Cruciform by Jimmy Davis Pdf

What is the Cross-Shaped Life? It is the vertical life of loving God with all your head, heart, and hands; and the horizontal life of loving others as Christ has loved you. Employing the symbols of the cruciform cathedral and the Celtic cross, Jimmy Davis uses personal stories, both humorous and heart-breaking, to encourage and equip the reader to gain a cross-shaped perspective on how he or she can be an active participant in God's community-on-mission. This book casts a vision for living as disciples of Jesus who are being shaped by the cross (gospel) into people and churches who share and show the cross (gospel) by living as sons and servants of God. As we embrace the gospel in this way we can live: in relationship to God as seekers who exalt God; in relationship to other disciples as shepherds who encourage one another; in relationship to the resources God has given us as stewards; and in relationship to those who are not disciples as sowers of the gospel of grace, engaging our neighbors, the nations, and the next generation with cross-shaped words and works. Finally, the Cruciform Life involves growing through cross-shaped spiritual disciplines and cross-shaped suffering, which together enable us to embrace and express the Cruciform Life to God, one another, and the world.

Inhabiting the Cruciform God by Michael J. Gorman Pdf

This richly synthetic reading of Paul offers a compelling argument that the heart of Paul s soteriology lies in theosis the incorporation of God s people into the life and character of the God revealed in the cross. Michael Gorman deftly integrates the results of recent debates about Pauline theology into a powerful constructive account that overcomes unfruitful dichotomies and transcends recent controversies between the New Perspective on Paul and its traditionalist critics. Gorman s important book points the way forward for understanding the nonviolent, world-transforming character of Paul s gospel. Richard B. Hays / Duke Divinity School / Provides an important corrective to segmentalized approaches to Paul. Michael Gorman lucidly connects justification to spiritual transformation. Faith, love, and action come together as theosis the taking on of the character of Christ and, so, of God. Though constantly in conversation with other scholars, Gorman has a refreshingly original approach, illuminating the lively theology of Paul. Inhabiting the Cruciform God clearly advances the field of Pauline studies. Stephen Finlan / Fordham University / In this pioneering work Michael Gorman offers a fresh way to view Paul s understanding of justification and holiness. Cutting a new path through old territory, Gorman leads us to a vision of holiness and justification rooted in the transforming power of nonviolence and the cross. His work will provide pastors with new insights for preaching and scholars with new ways to address old questions. Frank J. Matera / Catholic University of America

The Cruciform Faculty by Mark H. Heinemann,James R. Estep,Mark A. Maddix,Octavio J. Esqueda Pdf

How do Christian higher education institutions orient new faculty members to their role on a Christian campus? How do they lead faculty members toward a deeper understanding of the Christian dimension of their place in higher education? Bible Colleges, Christian Universities, and Seminaries need a resource that can be provided to faculty members or be used in faculty development discussions. This book is designed to serve as just such a resource. It provides a clear and concise portrait of the general role of faculty from a distinctively evangelical Christian perspective. We use the metanarrative of being formed by the cross to describe the “cruciform” role of professors as teachers in the classroom, mentors to the students, scholars within the academy, and servants of the church and community. Each chapter will have personal and group reflection questions and exercises to aid in application.

Cruciform Scripture by Christopher W. Skinner,Nijay K. Gupta,Andy Johnson,Drew J. Strait Pdf

What does it mean to participate in the cruciform Lord Jesus Christ so that our life together becomes a living exegesis of the gospel? Michael Gorman has been tremendously influential in exploring this question within the New Testament, particularly in the letters of Paul, the Gospel of John, and the book of Revelation. His 2001 book Cruciformity: Paul’s Narrative Spirituality of the Cross inspired a generation of scholars and was the first in a trilogy of New Testament theology devoted to exploring the role of the cross, participation in Christ, and becoming the gospel in mission. Here, an assemblage of some of the best and brightest current New Testament exegetes honor Gorman’s work with contributions of their own, each of which further explores these three critical themes in various passages of the New Testament. Cruciform Scripture is more than a tribute to a giant of biblical scholarship. Its contributors (including N. T. Wright, Sylvia Keesmaat, and Richard Hays) are masters in their own right who offer incisive interpretations of essential themes of New Testament theology and the core concerns of Christian life in community. As they reason together in this volume, they amplify one another’s voices as well as Gorman’s, modeling a way that careful reflection on Paul’s determination to “know nothing . . . except Jesus Christ and him crucified” can engender fruitful insights on the nature of discipleship. Contributors Ben C. Blackwell, Sherri Brown, Frank E. Dicken, Dennis R. Edwards, Rebekah Eklund, Dean Flemming, Patricia Fosarelli, Stephen E. Fowl, Nijay K. Gupta, Richard B. Hays, Andy Johnson, Sylvia C. Keesmaat, Brent Laytham, Christopher W. Skinner, Klyne R. Snodgrass, Drew J. Strait, and N. T. Wright.

