Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: very good, Addis Ababa University, language: English, abstract: This research project has explored and critically examined the practice of advertisement and its ethical considerations in Ethiopia particularly the practice in Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation. A qualitative inquiry approach was employed for answering the investigation queries and to attain objectives of the study. The sample advertisement clips of this study were rhetorically analyzed. Moreover, four focus group discussions and twelve individual in-depth interviews have been used to further tighten the data obtained from the qualitative content analysis segment of the study and to explore the audiences’ perception towards advertisements. 30 commercials broadcasted in three years period were purposefully selected. The selected commercials were analyzed and interpreted thematically to find out their apparent content. Furthermore, relevant literatures were also reviewed. The professional practice and the cooperative leadership among stakeholders in the sector were seen critically. The cultural and ethical aspects of the advertisements got analyzed in this study. The extensive literature review on media and advertisement, with universal ethics theory, facilitated the structuring of the research questions, which addressed the ethical issues in the advertising sector. The moral standard ruling the advertising industry; the ethical guidelines and the proclamation of advertisement with the universal principles of truth, human dignity and social responsibility are clearly stated in this study. In this qualitative inquiry, data were gathered through in depth interviews and focus group discussions. In addition to this, qualitative content analysis was employed. This was done by viewing and reviewing advertisement clips through the eyes of rhetorical criticism. The interview process lasted two months. The analysis of this study has been grouped in to two. These are; the findings of critical analysis by the researcher (done through viewing the advertisement clips) and findings from the focus group discussions and in depth interviews. Findings implied that most of the advertisements analyzed in this study might not favor the social values and norms. Most of the advertisement clips analyzed under this study seem limiting the role and the capacity of women and children. In some advertisements, women are represented as sex objects. [...]

Real-World Media Ethics by Philippe Perebinossoff Pdf

The Los Angeles Times recently reported that the word "integrity was the most looked up word on Merriam-Webster's online dictionary, suggesting that people are looking for guidance in a scandal-driven world. Issues of ethics and the media continue to dominate our awareness and present real challenges in our day-to-day work. This book shows the ethical decision-making process in action using tools of critical analysis and evaluation. Real-World Media Ethics is written in a friendly and approachable voice. It succeeds in offering an honest, frontline-aware and realistic sense of the ethical situations faced by entertainment and journalism professionals every day-in the real world. Most of the other books about media ethics focus mostly on journalism; this book, however, covers not just journalistic ethics but also ethics in the landscape of mass media, including public relations, the entertainment industry, and other forms of visual communication. The author includes numerous case studies about current headlines that readers will already be familiar with, providing realistic and engaging scenarios about when, how, and why ethics count.

The practice of development journalism in the Ethiopian media landscape by Abayneh Mihret Pdf

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Communications - Journalism, Journalism Professions, grade: 4.00, Addis Ababa University (College of Journalism and Communications), course: Journalism and communiction, language: English, abstract: The government media are event oriented. They lack professional integrity for the public interest by ensuring transparency and accountability by exposing corruption and investigating crimes that hinder the national development process through ethical participation in the development activity in a process oriented manner and are not finding solutions for development problems through participating in the grassroots. Structural censorship, self-censorship of journalists, unethical conduct of journalists, professional limitations, law commitment of media leaders to enforce the policy, lower level of public culture of information exchange, trespassing of editorial policy and government official’s perception of DJ as a development success only reporting are challenging the practice. In contrast, privately-owned media in Ethiopia covers less development issues than the government media, gives very little time and space for the development issues of Ethiopia compared to the government media. But, in that little amount of coverage, they focus on government development actor’s failure and dissimulate non-state actor’s failure. Paradoxically, the private media in Ethiopia similar to government media are not applying investigative journalism and watchdog the public property. They have no role in exposing corruptions and crimes committed on public properties. Practically, they are also event oriented and Addis Ababa-based, one-sided story tellers more than the government media. Resource limitation (human, material and financial), wrong perception of government PR officers and officials towards private media and prohibition of information, government tax and null incentive for private media, lower level of public culture for information exchange and freedom of expression are the top line challenges which affected their coverage of development issues of the private media.

Advertising Ethics - An Oxymoron? by Harald Blocher Pdf

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2003 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 1,7, Northumbria University, language: English, abstract: Advertising as the most visible element of the marketing-mix is concerning its ethical dimension actually in the midst of controversary. The expression of “advertisng ethics” is nowadays a good example when being asked to name an oxymoron. This project therefore concentrates on ethics applied to the advertising profession. The ethical dimension of advertising and its impact on consumers in general as well as on children as a target group is the main focus of the study. The aim of the study will be reached through drawing attention to the two major philosophical theories applied to business as well as advertising, utilitarianism and deontology. In order to gain a fair understanding of the subject, advertising and its role in society are examined. Furthermore, the ethical issues in advertising are presented based on the so-called legal and moral discourse. Since the method of advertising to children actually raises a lot of controversial opinions, this part of the legal discourse is examined in more detail. Due to these controversies, a primary research has been executed, with the aim to collect three controversial opinions of institutions involved in the debate of ethics in advertising. The participants in this debate are industry, advertising agencies and the third point of view of a so-called opinion leader. The study closes with the discussion of research findings with reference to the literature review, followed by the overall conclusion.

