Zur Entstehung des Bandes: Der Band stellt die erste Veröffentlichung im Rahmen der im Jahre 2009 gegründeten Forschungsplattform "Wiener Osteuropaforum" dar. Darin sind jene Beiträge versammelt, die aus einer im Sommersemester 2009 in Zusammenarbeit der Institute für Slawistik und für Osteuropäische Geschichte der Universität Wien gehaltenen Ringvorlesung hervorgingen. Die Absicht der Herausgeber war es, die Verbindung der Dimensionen Gesellschaft, Text und Musik und deren Bedeutung für politische Mobilisierung und politisches Handeln in Ost- und Südosteuropa darzustellen.
