The Creation of the Presidency, 1775-1789 by Charles C. Thach Pdf

Excerpt from The Creation of the Presidency, 1775-1789: A Study in Constitutional History An eminent political scientist has been heard to remark that, while all political scientists necessarily know some history, there are but few historians who knew political science. The writer of the present study has little hope of upsetting this judgment. But he does claim that the political scientist has kept the office of the presidency of the United States too exclusively within the sphere of his investigations, whereby an organic institution has been too much considered as a mere catalogue of powers. Were it not for that peculiar relation between the executive and the judicial departments which has made the latter very chary in undertaking to say authoritatively what the presidency is and what is is not, this criticism would not be valid. The history of national executive power might then be read in the Supreme Court Reports. But, in the absence of an authority to speak with finality on many vital matters, such, for example, as the nature of the vesting clause, it has been left to the shifting forces of politics to determine the nature of the office, the proper sphere of historical investigation. A further result of this state of things is an enhancement of interest in origins of the office. Lacking authoritative dicta, we may well seek for enlightment concerning what the presidency is in an analysis of what the presidency was intended to be. Creating the American Presidency, 1775-1789 by William B. Michaelsen Pdf

A highly detailed examination of the forces contributing to the creation of the Presidency at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The author focuses on the manner in which experienced American politicians perceptively reevaluated existing political philosophy and created a strong Presidency as a major force in a system of checks and balances. Includes a unique presentation of the convention debates in a topical form as twelve separate debates, and evaluates the ratification of the Constitution with specific reference to the Federalist and Antifederalist arguments on the Presidency. Concludes with the election and inauguration of George Washington as the first President. An excellent book for courses on the Presidency, American Government, and National Politics.

The American Presidents, Washington to Tyler by Robert A. Nowlan Pdf

As of 2012, only 43 men have held the office of the President of the United States. Some have been sanctified and some reviled. This historical work addresses the careers of the first ten presidents, men who made vital contributions not only to the office of the presidency, but to the course of the fledgling nation. From Washington through Tyler, every term is recounted in detail and each presidential profile provides as many as a hundred quotations (with full source notes) by the president, his friends, family, historians, and others. Each profile ends with an extensive bibliography of books about the president, his principles and policies, and also provides suggestion for further reading. Rigorously nonpartisan in approach, this detail-rich text describes the early years of what may well be one of the most demanding jobs in the world.

The American Presidency by William G. Howell Pdf

How institutions shape the American presidency This incisive undergraduate textbook emphasizes the institutional sources of presidential power and executive governance, enabling students to think more clearly and systematically about the American presidency at a time when media coverage of the White House is awash in anecdotes and personalities. William Howell offers unparalleled perspective on the world’s most powerful office, from its original design in the Constitution to its historical growth over time; its elections and transitions to governance; its interactions with Congress, the courts, and the federal bureaucracy; and its persistent efforts to shape public policy. Comprehensive in scope and rooted in the latest scholarship, The American Presidency is the perfect guide for studying the presidency at a time of acute partisan polarization and popular anxiety about the health and well-being of the republic. Focuses on the institutional structures that presidents must navigate, the incentives and opportunities that drive them, and the constraints they routinely confront Shows how legislators, judges, bureaucrats, the media, and the broader public shape the contours and limits of presidential power Encourages students to view the institutional presidency as not just an object of study but a way of thinking about executive politics Highlights the lasting effects of important historical moments on the institutional presidency Enables students to grapple with enduring themes of power, rules, norms, and organization that undergird democracy
