Dante and Aquinas (Classic Reprint) by Philip H. Wicksteed Pdf

Excerpt from Dante and AquinasThe purpose of this book is, in the first instance, to bring out this special significance of Dante's work by helping to throw out its distinctive features against the background of the accepted and authoritative exposition of the received philo sophy and theology of his time, while at the same time enriching his utterances by relating them to the implications and presuppositions on which they are grounded. But I trust that the sketch of the scholastic philosophy, and especially of the teaching of Aquinas, necessarily subordinate as it is, may have some independent value, and may be found useful to many whose interest, or at the lowest curiosity, has been roused in relation to mediaeval philosophy, and who do not know where to turn for a disinterested and popular treat ment of the subject free from all propagandis't or polemical intention.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Reading Dante: From Here to Eternity by Prue Shaw Pdf

The best and most eloquent introduction to Dante for our time. Prue Shaw is one of the world's foremost authorities on Dante. Written with the general reader in mind, Reading Dante brings her knowledge to bear in an accessible yet expert introduction to his great poem. This is far more than an exegesis of Dante’s three-part Commedia. Shaw communicates the imaginative power, the linguistic skill and the emotional intensity of Dante’s poetry—the qualities that make the Commedia perhaps the greatest literary work of all time and not simply a medieval treatise on morality and religion. The book provides a graphic account of the complicated geography of Dante's version of the afterlife and a sure guide to thirteenth-century Florence and the people and places that influenced him. At the same time it offers a literary experience that lifts the reader into the universal realms of poetry and mythology, creating links not only to the classical world of Virgil and Ovid but also to modern art and poetry, the world of T. S. Eliot, Seamus Heaney and many others. Dante's questions are our questions: What is it to be a human being? How should we judge human behavior? What matters in life and in death? Reading Dante helps the reader to understand Dante’s answers to these timeless questions and to see how surprisingly close they sometimes are to modern answers. Reading Dante is an astonishingly lyrical work that will appeal to both those who’ve never read the Commedia and those who have. It underscores Dante's belief that poetry can change human lives.

Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III THE MIGRATIONS OF ARISTOTLE AND THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF ARISTOTELIANISM We are now to follow the fates of Aristotle and Aristotelianism, and as we shall remain throughout in much closer contact with Aristotle's actual works than we did or could with Plato's in the last chapter, it will be well to begin with a short survey of the extent and scope of Aristotle's extant works, or what pass as such. The history of his own manuscripts is a romance in itseif. They lay for a hundred and fifty years in a damp and wormy cellar in the Troad, and it is impossible to determine from the accounts that have come down to us in what relation they stood when recovered to the manuscripts current in the Aristotelian school at Athens; and it remains uncertain to this day what is the real origin of the text we now possess. Editors have been recurrently haunted by the idea that many of the existing discrepancies and difficulties it presents may be due to combination in our present corpus Aristotelicum of two different recensions. Further, there is the greatest difficulty in harmonising or even relating the early lists of Aristotle's works and characterisations of his style with the works that we now know. These matters 44 however need not much trouble us, for long before the period with which we are concerned the Aristotelian text had been fixed much as we have it now, and though certain palpably spurious works were sometimes current under his name, we shall not have to deal with them; so we may assume the canon as well as the text with which we are familiar. What, then, is the scope of Aristotle's work? In the first place there is the Organon--the group of treatises on which formal logic has rested ever since. They are an exposition of the art and...

Dante's Vision and the Circle of Knowledge by Giuseppe Mazzotta Pdf

In a masterly synthesis of historical and literary analysis, Giuseppe Mazzotta shows how medieval knowledge systems--the cycle of the liberal arts, ethics, politics, and theology--interacted with poetry and elevated the Divine Comedy to a central position in shaping all other forms of discursive knowledge. To trace the circle of Dante's intellectual concerns, Mazzotta examines the structure and aims of medieval encyclopedias, especially in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries; the medieval classification of knowledge; the battle of the arts; the role of the imagination; the tension between knowledge and vision; and Dante's theological speculations in his constitution of what Mazzotta calls aesthetic, ludic theology. As a poet, Dante puts himself at the center of intellectual debates of his time and radically redefines their configuration. In this book, Mazzotta offers powerful new readings of a poet who stands amid his culture's crisis and fragmentation, one who responds to and counters them in his work. In a critical gesture that enacts Dante's own insight, Mazzotta's practice is also a fresh contribution to the theoretical literary debates of the present. Originally published in 1992. Dante the Theologian by Denys Turner Pdf

An understanding of Dante the theologian as distinct from Dante the poet has been neglected in an appreciation of Dante's work as a whole. That is the starting-point of this vital new book. In giving theology fresh centrality, the author argues that theologians themselves should find, when they turn to Dante Alighieri, a compelling resource: whether they do so as historians of fourteenth-century Christian thought, or as interpreters of the religious issues of our own times. Expertly guiding his readers through the structure and content of the Commedia, Denys Turner reveals – in pacy and muscular prose – how Dante's aim for his masterpiece is to effect what it signifies. It is this quasi-sacramental character that renders it above all a theological treatise: whose meaning is intelligible only through poetry. Turner's Dante 'knows that both poetry and theology are necessary to the essential task and that each without the other is deficient.'
