The Future of Freemasonry in Denmark by Bent Okholm Pdf

The Future of Freemasonry in Denmark talks about what Freemasonry is, but also what it is not . Read about what it is that attracts more than 6 million men around the world, and read about the valuesof Freemasonry, its attitudes and relationship with today's society. Danish Freemasonry differs in important respects from international Freemasonry. Despite a ban on political and religious interference which has been in place for many years, these two areas have had a profound impact on the situation in Denmark today. Things in Denmark have gone wrong. The reader will gain an understanding of why this is and what can happen when people who do not have the right skills are given power. The second part of the book deals with the development of Freemasonry in Denmark with an emphasis on the last 60 years - including an introduction to someone who was both a great asset to the development of Freemasonry, but who also the focus of newspaper headlines here and abroad, including an article in The Telegraph under the headline, "The mysterious Mr Larsen: MI5 spy, terrorist or Walter Mitty fantasist?" Finally, the book raises the question of whether Freemasonry, as we know it and as it has been present in Denmark for the past 273 years, faces growth or decline.

Danish Lamps 1920-2019 by Malene Lytken Pdf

A richly illustrated presentation of Danish lamp design and the iconic designers who created them Lamp design is a field that continues to attract great attention, from both designers and design aficionados. Many books have come out on iconic Danish design, but this is the first to focus exclusively on Danish lamps. With Poul Henningsen's iconic PH-lamp as its point of departure, the book tells the stories behind 100 Danish lamp designs through text and images. The book introduces the reader to the inventions that enabled the first revolutionizing light sources: from the development of oil and gas lamps to the culmination in the late 19th century with the advent of incandescent light bulbs and Scandinavian functionalism. While architects and lamp designers enjoy the new possibilities afforded by the increasingly versatile LED light sources, the current retro wave has led to renewed interest in early electrical lamps. Vintage lamps fetch high prices, older models are relaunched and a large audience is interested in the history of the lamps. Lighting is a key element in 'hygge' - a warm, cosy ambience - and although Henningsen was a functionalist to the core, he had no intention of doing away with hygge. Hygge is a hot topic today, both in Denmark and abroad. Danish lamp design is not only about form. Although hard-core functionalists called for form to follow function, and function alone, real-life factors required them to compromise, and this compromise came to define Danish lamp design: hygge is a crucial quality that has to be included in the design. Thus, the purpose of the modern Danish lamp was - and is - not only to provide light but also to act as a decorative element and to spread a cosy ambience in Danish homes

The Oxford Handbook of Danish Politics by Peter Munk Christiansen,Jørgen Elklit,Peter Nedergaard Pdf

The Oxford Handbook of Danish Politics provides the most comprehensive and thorough English language book on Danish politics ever written. It features chapters by 50 leading experts who have contributed extensively to the field they write about. Why is Denmark an interesting topic for a Handbook? In some respects, Danish political institutions and political life are very similar to that of other small, North European countries such as the other Scandinavian countries and Netherland. However, in other respects, Danish politics is interesting in its own right. For instance, Denmark has a world record in minority governments. According to standard scholarly knowledge, this should result in unstable governments and a bad economy. This is not the case, however, since Denmark has a rather stable political system and a strong and robust economy among the strongest in Europe. How? The Danes have continued reservations towards the EU despite close to 50 years of EC/EU membership, and the Danes rejected the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. Still, the EU issue is handled in ways that do not call for large political battles. How? A third example is that Denmark used to be known as a tolerant and liberal society; its Jews were almost all saved during German occupation during WWII, Denmark was the first country to free pornography, and the first country to formally register same-sex couples. Yet recent Danish politics has also been associated with xenophobia and anti-Muslim sentiments. Why?

