David Maljkovic: Also on View by David Maljkovic,Karsten Wales Lund Pdf

Throughout an ever-shifting body of work, David Maljkovi? returns to ?the question of form,? asking how considerations of form itself might illuminate the ebb and flow of ideologies, for example, or the overlaying of past, present, and future. While embracing a wide range of media?including photography, painting, video, sculpture, and various hybrids?the Croatian artist has developed distinctive methods of incorporating, and refiguring, his own earlier works in new installations.0Along with every exhibition, Maljkovicc translates his work into the form of a book, which becomes another lively medium for the artist. For 'Also on View', he collaborated with designer Toni Uroda to channel the queries of his solo exhibition at the Renaissance Society, which brought together elements from different projects to create a new presentation tailored to the architectural space. The publication features a dynamic array of images, a rendition of the artist talk Maljkovic? delivered on opening night, and an essay by curator Karsten Lund.00Exhibition: The Renaissance Society, Chicago, USA (09.02-07.04.2019).

Atmospheres of Projection by Giuliana Bruno Pdf

Bringing together cultural history, visual studies, and media archaeology, Bruno considers the interrelations of projection, atmosphere, and environment. Projection has long been transforming space, from shadow plays to camera obscuras and magic lantern shows. Our fascination with projection is alive on the walls of museums and galleries and woven into our daily lives. Giuliana Bruno explores the histories of projection and atmosphere in visual culture and their continued importance to contemporary artists who are reinventing the projective imagination with atmospheric thinking and the use of elemental media. To explain our fascination with projection and atmosphere, Bruno traverses psychoanalysis, environmental philosophy, architecture, the history of science, visual art, and moving image culture to see how projective mechanisms and their environments have developed over time. She reveals how atmosphere is formed and mediated, how it can change, and what projection can do to modify a site. In so doing, she gives new life to the alchemic possibilities of transformative projective atmospheres. Showing how their “environmentality” produces sites of exchange and relationality, this book binds art to the ecology of atmosphere.

Art in the Age of the Internet by Eva Respini Pdf

Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today is the first major thematic group exhibition in the United States to examine the radical impact of internet culture on visual art. Featuring 60 artists, collaborations, and collectives, the exhibition is comprised of over 70 works across a variety of mediums, including painting, performance, photography, sculpture, video, web-based projects, and virtual reality. The exhibition is divided into five sections that explore themes such as emergent ideas of the body and notions of human enhancement; the internet as a site of both surveillance and resistance; the circulation and control of images and information; the possibilities for exploring identity and community afforded by virtual domains; and new economies of visibility accelerated by social media. Throughout, the work in the exhibition addresses the internet-age democratization of culture that comprises our current moment. The earliest work in the exhibition is from 1989, the year that Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. This development, and others that followed in quick succession, modernized the internet, and in the process radically changed our way of life--from how we access and generate information, make friends and share experiences, to how we imagine our future bodies and how nations police national security. 1989 also marked a watershed moment across the globe, with significant shifts in politics, geographies, and economies. Events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and protests in Tiananmen Square signaled the beginning of our current globalized age, which cannot be imagined without the internet.

The Hounding of David Oluwale by Kester Aspden Pdf

In May 1969, David Oluwale's body was pulled from the River Aire in Leeds. Eighteen months later, the investigation into his death was to rip apart the Yorkshire police force as two officers were prosecuted for killing the Nigerian immigrant whist in police custody. The police acts of prejudice and violence brought to light through the investigation of 1971 shook the population of Leeds, and thirty nine years on, the details of Oluwale's death still haunt the area. Through The Hounding of David Oluwale, an adaptation of Kester Aspden’s critically acclaimed text, Agboluaje uses carefully selected accounts of Oluwale's life to reveal how an optimistic and much loved showman who loved to dance, became the tragic victim of police persecution and brutality. Adapted as part of the Eclipse Theatre Initiative, a scheme dedicated to raising awareness for the work of aspiring Black dramatists, this play is a gripping drama that unravels the deep rooted prejudice that resides within contemporary society. The Hounding of David Oluwale opened at the West Yorkshire Playhouse at the end of January 2009.