Ethical Issues of Human Cloning by Patrick Kimuyu Pdf

Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Medicine - Medical Frontiers and Special Areas, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: This essay will give an overview on the ethics of human cloning. It will provide a concise summary on the development of cloning and then discuss the scientific, societal and religious ethical perspectives to the issue. Genetic engineering is currently gaining unprecedented popularity owing to its usefulness in solving numerous biological problems. It has become a powerful tool in virtually all biological aspects of life. In medicine, genetic engineering has proven to be reliable in treating and managing biological disorders. It has also gained popularity in addressing the challenges posed by chronic diseases such as diabetes. The discovery of the so-called Induced Adult Stem-Cell Therapy and the industrial production of Insulin for treatment of diabetes seem to have shaped the social perspective of genetic engineering. On the other hand, genetic engineering technology has become one of the most reliable biological tools for increasing food production for rapidly growing global population. However, despite the numerous benefits of genetic engineering, immense criticism has emerged, especially with regard to the ethical perspective of the technology. Scientists are in unprecedented dilemma of whether the reproduction of cloned organisms will cause undesirable physical and behavioral traits, leading to the alteration of ‘normal’ organisms. Currently, there has emerged immense debate on human cloning leading to the shift of ethical perception on genetic engineering. Human cloning is believed to be one of the most popular biotechnological approaches with widespread adoption in the medical field. This is probably so because it has enabled medical professionals to address some of the most challenging health issues by providing them with extensive medical approach into an array of diseases and health conditions. Some of the medical applications, which have created unprecedented ethical debates among the global population, are the Somatic-cell Nuclear Transfer and test tube baby technology.

Financing Africa by Samuel Munzele Maimbo,Issa Faye,Thouraya Triki Pdf

Financing Africa takes stock of Africa's financial systems in light of recent changes in the global financial system --including the greater risk aversion of international investors, a shift in economic and financial powers towards emerging markets and the regulatory reform debate - and the increasing role of technology. Using a wider and more detailed array of data than previous publications, we observe a trend towards financial deepening, more stability and more inclusion leading up to the crisis; serious challenges, however, continue, including limited access to financial services, focus on short-term contracts and hidden fragility, related to weak regulatory frameworks, undue government interference and governance deficiencies. Our policy analysis therefore focuses on (i) expanding outreach, (ii) fostering long-term finance and (iii) improving regulation and supervision. We identify the positive role of innovation and competition, a stronger focus on non-traditional financial service providers, and more emphasis on demand-side constraints as priority areas for policy actions. Specifically, competition from new players outside the banking system, including telecomm companies can increase outreach with technological innovation that changes the economics of retail finance. Moving beyond national stock exchanges that are not sustainable in most African countries towards regional solutions and over-the-counter trades can help foster long-term finance, as can addressing governance challenges in contractual savings institutions, including life insurance companies and pension funds. Finally, there is a need to look beyond supply-side constraints towards users of financial services, focusing more on financial literacy of households and firms, but also consumer protection. In formulating policy messages, we carefully distinguish between different country groupings, differentiating -- among others -- between low- and middle-income and small and larger economies, with a special focus on resource-based economies and post-conflict countries. This book reaches out to both policy makers concerned about a more inclusive and effective financial system and other stakeholders, including practitioners and development partners. With this book we aim to contribute to the on-going financial sector debate on Africa, with the ultimate goal of faster economic development and poverty reduction.

Critical analysis of Hofstede’s model of cultural dimensions by Kristin Piepenburg Pdf

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Oxford Brookes University, language: English, abstract: Global markets are changing faster than ever and increasing international competition makes it necessary for managers to understand not only the domestic culture but also the host country’s culture. Derived from globalisation, successful cross-cultural management is gaining in importance and its need for understanding of cultural differences becomes essential. Because of this it is argued that, with the increasing importance of a cross-cultural understanding, Hofstede’s (1980) model of cultural dimensions gains proportional importance and attracts notice at the same time. His study is widely used in global operating organisations within trainings and workshops. The first step of effective cross-cultural management is the awareness that cultural differences exist and domestic strategies might fail in host countries. Even though, Hofstede’s (1980) cultural study is the most important one and widely known, there are many other cultural studies, which are only partly supporting his study. For each and every model of cultural identifications arouse praise and criticism and Hofstede was not spared by criticism. The main criticism refers to the methodology Hofstede used and many authors questioned its validity and reliability. Another major critique is that the nearly 40-years old survey findings are out-dated and not of any modern value anymore. Addressing the elaborated criticisms from the literature, a personal replication study within the two countries of Germany and the UK is undertaken in order to evaluate the validity, reliability and applicability in the 21st century. This study has developed own dimension scores for Masculinity/ Femininity (MAS) and Uncertainty Avoidance (UA) for Germany and the UK and compared and evaluated these with Hofstede’s findings. The findings of this study vary from Hofstede’s findings, as according to this study the UK is more masculine and has a higher Uncertainty Avoidance score than Germany. These findings do not support Hofstede’s findings and further cultural research is recommended.
