This book provides an analysis of the two concepts of power and crime and posits that criminologists can learn more about these concepts by incorporating ideas from disciplines outside of criminology. Although arguably a 'rendezvous' discipline, Vincenzo Ruggiero argues that criminology can gain much insight from other fields such as the political sciences, ethics, social theory, critical legal studies, economic theory, and classical literature. Power, Crime, and Mystification is one of the classics of radical criminology -a compelling account of how power and powerlessness operate within the criminal justice system. Questioning the orthodox view that it is powerlessness that leads to serious criminal behaviour, Steven Box focuses on the serious crimes committed by those in positions of power and privilege, particularly in government agencies and multinational corporations. He also points out that some relatively powerless groups, such as women, hardly commit any serious crimes at all. He suggests that crime can be the extreme form of otherwise socially sanctioned behaviour and, in taking this approach, provides coherent answers to the questions How does a society define crime? and 'What is the difference between justice and social control?. A major implication of Steven Box's stimulating analysis is that definitions of serious crime, the criminal justice process, and government penal policies are all in need of review. This book presents a Foucauldian problematisation analysis of crime, with a particular focus on the twentieth century. It considers how crime has been conceived as problem and, by scrutinising the responses that have been adapted to deal with crime, demonstrates how a range of power modalities have evolved throughout the twentieth century. Christian Borch shows how the tendency of criminologists to focus on either disciplinary power or governmentality has neglected the broader complex of Foucault’s concerns: ignoring its historical underpinnings, whilst for the most part limiting studies to only very recent developments, without giving sufficient attention to their historical backdrop. The book uses developments in Denmark – developments that can be readily identified in most other western countries – as a paradigmatic case for understanding how crime has been problematised in the West. Focusing on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it looks at the consequences of the 1752 Murder Act. This book examines a victim-offender dialogue program that offers victims of severe violence an opportunity to meet face-to-face with their incarcerated offenders.