Descartes' Error by Antonio Damasio Pdf

"An ambitious and meticulous foray into the nature of being." -- The Boston Globe A landmark exploration of the relationship between emotion and reason Since Descartes famously proclaimed, "I think, therefore I am," science has often overlooked emotions as the source of a person’s true being. Even modern neuroscience has tended, until recently, to concentrate on the cognitive aspects of brain function, disregarding emotions. This attitude began to change with the publication of Descartes’ Error in 1995. Antonio Damasio—"one of the world’s leading neurologists" (The New York Times)—challenged traditional ideas about the connection between emotions and rationality. In this wondrously engaging book, Damasio takes the reader on a journey of scientific discovery through a series of case studies, demonstrating what many of us have long suspected: emotions are not a luxury, they are essential to rational thinking and to normal social behavior.

Museums, Narratives, and Critical Histories by Kerstin Barndt,Stephan Jaeger Pdf

In response to systemic racism and institutions’ implications in histories of colonialism, nationalism, and exclusion, museum curators have embraced new ways of storytelling to face entangled memories and histories. Critical museum practices have consciously sought to unsettle established forms of representation, break with linear narratives of progress, and experiment with new modes of multivocal, multimedia, and subjective storytelling. The volume features analyses of narratives and narration in museums and heritage institutions today, as well as visions for future museum practices on a local, regional, national, transnational, and global scale. It is divided into three sections: Narrative Theory and Temporality, Ruptures and Repair, and Difficult Memories and Histories. Essays from a variety of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences examine museum practices in history, memorial, anthropological, and art museums across six continents. They develop narratological categories, reflect on immersive and virtual narratives, challenge colonial violence and hegemonic forms of representation, query the performance of heritage, parse exhibition design, and unearth techniques to express narratives of social justice.

Tuesday Or September Or the End by Hannah Black Pdf

"This intimate and funny and abstract fiction uses fable, and unreality, to flood a reader with the real, to remind her what is at stake." -Rachel Kushner During a residency on Fire Island, artist and writer Hannah Black decided to tackle a highly daunting project: the 2020 novel. The result of her efforts, Tuesday of September or the End, is a slim, playful work of speculative fiction. Written in the aftermath of the early months of the pandemic and the uprisings of summer 2020, the novel explores the ruptures of the year with a satirical sci-fi bent. Black chronicles the lives of two characters, Bird and Dog, as they contend with rapidly changing political possibilities during the pandemic while the run of Moley Salamanders (i.e. Bernie Sanders) concludes and aliens finally invade earth. Through a galvanic vision of how the riots of 2020 might have turned revolutionary, Black offers a meditation on collective life. This crucial novel invites readers to consider who we are--and, by extension, what we are here for--when our normal referents are muted, deleted and upended. Hannah Black (born 1981) is a New York-based visual artist, critic and writer from Manchester, England. Her work spans video, text and performance and draws from communist, feminist and Afro-pessimist theory. She is the author of Life (2017, with Juliana Huxtable) and Dark Pool Party (2016). Black is represented by the gallery Arcadia Missa in London and Isabella Bortolozzi in Berlin.

The Universal Addressability of Dumb Things by Mark Leckey,Erik Davis Pdf

Turner Prize-winner artist Mark Leckey, presents the latest in the Hayward Touring celebrated series of artist-curated exhibitions. The Universal Addressability of Dumb Things explores the tenuous boundaries between the virtual and the real, between the 'dumb' and the animate. As modern technology becomes ever more sophisticated and pervasive, objects appear to communicate with us: phones talk back, refrigerators suggest recipes and websites seem to anticipate our desires.Through a conceptual assemblage of archaeological artifacts, contemporary artworks and visionary machines, Leckey proposes an exemplary network of objects – an 'Internet of Things' – all communicating, talking away to one another and, implicitly, looking back at us.The most imaginative, innovative and authoritative thinkers and writers in this field are brought together in this book – practitioners of art-writing, cultural criticism and the history of technology. Three unique, new texts deal with themes including monstrosity, the power of writing and the boundless power of the Internet.Myth, monstrosity, animism and the articulate are the subjects of this highly original statement on our increasingly technologised world.Published on the occasion of the Hayward Touring exhibition in 2013 to Bluecoat, Liverpool (16 February – 14 April), Nottingham Contemporary (27 April – 30 June), and De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-sea (12 July – 20 October).
