Advanced Composite Materials by Louis A. Pilato,Michael J. Michno Pdf
Advanced composite materials or high performance polymer composites are an unusual class of materials that possess a combination of high strength and modulus and are substantially superior to structural metals and alloys on an equal weight basis. The book provides an overview of the key components that are considered in the design of a composite, of surface chemistry, of analyses/testing, of structure/property relationships with emphasis on compressive strength and damage tolerance. Newly emerging tests, particularly open hole compression tests are expected to provide greater assurance of composite performance. This publication is an "up-to-date" treatment of leading edge areas of composite technology with literature reviewed until recently and includes thermoplastic prepregs/composites and major application areas.

Damage Tolerance and Durability of Material Systems by Kenneth L. Reifsnider,Scott W. Case Pdf
A daring, original approach to understanding and predicting the mechanical behavior of materials "Damage is an abstraction . . . Strength is an observable, an independent variable that can be measured, with clear and familiar engineering definitions." -from the Preface to Damage Tolerance and Durability of Material Systems Long-term behavior is one of the most challenging and important aspects of material engineering. There is a great need for a useful conceptual or operational framework for measuring long-term behavior. As much a revolution in philosophy as an engineering text, Damage Tolerance and Durability of Material Systems postulates a new mechanistic philosophy and methodology for predicting the remaining strength and life of engineering material. This philosophy associates the local physical changes in material states and stress states caused by time-variable applied environments with global properties and performance. There are three fundamental issues associated with the mechanical behavior of engineering materials and structures: their stiffness, strength, and life. Treating these issues from the standpoint of technical difficulty, time, and cost for characterization, and relationship to safety, reliability, liability, and economy, the authors explore such topics as: * Damage tolerance and failure modes * Factors that determine composite strength * Micromechanical models of composite stiffness and strength * Stiffness evolution * Strength evolution during damage accumulation * Non-uniform stress states * Lifetime prediction With a robust selection of example applications and case studies, this book takes a step toward the fulfillment of a vision of a future in which the prediction of physical properties from first principles will make possible the creation and application of new materials and material systems at a remarkable cost savings.
Damage Tolerance of Candidate Thermoset Composites for Use on Single Stage to Orbit Vehicles by A. T. Nettles Pdf
Abstract: Four fiber/resin systems were compared for resistance to damage and damage tolerance. One toughened epoxy and three toughened bismaleimide (BMI) resins were used, all with IM7 carbon fiber reinforcement. A statistical design of experiments technique was used to evaluate the effects of impact energy, specimen thickness, and tup diameter on the damage area as computed by C-scans, and residual compression-after-impact (CAI) strength. Results showed that two of the BMI systems sustained relatively large damage zones yet had an excellent retention of CAI strength.
Structural Integrity and Durability of Advanced Composites by Peter Beaumont,Constantinos Soutis,Alma Hodzic Pdf
Structural Integrity and Durability of Advanced Composites: Innovative Modelling Methods and Intelligent Design presents scientific and technological research from leading composite materials scientists and engineers that showcase the fundamental issues and practical problems that affect the development and exploitation of large composite structures. As predicting precisely where cracks may develop in materials under stress is an age old mystery in the design and building of large-scale engineering structures, the burden of testing to provide "fracture safe design" is imperative. Readers will learn to transfer key ideas from research and development to both the design engineer and end-user of composite materials. This comprehensive text provides the information users need to understand deformation and fracture phenomena resulting from impact, fatigue, creep, and stress corrosion cracking and how these phenomena can affect reliability, life expectancy, and the durability of structures. Care and Repair of Advanced Composites by Keith B Armstrong,William Cole,Eric Chesmar,Francois Museux Pdf
The new edition of the well known Care and Repair of Advanced Composites, 3rd Edition, improves on the usefulness of this practical guide geared towards the aerospace industry. Keith B. Armstrong, the original lead author of the first edition was still in charge of this project, counting on the expert support of Eric Chesmar, senior composites specialist at United Airlines. Mr. Chesmar is also an active member of SAE International's CACRC (Commercial Aircraft Composite Repair Committee), an elite group of industry experts dedicated to the standardization, safety, security, and efficiency of composite repairs in the airline industry. Mr. Francois Museux (Airbus) and Mr. William F. Cole II also contributed. Care and Repair of Advanced Composites, 3rd Edition, presents a fully updated approach to the training syllabus recommended for repair design engineers and composite repair mechanics. Metal bonding has been included partly because the defi nition of "composite" can be interpreted to include metal-skinned honeycomb panels, and partly because some composite parts have metal fi ttings or reinforcements that must be treated before bonding. This third edition also covers a number of the problems experienced in service, some of which may be applicable to metallic sandwich panels, offers suggestions for design improvements, including repair design as a particular topic, and regulatory changes. Care and Repair of Advanced Composites, 3rd Edition, provides solid technical information and training for a wide range of airline staff.
