Country Nuclear Fuel Cycle Profiles by International Atomic Energy Agency Pdf

In recent years, activities related to the nuclear fuel cycle have expanded globally. In addition, the complexity of the nuclear fuel cycle market has increased with the emergence of new providers of fuel cycle services. In this context, a need was perceived for a compilation of country profiles on nuclear fuel cycle activities in a form which could be easily understood both by experts and by the public, and which should lead to a greater understanding of these activities worldwide. Furthermore, such information would improve the transparency of nuclear energy development in general. The first edition was published in 2001 and showed the status of the nuclear fuel cycle at the end of 1999. Essentially, this second edition represents the status of the nuclear fuel cycle at the end of 2002 and consists of two parts: the first part is a review of worldwide activities related to the nuclear fuel cycle; the second comprises the country profiles, reflecting each country's status with regard to nuclear fuel cycle activities. The second part incorporates a graphical representation of material flow in the nuclear fuel cycle of each country.

Country Nuclear Power Profiles by International Atomic Energy Agency Pdf

The preparation of Country Nuclear Power Profiles (CNPP) was initiated within the framework of the IAEA's programme on assessment and feedback of nuclear power plant performance. It responded to a need for a database and a technical publication containing a description of the energy and economic situation, the energy and the electricity sector, and the primary organizations involved in nuclear power in IAEA Member States. The CNPP covers background information on the status and development of nuclear power programmes in countries having nuclear plants in operation and/or plants under construction. It reviews the organizational and industrial aspects of nuclear power programmes in participating countries, and provides information about the relevant legislative, regulatory and international frameworks in each country. The CNPP compiles the current issues in the new environment within which the electricity and nuclear sector operates, i.e. energy policy, and privatization and deregulation in these sectors, the role of government, nuclear energy and climate change, and safety and waste management, which differ from country to country. Brazil by International Atomic Energy Agency Pdf

This publication is the product of an international effort to develop a novel approach to the comprehensive assessment of national energy systems within a sustainable development context. It represents the first of a series of national studies being conducted through a partnership initiative under the World Summit on Sustainable Development and the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development. The study comprises a quantitative and qualitative analysis of Brazil's energy needs, supply and security; domestic resources; technology development and innovation; and alternative future scenarios taking into consideration sustainable development criteria and goals defined by Brazilian experts. Social, economic and environmental issues and trends are examined in detail using statistical analysis of historical data, integrated demand and supply modeling systems and energy indicators for sustainable development. The quantitative assessment is accompanied by discussions of major institutional and infrastructural considerations. The report summarizes the analyses, identifies major energy priority areas for Brazil and explores policy options useful to decision makers and specialists in energy and the environment.--Publisher's description.

Uranium Enrichment and Nuclear Weapon Proliferation by Allan S. Krass,Peter Boskma,Boelie Elzen,Wim A. Smit,Stockholm International Peace Research Institute Pdf

Originally published in 1983, this book presents both the technical and political information necessary to evaluate the emerging threat to world security posed by recent advances in uranium enrichment technology. Uranium enrichment has played a relatively quiet but important role in the history of efforts by a number of nations to acquire nuclear weapons and by a number of others to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. For many years the uranium enrichment industry was dominated by a single method, gaseous diffusion, which was technically complex, extremely capital-intensive, and highly inefficient in its use of energy. As long as this remained true, only the richest and most technically advanced nations could afford to pursue the enrichment route to weapon acquisition. But during the 1970s this situation changed dramatically. Several new and far more accessible enrichment techniques were developed, stimulated largely by the anticipation of a rapidly growing demand for enrichment services by the world-wide nuclear power industry. This proliferation of new techniques, coupled with the subsequent contraction of the commercial market for enriched uranium, has created a situation in which uranium enrichment technology might well become the most important contributor to further nuclear weapon proliferation. Some of the issues addressed in this book are: A technical analysis of the most important enrichment techniques in a form that is relevant to analysis of proliferation risks; A detailed projection of the world demand for uranium enrichment services; A summary and critique of present institutional non-proliferation arrangements in the world enrichment industry, and An identification of the states most likely to pursue the enrichment route to acquisition of nuclear weapons.

The Technological and Economic Future of Nuclear Power by Reinhard Haas,Lutz Mez,Amela Ajanovic Pdf

This open access book discusses the eroding economics of nuclear power for electricity generation as well as technical, legal, and political acceptance issues. The use of nuclear power for electricity generation is still a heavily disputed issue. Aside from technical risks, safety issues, and the unsolved problem of nuclear waste disposal, the economic performance is currently a major barrier. In recent years, the costs have skyrocketed especially in the European countries and North America. At the same time, the costs of alternatives such as photovoltaics and wind power have significantly decreased. Plutonium and Highly Enriched Uranium, 1996 by David Albright,Frans Berkhout,William Walker Pdf

Plutonium and highly enriched uranium (HEU) are the basic materials used in nuclear weapons. Plutonium also plays an important part in the generation of nuclear electricity. Knowing how much plutonium and HEU exists, where and in which form is vital for international security and nuclear commerce. This book is a thorough revision of the World Inventory of Plutonium and highly Enriched Uranium, 1992. It provides a rigorous and comprehensive assessment of the amounts of plutonium and HEU in military and civilian programmes, in nuclear and non-nuclear weapon states, and in countries seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. The capibilities that exist for producing these materials around the world are examined in depth, as are the policy issues raised by them. Containing much new information, this book is indispensable to all those concerned with the great contemporary issues in international nuclear relations: arms reductions in the nuclear weapon states, nuclear proliferation, nuclear smuggling, the roles of plutonium and enriched uranium in the nuclear fuel-cycle, and the disposition of surplus weapon material.

Critical Analysis of World Uranium Resources by Susan Hall,Margaret Coleman Pdf

The U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Information Administration (EIA) joined with the U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to analyze the world uranium supply and demand balance. To evaluate short- term primary supply (0-15 years), the analysis focused on Reasonably Assured Resources (RAR), which are resources pro- jected with a high degree of geologic assurance and considered to be economically feasible to mine. Such resources include uranium resources from mines currently in production as well as resources that are in the stages of feasibility or of being permit- ted. Sources of secondary supply for uranium, such as stockpiles and reprocessed fuel, were also examined. To evaluate long- term primary supply, estimates of uranium from unconventional and from undiscovered resources were analyzed.
