Cracked Shell by Debby Shanahan Pdf

This book is from the perspective of someone who was belittled for her weight, stuttering, and learning disability. This book is from my gut on a level that I thought would never surface after being stifled for so long. It's a look at how I managed to emerge as a successful teacher and human being regardless of what others thought of me and how they treated me. The title "scapegoat" has followed me since a very young age. It was made to be okay to treat me badly; not anymore. This book is a representation and a guide to let people know that they do not bring you down without you lifting your way up and out from their influences, and words of negativity. I am doing this my way on my own terms without permission from anyone uninhibitedly.

Cracking the Shell by Fidelis Okoro Pdf

Usamba, the Jewel of Africa, has fought its way to freedom on the watery battlefield of her island nation, a fierce battle leading to a glorious victory, a victory memorialized in its Coat of Arms: a black elephant standing on a thick white blanket, spread on a raging sea, and on whose back stands a plump tortoise from whose rear end protrudes a beacon of light. In one of its major cities lives Akem, seeking a coat of another kind of arms, rowing his boat on another sea of turbulence. The waves are strong, but so is the will. The journey is long, but his destination is clear. Or is it?

Iced by Ray Shell Pdf

Cornelius Washington is brimming with ambition and talent before his life is torn apart by a crack addiction. Taking the form of a diary and written in an arresting stream-of-consciousness style, Iced ponders the gritty realities of Cornelius's present and past upheavals that have led him here. Iced paints a portrait of being Black in America and the ways marginalised communities suffer the consequences of shortsighted political policies. First published in 1993, in the wake of the crack epidemic, Iced mixes the syncopated language of the streets with poetry from the heart to take the reader deep into the horrifying world of addiction.

Plates and shells with cracks by George C. Sih Pdf

This third volume of a series on Mechanies of Fraeture deals with eraeks in plates and shelIs. It was noted in Volume 2 on three-dimensional eraek problems that additional free surfaees can lead to substantial mathematical complexities, often making the analysis unmanageable. The theory of plates and shelIs forms a part of the theory of elasticity in which eertain physieal assumptions are made on the basis that the distanee between two bounded surfaees, either fiat or eurved, is small in eomparison with the overall dimen sions of the body. In modern times, the broad and frequent applieations of plate- and shell-like struetural members have aeted as a stimulus to whieh engineers and researchers in the field of fracture meehanies have responded with a wide variety of solutions of teehnieal importanee. These eontributions are covered in this book so that the reader may gain an understanding of how analytieal treat me nt s ofplates and shells containing initial imperfeetions in the form of eraeks are earried out. The development of plate and shell theories has involved long standing controversy on the eonsisteney of omitting eertain small terms and at the same time retaining others of the same order of magnitude. This defieieney depends on the ratio of the plate or shell thiekness, h, to other eharaeteristie dimensions and eannot be eompletely resolved in view of the approximations inherent in the transverse dependence of the extensional and bending stresses.

Comparative Biomechanics by Steven Vogel Pdf

The classic textbook on comparative biomechanics—revised and expanded Why do you switch from walking to running at a specific speed? Why do tall trees rarely blow over in high winds? And why does a spore ejected into air at seventy miles per hour travel only a fraction of an inch? Comparative Biomechanics is the first and only textbook that takes a comprehensive look at the mechanical aspects of life—covering animals and plants, structure and movement, and solids and fluids. An ideal entry point into the ways living creatures interact with their immediate physical world, this revised and updated edition examines how the forms and activities of animals and plants reflect the materials available to nature, considers rules for fluid flow and structural design, and explores how organisms contend with environmental forces. Drawing on physics and mechanical engineering, Steven Vogel looks at how animals swim and fly, modes of terrestrial locomotion, organism responses to winds and water currents, circulatory and suspension-feeding systems, and the relationship between size and mechanical design. He also investigates links between the properties of biological materials—such as spider silk, jellyfish jelly, and muscle—and their structural and functional roles. Early chapters and appendices introduce relevant physical variables for quantification, and problem sets are provided at the end of each chapter. Comparative Biomechanics is useful for physical scientists and engineers seeking a guide to state-of-the-art biomechanics. For a wider audience, the textbook establishes the basic biological context for applied areas—including ergonomics, orthopedics, mechanical prosthetics, kinesiology, sports medicine, and biomimetics—and provides materials for exhibit designers at science museums. Problem sets at the ends of chapters Appendices cover basic background information Updated and expanded documentation and materials Revised figures and text Increased coverage of friction, viscoelastic materials, surface tension, diverse modes of locomotion, and biomimetics

Cracked Shell Whole Yolk by Margo Viola Pdf

"Cracked Shell Whole Yolk" is a collection of life events from the mind of a woman who survives domestic violence. Margo Viola escapes her abuser through the only avenue available "Death". After cheating death herself, she in turn had crossed the line and committed the sin of having another person's life taken. Cracked Shell Whole Yolk depicts the trials and tribulations of Margo's entire life path, coupled with her overwhelming desire to make right what she had wronged. Margo shows an innate ability to overcome adversity. Margo's life story proves that there are desperate changes needed in our Judicial System to narrow the brood spectrum of disparity, while handling Domestic Violence cases. Margo uses her bitter life experience as a tool for self-betterement and a guide to help others. She displays how one woman picked up her life, with heightened clarity and determination. Her strives marked the truth by living proof, of how one individual can make a difference. Margo's Memoir prompts society to take a cold hard look at the true dynamics of Domestic Violence, and how it plagues our community, thus erodes our family core. Cracked Shell/Whole Yolk is a thrilling adventure of a woman's life that soars at each turn of the page. Her experience touches all of us as a collective whole. Margo truly emerges from a "Cracked Shell" into a fully rounded "Whole Yolk"!

7th RILEM International Conference on Cracking in Pavements by A. Scarpas,Niki Kringos,I. Al-Qadi,Loizos A. Pdf

In the recent past, new materials, laboratory and in-situ testing methods and construction techniques have been introduced. In addition, modern computational techniques such as the finite element method enable the utilization of sophisticated constitutive models for realistic model-based predictions of the response of pavements. The 7th RILEM International Conference on Cracking of Pavements provided an international forum for the exchange of ideas, information and knowledge amongst experts involved in computational analysis, material production, experimental characterization, design and construction of pavements. All submitted contributions were subjected to an exhaustive refereed peer review procedure by the Scientific Committee, the Editors and a large group of international experts in the topic. On the basis of their recommendations, 129 contributions which best suited the goals and the objectives of the Conference were chosen for presentation and inclusion in the Proceedings. The strong message that emanates from the accepted contributions is that, by accounting for the idiosyncrasies of the response of pavement engineering materials, modern sophisticated constitutive models in combination with new experimental material characterization and construction techniques provide a powerful arsenal for understanding and designing against the mechanisms and the processes causing cracking and pavement response deterioration. As such they enable the adoption of truly "mechanistic" design methodologies. The papers represent the following topics: Laboratory evaluation of asphalt concrete cracking potential; Pavement cracking detection; Field investigation of pavement cracking; Pavement cracking modeling response, crack analysis and damage prediction; Performance of concrete pavements and white toppings; Fatigue cracking and damage characterization of asphalt concrete; Evaluation of the effectiveness of asphalt concrete modification; Crack growth parameters and mechanisms; Evaluation, quantification and modeling of asphalt healing properties; Reinforcement and interlayer systems for crack mitigation; Thermal and low temperature cracking of pavements; and Cracking propensity of WMA and recycled asphalts.
