness: A Study in the Evolution of the Human Mind. Bucke originally published his magnificent treatise in 1901 and it has been read, admired and even revered ever since. In this edition you will find the same insights and inspirations of the original text written in modern language and edited with modern sensibilities. The purpose here is not to improve upon the original, but to make its great wisdom more accessible to readers and spiritual seekers of today. When Jeff Carreira first encountered the book Cosmic Consciousness, he found a vision of conscious evolution that rang deeply resonant with his own spiritual experiences while contextualizing them within a vast narrative of universal history. Of course, the language and ideas of even a work as great as this can become dated with time. Languages change, new ideas develop, and many readers find the original text difficult to approach. Often the wisdom of spiritual classics is simply incorporated into the books and insights of present-day authors with minimal reference to the original source. This edition offers a different possibility. It attempts to preserve the wisdom and logical flow of the original book in a creatively edited and interpreted text that can be freshly appreciated by a new audience. This edition of Cosmic Consciousness is offered to honor the spirit and brilliance of the original.

Cosmic Consciousness by Richard Maurice Bucke Pdf

What is Cosmic Consciousness ? The present volume is an attempt to answer this question ; but notwithstanding it seems well to make a short prefatory statement in as plain language as possible so as to open the door, as it were, for the more elaborate exposition to be attempted in the body of the work. Cosmic Conciousness, then, is a higher form of consciousness than that possessed by the ordinary man...

Cosmic Consciousness by M. D. Richard Maurice Bucke Pdf

Cosmic Consciousness: A Study in the Evolution of the Human Mind is Richard Bucke's theory that our mental states are evolving and that to date we have experienced three stages in the development of consciousness: the 'simple consciousness' of animals, the 'self-consciousness' of the vast majority of humans (reason, self awareness, imagination, etc.), and in some cases 'cosmic consciousness'; a mystical state of being beyond 'self consciousness' and the next stage of human development. Bucke hypothesized that 'cosmic consciousness' is slowly beginning to appear in humans and will eventually spread widely throughout the human race. He posited that certain notable individuals throughout history have demonstrated that they have attained 'cosmic consciousness'. In the book he cites examples such as Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, Dante, St Paul, Francis Bacon, William Blake, and his close friend Walt Whitman. Whitman, an American poet and journalist described cosmic consciousness as 'ineffable light, light rare, untellable, light beyond all signs, descriptions and languages.' At the age of thirty-five Bucke found himself in this elevated mental state and he describes (in the third person) the manifestations leading up to it; '1. The person, suddenly, without warning, has a sense of being immersed in a flame, or rose-colored cloud, or perhaps rather a sense that the mind is itself filled with such a cloud of haze. 2. At the same instant he is, as it were, bathed in an emotion of joy, assurance, triumph, salvation. 3. Simultaneously or instantly following the above sense and emotional experiences there comes to the person an intellectual illumination quite impossible to describe. Like a flash there is presented to his consciousness a clear conception (a vision) in outline of the meaning and drift of the universe. He does not come to believe merely; but he sees and knows that the cosmos, which to the self conscious mind seems made up of dead matter, is in fact far otherwise-is in very truth a living presence. He sees that instead of men being, as it were, patches of life scattered through an infinite sea of non-living substance, they are in reality specks of relative death in an infinite ocean of life. He sees that the life which is in man is eternal, as all life is eternal; that the soul of man is as immortal as God is; that the universe is so built and ordered that without any peradventure all things work together for the good of each and all; that the foundation principle of the world is what we call love, and that the happiness of every individual is in the long run absolutely certain.' He goes on to say, 'The person who passes through this experience will learn in the few minutes, or even moments, of its continuance more than in months or years of study, and he will learn much that no study ever taught or can teach.' After reading Bucke's writings, P. D. Ouspensky, the respected Russian Philosopher echoed his comments in his book Tertium Organum; 'Cosmic Consciousness is a third form, which is as far above Self Consciousness as is that above Simple Consciousness. The prime characteristic Cosmic Consciousness is, as its name implies, a consciousness of the cosmos, that is, of the life and order of the universe. Along with the consciousness of the cosmos there occurs an intellectual enlightenment or illumination which alone would place the individual on a new plane of existence-would make him almost a member of a new species.'
