CRC Handbook of Optical Resolutions via Diastereomeric Salt Formation by David Kozma Pdf

Optically active compounds are gaining ever-increasing importance in organic chemistry, both in the academic and the industrial arenas. The rational synthesis of the growing number of chiral chemicals, drugs, and natural products demands efficient methods for producing these compounds in an enantiomerically, highly pure form. Despite the available

Enantiomer Separation by Fumio Toda Pdf

In spite of important advances in asymmetric synthesis, chiral compounds cannot all be obtained in a pure state by asymmetric synthesis. As a result, enantiomer separation remains an important technique for obtaining optically active materials. Although asymmetric synthesis is a once-only procedure, an enantiomer separation process can be repeated until the optically pure sample is obtained. This book discusses several new enantiomer separation methods using modern techniques developed by experts in the field. These methods consist mainly of the following three types: 1) Enantiomer separation by inclusion complexation with a chiral host compound 2) Enantiomer separation using biological methods 3) Enantiomer separation by HPLC chromatography using a column containing a chiral stationary phase. Separation of a racemic compound has been called “optical resolution” or simply “resolution”. Nowadays, the descriptions “enantiomer resolution” or “enantiomer separation” are also commonly used. Accordingly, “Enantiomer Separation” is used in the title of this book. The editor and all chapter contributors hope that this book is helpful for scientists and engineers working in this field.

Engineering Crystallography: From Molecule to Crystal to Functional Form by Kevin J. Roberts,Robert Docherty,Rui Tamura Pdf

This book highlights the current state-of-the-art regarding the application of applied crystallographic methodologies for understanding, predicting and controlling the transformation from the molecular to crystalline state with the latter exhibiting pre-defined properties. This philosophy is built around the fundamental principles underpinning the three inter-connected themes of Form (what), Formation (how) and Function (why). Topics covered include: molecular and crystal structure, chirality and ferromagnetism, supramolecular assembly, defects and reactivity, morphology and surface energetics. Approaches for preparing crystals and nano-crystals with novel physical, chemical and mechanical properties include: crystallisation, seeding, phase diagrams, polymorphic control, chiral separation, ultrasonic techniques and mechano-chemistry. The vision is realised through examination of a range of advanced analytical characterisation techniques including in-situ studies. The work is underpinned through an unprecedented structural perspective of molecular features, solid-state packing arrangements and surface energetics as well as in-situ studies. This work will be of interest to researchers, industrialists, intellectual property specialists and policy makers interested in the latest developments in the design and supply of advanced high added-value organic solid-form materials and product composites.

The field of crystallization holds many challenges, with the physical and chemical complexity of the crystallization process being core to the dynamic nature of the field. Exciting advances are currently being achieved in the areas of nanoparticle formation, product and particle design and methods of particle characterisation. There is also significant progress and innovation in the design, scale-up and control of crystallizers. These key developments are reflected in the session themes of the 14th BIWIC (Bremen International Workshop on Industrial Crystallization) with the technical programme incorporating a wide range of topics, such as; The formation and stabilisation of nano particles; Polymorphs and co-crystals in pharmaceutical preparation; Product and particle design; Kinetics of crystallization and measurement of crystal properties; Freeze, Antisolvent, Reactive and Melt crystallization; and Design, scale-up and control of crystallization processes at the industrial scale.

Practical Process Research and Development by Neal G. Anderson Pdf

Designed to provide a comprehensive, step-by-step approach to organic process research and development in the pharmaceutical, fine chemical, and agricultural chemical industries, this book describes the steps taken, following synthesis and evaluation, to bring key compounds to market in a cost-effective manner. It describes hands-on, step-by-step, approaches to solving process development problems, including route, reagent, and solvent selection; optimising catalytic reactions; chiral syntheses; and "green chemistry." Second Edition highlights: . Reflects the current thinking in chemical process R&D for small molecules . Retains similar structure and orientation to the first edition. . Contains approx. 85% new material . Primarily new examples (work-up and prospective considerations for pilot plant and manufacturing scale-up) . Some new/expanded topics (e.g. green chemistry, genotoxins, enzymatic processes) . Replaces the first edition, although the first edition contains useful older examples that readers may refer to Provides insights into generating rugged, practical, cost-effective processes for the chemical preparation of "small molecules" Breaks down process optimization into route, reagent and solvent selection, development of reaction conditions, workup, crystallizations and more Presents guidelines for implementing and troubleshooting processes

Asymmetry in Biological Homochirality by David Hochberg Pdf

Chirality, or handedness, is a fundamental physical characteristic, which spans the length scales ranging from elementary particles to the chiral asymmetry of spiral galaxies. The way in which chirality in chemistry, or molecular handedness, may have emerged in a primitive terrestrial environment, and how it can be triggered, amplified, and transferred, are deeply challenging problems rooted in both fundamental scientific interests and the technological potentials for science and society. Chirality constitutes a unifying feature of the living world and is a prime driving force for molecular selection and genetic evolution in biology. In this book, we offer a selection of five distinct approaches to this problem by leading experts in the field. The selected topics range from protein chirality and its relevance to protein ageing, protein aggregation and neurodegeneration, entropy production associated with chiral symmetry breaking in closed systems, chiral oscillations in polymerization models involving higher-order oligomers, the mirror symmetry breaking in liquids and its implications for the development of homochirality in abiogenesis, the role of chirality in the chemical sciences, and some philosophical implications of chirality.