History of Design and Design Law by Tsukasa Aso,Christoph Rademacher,Jonathan Dobinson Pdf

For the first time, this book provides an up-to-date history of product design and product design law covering 17 countries — Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden), Russia, the United States, Brazil and Australia — selected for their innovative or influential approach to design or design protection. Each country is the subject of two chapters — one on the history of design and the other on the history of design law — authored by experts in design and intellectual property (IP) law. This unique interdisciplinary approach explains why and how various national design protection systems (that can include design, copyright, trade mark, competition and civil laws) developed, making it an ideal book for students, researchers and lawyers. The book also serves as an international survey of different national policy and legal responses to historical developments and specific design and legal issues allowing readers to consider their advantages and disadvantages — and so is also recommended for policy and law makers, as well as organizations that administer IP rights. Topics include the subject matter of design protection; procedural and substantive requirements; design registration; infringement; and the overlap of design rights and other IP rights. The chapters on design history provide further context to the historical development of these legal concepts by considering major design movements, key designers and iconic designs and the current state of design. The chapters highlight the connected and often complementary relationship between the two histories, not only for each country, but at the regional and international level, often as a result of government policies, trade, colonialism, immigration and globalisation. Design and design practice continue to become more global and evolve with developments in technology. At the same time, design laws are not internationally harmonized and continue to develop at the national level, with a number of significant changes occurring in recent years. This timely book shows how the lessons of the past continue to inform the future direction of design and the legal systems developed to protect it.

Tourism, Climate Change and the Geopolitics of Arctic Development by Derek R. Hall Pdf

Greenland is becoming a critically important territory in terms of tourism, climate change and competition for resource access, yet it has been poorly represented in academic literature. Tourism now features as a major source of income for the territory alongside fisheries. Cruise tourism is increasing rapidly, and might superficially appear to be best suited to Greenlandic conditions, given the lack of large-scale accommodation infrastructure and almost non-existent land routes between settlements. Ironically, one of the most spectacular tourist attractions is the large number of icebergs that are being calved as the result of glacier retreat and ice cap melting, both appearing to be taking place at ever increasing rates. As a consequence of ice removal, the territory's claimed extensive range of mineral resources, not least rare earth elements and hydrocarbons, are becoming more accessible for exploitation and, thereby, are acting increasingly as the focus for geopolitical competition. This book explores the nature of dynamics between tourism, climate change and the geopolitics of natural resource exploitation in the Arctic and examines their interrelationships specifically in the critical context of Greenland, but within a framework that emphasises the wider global implications of the outcomes of such interrelationships.

Albion's Seed by David Hackett Fischer Pdf

This fascinating book is the first volume in a projected cultural history of the United States, from the earliest English settlements to our own time. It is a history of American folkways as they have changed through time, and it argues a thesis about the importance for the United States of having been British in its cultural origins. While most people in the United States today have no British ancestors, they have assimilated regional cultures which were created by British colonists, even while preserving ethnic identities at the same time. In this sense, nearly all Americans are "Albion's Seed," no matter what their ethnicity may be. The concluding section of this remarkable book explores the ways that regional cultures have continued to dominate national politics from 1789 to 1988, and still help to shape attitudes toward education, government, gender, and violence, on which differences between American regions are greater than between European nations.

The Gesamtkunstwerk in Design and Architecture by Anders V. Munch Pdf

The history of modern design and architecture has seen many attempts to embrace and merge different art forms, and to bring art into the framing of everyday life and the organisation of modern society, in a process understood as total design or total architecture. These attempts were historically based on the romanticist idea of merging all art forms into a uniting and transgressing work of art, mostly associated with – but certainly not limited to – Richard Wagner’s theoretical writings and musical dramas. This utopian dream of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or Total Work of Art, was intended both to bring unity to the people and to bring art into the everyday life of their homes, as well as into factories, cities and even modern media. As a result, the experiments ranged from music, poetry and drama to architecture, design, visual communication and city-planning. These ideas of merging art forms into more immersive and transgressive installations or design interventions to change everyday life are widespread today, but their complex and often problematic roots are mostly ignored. Design and architecture have delivered some of the broadest and most influential experiments with the Gesamtkunstwerk, from garden cities for workers and corporate identity design to the German AEG corporation.