New York Cruciform Lectionary by Jeffrey C. Anderson Pdf

For elegance and beauty, the Constantinopolitan scribes set standards rarely surpassed. The Gospel lectionary was among the books that attracted the most enthusiastic attention of scribes, illuminators, and their patrons. As an important liturgical item, the lectionary was often exquisitely decorated. The subject of this study, the lectionary in the Pierpont Morgan Library, is unusual even among such luxury manuscripts because its scribe laboriously copied every page of text in the shape of a cross. It is one of just three such manuscripts made in Constantinople around the middle of twelfth century, and it is the only one that contains narrative illustration. Jeffrey Anderson provides a full description of the manuscript, and he has translated and indexed its calendar of saints. Each of the miniatures is reproduced, described, and discussed, and Anderson relates some scenes to versions found in other Byzantine lectionaries and Gospels. The illustrations are attributed to two illuminators, and in a separate chapter Anderson situates their contributions with regard to the ruling, writing, and illumination of the pages. He also relates, through style, the cruciform lectionaries to dated twelfth-century monuments to establish their place in the history of Byzantine art.

Theoretical Damping in Roll and Rolling Effectiveness of Slender Cruciform Wings by Gaynor J. Adams Pdf

The coefficients of damping in roll and rolling effectiveness (with differential incidence of the horizontal surfaces) are determined for a slender, equal-span, cruciform wing. It is found that the coefficient of damping in ar roll is 62 percent greater than for a plane slender wing of equal aspect ratio, and that the rolling effectiveness is 53 percent less than for a plane slender wing of equal aspect ratio. The analysis can be used in the estimation of the characteristics of a slender, equal-span, cruciform wing having any specified distribution of normal velocity components on the horizontal and vertical surfaces.

Damping in Roll of Cruciform and Some Related Delta Wings at Supersonic Speeds by Herbert S. Ribner Pdf

The damping in roll of cruciform delta wings in supersonic flow has been evaluated by means of small-disturbance (linearized) wing theory; both subsonic and supersonic component stream velocities normal to the leading edges have been considered. In addition, some known two-dimensional results for rotating multibladed laminae have been applied to obtain the loading when the number of panels is changed from four to an arbitrary number, under the restriction of low aspect ratio; the damping in roll has been determined explicitly for three panels. Finally, the damping for an inifinite number of panels has been evaluated without restriction as to aspect ratio or Mach number.

Aerodynamic Properties of Cruciform-wing and Body Combinations at Subsonic, Transonic, and Supersonic Speeds by John R. Spreiter Pdf

The aerodynamic forces and moments exerted on pitched and yawed wing-body combinations consisting of a slender body of revolution and a cruciform arrangement of thin wings have been investigated by two theoretical methods. One method, an extension of the slender wing-body theory of NACA TN No. 1662, makes possible the determination of simple closed expressions for the load distribution, of simple closed expressions for the load distribution, the forces, and the moments for slender cruciform-wing and body combinations in which the wings may be dissimilar plan form. The second method treats cruciform-wing and body combinations consisting of a body of revolution and identical wings of arbitrary aspect ratio and plan form. The results are valid at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speeds.

The Ethics of the Enactment and Reception of Cruciform Love by John Frederick Pdf

Back cover: In this book, John Frederick critiques the view that Paul was operating from a Hellenistic understanding of moral formation. Rather, the ethics of Colossians were derived from the Jewish Two Ways tradition reinterpreted through a theology of Christ-like transformation through the enactment and reception of cruciform love.

The HTML of Cruciform Love by John Frederick,Eric Lewellen Pdf

The topic of the Internet is vastly underrepresented in the current literature on the intersection of technology and theology. Studies on Internet theology are certainly viewed as a topic of "special interest," relevant--it might be thought--only to eccentric academics and tech geeks. Yet, this book contends that there is no topic more pertinent to our daily walk as contemporary followers of Jesus Christ than the theological implications of the Internet. The twelve essays of this volume, though standalone pieces, also work in conjunction to investigate the themes of community and character formation in the digital realm. A host of interrelated sub-themes are represented in the book, including the application of patristic theology to contemporary Internet praxis, a demonology of the Internet, virtue ethics in cyberspace, and studies that consider the implications of Internet technology on aesthetics, personhood, and the self. Together, the chapters work toward a collaborative, constructive, cruciform theology of the Internet. The Internet is more than a supplementary component to our personal lives; rather, it is a medium of vital connection for the digital communion of the saints through the HTML of cruciform love.
