Danville by Jeffrey K. Baldwin Pdf

Danville, created in 1824 as the county seat of Hendricks County, was the hub of government, commerce, and agriculture. Farmers sold their crops in town and shopped there. As the agricultural economy diminished, Danville became home to workers commuting to Indianapolis. Danville residents have always valued education. On May 10, 1878, at the instigation of Prof. W. F. Harper of the Central Normal School of Ladoga, 50 farm wagons from Danville arrived at Ladoga and stole the whole school, including equipment, students, faculty, and baggage. Central Normal College was then installed in the facility previously housing the Hendricks County Seminary and the Danville Academy. From 1878 to 1951, Central Normal College was a Danville institution, turning out more than 75,000 graduates destined for leadership roles in education, business, law, and politics.

Danville by Todd McGregor Yeatts Pdf

Located in South Central Virginia on the North Carolina border, Danville remains one of the most dynamic destinations in the state. The geographic region that is now Danville was home to the Morotock Indians in the 1600s and frequented by traders as early as 1673. It was not until the late 1700s that the Virginia General Assembly was petitioned to establish a Tobacco Inspection Site along the Dan River. On November 23, 1793, the Assembly approved the request and decreed that 25 acres south of the river be founded as the Town of Danville. The city's first cotton mill was constructed in 1828, and five years later the town became the City of Danville. The town served as the last capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War and was also the site of the infamous "Wreck of the Old 97"--inspiration for the popular ballad. In the more than 200 years since its founding, Danville's rich history has been driven by tobacco and textile markets.

Danville by Lindsay Merritt Pdf

Danville, known as the City of Firsts and Birthplace of the Bluegrass, is nestled in the heart of Kentucky. Its location on a branch of the Wilderness Road, a trail blazed through frontier lands by Daniel Boone and other like-minded pioneers, allowed Danville to burgeon into a political, cultural, and educational hub in the late 18th century. Danville was settled between 1783 and 1784 by Walker Daniel, for whom the town was named. A series of constitutional conventions that led to Kentucky's statehood in 1792 were held in Danville, and the town has remained an integral piece of state history since. The images in this volume reflect the firsts for which Danville is famous: the Kentucky School for the Deaf, Centre College, the home of famed physician Ephraim McDowell, and more, as well as featuring photographs of everyday life: churches, restaurants, and businesses so fondly recalled by its citizens.

Danville Revisited by Clara G. Fountain,Gary Grant Pdf

Situated along the Dan River, Danville is known historically as a major tobacco market in the 19th century. In 1865, Danville was chosen as the last capital of the Confederacy. Prosperity returned after the war with water-powered textile mills, which ushered in a 125-year legacy of Dan River Mills. Recently discovered images take the reader back in time to see Danville as it once was--a thriving boomtown on a major railroad line. From Danville to Destiny: I Got Nerve by Dr. Joyce Glaise Pdf

This book is a personal account of Dr. Glaise's family history, educational, political, and lifelong accomplishments from 1950 through 2016. Significant events highlighting her community, church, and organizational involvement and contributions to the families and citizens of Danville, other communities, including Africa, are shared. She also provides animated accounts of various friendships and travel adventures. This rich, historical narrative is woven from my experiences growing up as the daughter of two mill workers. Information transmitted from the griots in the family to relate customs, traditions, and habits in the family are the threads from which this book evolves. As in every African American family, there is usually one person who can tell the story of the family. We must have a perpetual legacy and not disconnect from our past but use it as a foundation for building our future. So it is that I decided to write my story because there are too many gems (words of wisdom) that might prove helpful in providing insight, not only to my family, but to others on this journey of life.
