Canada Counts by Charles Pachter Pdf

As a result of the success of M is for Moose, Canadian children can rhyme off their ABCs with images of ducks, kayaks, moose, and Lake Winnipeg shimmering in their imaginations. Now children can learn their numbers with Canada Counts. On these pages, new artwork illustrates numbers from 1 to 20, as well as other important Canadian numbers such as 1867 and 1982. There may be 1 walking boy, but there are 3 territories, 4 seasons, and 9 Supreme Court justices. With Canada Counts, Charles Pachter has written another love letter to our country.

Counting: How We Use Numbers to Decide What Matters by Deborah Stone Pdf

“Required reading for anyone who’s interested in the truth.” —Robert Reich In a post-Trumpian world where COVID rates soar and Americans wage near–civil war about election results, Deborah Stone’s Counting promises to transform how we think about numbers. Contrary to what you learned in kindergarten, counting is more art than arithmetic. In fact, numbers are just as much creatures of the human imagination as poetry and painting; the simplest tally starts with judgments about what counts. In a nation whose Constitution originally counted a slave as three-fifths of a person and where algorithms disproportionately consign Black Americans to prison, it is now more important than ever to understand how numbers can be both weapons of the powerful and tools of resistance. With her “signature brilliance” (Robert Kuttner), eminent political scientist Deborah Stone delivers a “mild-altering” work (Jacob Hacker) that shows “how being in thrall to numbers is misguided and dangerous” (New York Times Book Review).

Optimizing the Duration of Point Counts for Monitoring Trends in Bird Populations by Jared Verner Pdf

Minute-by-minute analysis of point counts of birds in mixed-conifer forests in the Sierra National Forest, central California, showed that cumulative counts of species and individuals increased in a curvilinear fashion but did not reach asymptotes after 10 minutes of counting. Comparison of the expected number of individuals counted per hour with various combinations of counting time and noncounting times for record keeping and travel between counting stations showed that 10-minute counts were most efficient in most cases. Counting longer than 10 minutes is not recommended, because other increased risk of double counting some individuals.
