The second edition of this popular guide demonstrates the process of entering and analyzing data using the latest version of SPSS (12.0), and is also appropriate for those using earlier versions of SPSS. The book is easy to follow because all procedures are outlined in a step-by-step format designed for the novice user. Students are introduced to the rationale of statistical tests and detailed explanations of results are given through clearly annotated examples of SPSS output. Topics covered range from descriptive statistics through multiple regression analysis. In addition, this guide includes topics not typically covered in other books such as probability theory, interaction effects in analysis of variance, factor analysis, and scale reliability. Chapter exercises reinforce the text examples and may be performed for further practice, for homework assignments, or in computer laboratory sessions. This book can be used in two ways: as a stand-alone manual for students wishing to learn data analysis techniques using SPSS for Windows, or in research and statistics courses to be used with a basic statistics text. The book provides hands-on experience with actual data sets, helps students choose appropriate statistical tests, illustrates the meaning of results, and provides exercises to be completed for further practice or as homework assignments. Susan B. Gerber, Ph.D. is Research Assistant Professor of Education at State University of New York at Buffalo. She is director of the Educational Technology program and holds degrees in Statistics and Educational Psychology. Kristin Voelkl Finn, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Education at Canisius College. She teaches graduate courses in research methodology and conducts research on adolescent problem behavior.

Essential First Steps to Data Analysis by Carol S. Parke Pdf

The purpose of this book is to provide instruction and guidance on preparing quantitative data sets prior to answering a study's research questions. Preparation may involve data management and manipulation tasks, data organization, structural changes to data files, or conducting preliminary analysis such as examining the scale of a variable, the validity of assumptions or the nature and extent of missing data. The oresultso from these essential first steps can also help guide a researcher in selecting the most appropriate statistical tests for his/her study. The book is intended to serve as a supplemental text in statistics or research courses offered in graduate programs in education, counseling, school psychology, behavioral sciences, and social sciences as well as undergraduate programs that contain a heavy emphasis on statistics. The content and issues covered are also beneficial for faculty and researchers who are knowledgeable about research design and able to use a statistical software package, but are unsure of the first steps to take with their data. Increasingly, faculty are forming partnerships with schools, clinics, and other institutions to help them analyze data in their extensive databases. This book can serve as a reference for helping them get existing data files in an appropriate form to run statistical analysis. This book is not a replacement for a statistics textbook. It assumes that readers have some knowledge of basic statistical concepts and use of statistical software, or that they will be learning these concepts and skills concurrently throughout the course. SPSS was chosen to illustrate the preparation, evaluation, and manipulation of data. However, students or researchers who do not use SPSS will benefit from the content since the overall structure and pedagogical approach of the book focuses heavily on the data issues and decisions to be made.

SPSS for Starters by Ton J. Cleophas,Aeilko H. Zwinderman Pdf

This small book addresses different kinds of datafiles, as commonly encountered in clinical research, and their data-analysis on SPSS Software. Some 15 years ago serious statistical analyses were conducted by specialist statisticians using ma- frame computers. Nowadays, there is ready access to statistical computing using personal computers or laptops, and this practice has changed boundaries between basic statistical methods that can be conveniently carried out on a pocket calculator and more advanced statistical methods that can only be executed on a computer. Clinical researchers currently perform basic statistics without professional help from a statistician, including t-tests and chi-square tests. With help of user-friendly software the step from such basic tests to more complex tests has become smaller, and more easy to take. It is our experience as masters’ and doctorate class teachers of the European College of Pharmaceutical Medicine (EC Socrates Project Lyon France) that s- dents are eager to master adequate command of statistical software for that purpose. However, doing so, albeit easy, still takes 20–50 steps from logging in to the final result, and all of these steps have to be learned in order for the procedures to be successful.

Because of its self-instructional nature, the beginning stu dent can learn to analyze statistical data with SPSS without outside assistance. The reader is "walked through" numerous examples that illustrate how to use the SPSS package. The results produced by SPSS are shown and discussed in each application. Each chapter demonstrates statistical procedures and provides exer cises that reinforce the text examples and can be performed for further practice. Chapter 1 of this guide describes how to start the SPSS program and how to open data files. Chapters 2 through 16 give descriptions of statistical procedures which assume that a data file has been opened. This manual describes basic de scriptive statistics through multiple regression analysis, with three chapters (7-9) that discuss probability theory. Simple definitions of statistical concepts are pro vided for each procedure.

Next Steps With SPSS by Eric L. Einspruch Pdf

Written in an easy-to-read, straightforward manner, Next Steps with SPSS introduces readers to intermediate and advanced SPSS skills. These skills are introduced and illustrated with sample programs designed to apply powerful techniques in data handling and analysis, with the output from these programs presented and interpreted. The book is organized so that it builds increasingly advanced syntax coding skills, starting with the handling of complex data files and then moving to coverage of looping and macro skills. The book then switches to more windows-oriented skills suitable for working with SPSS output (as in pivot tables and interactive graphics) and for running SPSS in an alternative mode (as in a production facility). The book then returns to coding skills by introducing the more advanced topics of the scripting facility (which has broad application to handling data and creating output) and the matrix command language.
