Cyclopedia of Universal History by John Clark Ridpath Pdf

Excerpt from Cyclopedia of Universal History: Embracing the Most Complete and Recent Presentation of the Subject in Two Principal Parts or Divisions of More Than Six Thousand Pages After the Africans proper, we pass to the second, or eastern, division of the Blacks. On this line we find first of all the native races of Australia. Closely' connected with these by ethnic descent are the Papuans of New Guinea and the remoter islands. The race is dis tributed in this direction as far as the Fijis; while on the north it spreads out, beginning from Borneo, through the Celebes and Philippine islands, as far as Formosa, and probably to Japan. With this excursion into the remote seas we conclude our inquiry into the character of the Black races and, in general, our study of the ethnic history of mankind. In taking leave of the theme which has so long occupied my attention, I am tempted to add some personal reflections in addition to what has been already suggested in the prefaces to the preced ing volumes. There is no kind of task with which the mind becomes so deeply involved as with the literary task. The work in this case seems to spring, not from the collocation of visible materials put into form and fashion by the hand. Tabular Views of Universal History by George Palmer Putnam Pdf

Excerpt from Tabular Views of Universal History: A Series of Chronological Tables Presenting, in Parallel Columns, a Record of the More Noteworthy Events in the History of the World From the Earliest Times Down to 1890 This chronology of historical events, originally compiled by the late George P. Putnam and forming a part of his comprehensive cyclopedia on The World's Progress, has been carefully revised and brought down to the present time, and it is now issued in a separate form in the trust that every one who needs at his elbow a convenient manual of dates may find his requirements satisfied in this volume. To teachers especially it is hoped that it may prove an important aid in imparting instruction. They more than all others ap preciate the difficulty of permanently fixing in the mind the exact time of great occurrences, and they should accordingly value any means of lessening that difficulty. Such a means, it is thought, is found in the arrangement here adopted of placing in parallel columns on facing pages the events occurring throughout the world at about the same period of time. This calls in the powerful assistance of association in enabling the memory to grasp and retain a hold of important dates by showing at a glance simultaneous occurrences in other countries. It also helps in teaching the lesson that the history of any one nation is only a part of the history of the world and that the proper way to study true history is to follow the progress of the people scattered over the face of the globe. And not of a fragmentary few gathered into one corner of it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Routledge Companion to Big History by Craig Benjamin,Esther Quaedackers,David Baker Pdf

The Routledge Companion to Big History guides readers though the variety of themes and concepts that structure contemporary scholarship in the field of big history. The volume is divided into five parts, each representing current and evolving areas of interest to the community, including big history’s relationship to science, social science, the humanities, and the future, as well as teaching big history and ‘little big histories’. Considering an ever-expanding range of theoretical, pedagogical and research topics, the book addresses such questions as what is the relationship between big history and scientific research, how are big historians working with philosophers and religious thinkers to help construct ‘meaning’, how are leading theoreticians making sense of big history and its relationship to other creation narratives and paradigms, what is ‘little big history’, and how does big history impact on thinking about the future? The book highlights the place of big history in historiographical traditions and the ways in which it can be used in education and public discourse across disciplines and at all levels. A timely collection with contributions from leading proponents in the field, it is the ideal guide for those wanting to engage with the theories and concepts behind big history.
