Days of 1945-1951 by George Seferis Pdf

In 1967, George Seferis decided the time had finally come to publish at least a portion of his journals. As he was preparing his manuscript for the printer, however, the political climate in Greece became increasingly unpropitious for such an undertaking. Soon he did not feel free to publish in his own country, and in those ominous days there were even some fears for the safety of his unpublished manuscripts. Shortly before his death on September 20, 1971, he entrusted a copy of the journal to his friend Athan Anagnostopoulos with the request that he translate it, publish it, and that Walter Kaiser write the introduction for American readers.

Austerity Britain, 1945-1951 by David Kynaston Pdf

As much as any country, England bore the brunt of Germany's aggression in World War II, and was ravaged in many ways at the war's end. Celebrated historian David Kynaston has written an utterly original, and compellingly readable, account of the following six years, during which the country rebuilt itself. Kynaston's great genius is to chronicle the country's experience from bottom to top: coursing through through the book, therefore, is an astonishing variety of ordinary, contemporary voices, eloquently and passionately evincing the country's remarkable spirit. Judy Haines, a Chingford housewife, gamely endures the tribulations of rationing; Mary King, a retired schoolteacher in Birmingham, observes how well-fed the Queen looks during a royal visit; Henry St. John, a persnickety civil servant in Bristol, is oblivious to anyone's troubles but his own. Together they present a portrait of an indomitable people and Kynaston skillfully links their stories to bigger events thought the country. Their stories also jostle alongside those of more well-known figures like celebrated journalist-to-be John Arlott (making his first radio broadcast), Glenda Jackson, and Doris Lessing, newly arrived from Africa and struck by the leveling poverty of post-war Britain. Kynaston deftly weaves into his story a sophisticated narrative of how the 1945 Labour government shaped the political, economic, and social landscape for the next three decades.

Christian Anarchist by William Marling Pdf

"This is the first biography of Ammon Hennacy, the famous "Christian Anarchist" and colleague of Dorothy Day, whose politics of voluntary poverty and ecological conscience pre-figure today's social justice, ecology, and gender equality movements. Hennacy is a fascinating figure in that evolution; he spent time in prison with Alexander Berkman, lived with the Hopis, romanced Dorothy Day, and started the Joe Hill House of Hospitality in Utah. He also explored social libertarianism with Henry Nunn, the founder of Nunn-Bush Shoes. Not only a fascinating biography, this book is a nuanced study of "unruly equality," as Andrew Cornell calls it, where religion and anarchist theory overlap. Today these forces are rippling through Seattle, Los Angeles, Copenhagen and other world cities, as anarchists try to set up their own social systems"--

O Lord, I Seek Your Countenance: Explorations and Discoveries in Pope Benedict XVI’s Theology by Emery de Gaál Gyulai,Fr Emery de Gaal Pdf

Joseph Ratzinger’s / Pope Benedict XVI’s list of accomplishments is unparalleled in modern times—in both theological and academic terms. He held prestigious teaching positions in Europe’s finest universities. He played a pivotal role in the deliberations of Vatican II and the formulation of its teachings. His theological publications number above fifteen hundred. And he served the Catholic Church as its Pontiff for eight years. In O Lord, I Seek Your Countenance, Fr. Emery de Gaál contends that Ratzinger/ Benedict is reminiscent of a Church Father in his theological virtuosity. But beyond his brilliant intellect, Benedict’s deep Christ-centered spirituality is what gives life and verve to his academic pursuits. Through essays that explore Benedict’s rich and varied theological thought and achievements, from the 1950s through his Jesus of Nazareth trilogy, de Gaál apprehends Ratzinger as a theologian with philosophical sensitivity whose insights have shaped and will continue to shape the course of Catholic theology for years to come.

Baseball's Pivotal Era, 1945-1951 by William Marshall Pdf

With personal interviews of players and owners and with over two decades of research in newspapers and archives, Bill Marshall tells of the players, the pennant races, and the officials who shaped one of the most memorable eras in sports and American history. At the end of World War II, soldiers returning from overseas hungered to resume their love affair with baseball. Spectators still identified with players, whose salaries and off-season employment as postmen, plumbers, farmers, and insurance salesmen resembled their own. It was a time when kids played baseball on sandlots and in pastures, fans followed the game on the radio, and tickets were affordable. The outstanding play of Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Bob Feller, Don Newcombe, Warren Spahn, and many others dominated the field. But perhaps no performance was more important than that of Jackie Robinson, whose entrance into the game broke the color barrier, won him the respect of millions of Americans, and helped set the stage for the civil rights movement. Baseball's Pivotal Era, 1945-1951 also records the attempt to organize the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Mexican League's success in luring players south of the border that led to a series of lawsuits that almost undermined baseball's reserve clause and antitrust exemption. The result was spring training pay, uniform contracts, minimum salary levels, player representation, and a pension plan—the very issues that would divide players and owners almost fifty years later. During these years, the game was led by A.B. "Happy" Chandler, a hand-shaking, speech-making, singing Kentucky politician. Most owners thought he would be easily manipulated, unlike baseball's first commissioner, the autocratic Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis. Instead, Chandler's style led one owner to complain that he was the "player's commissioner, the fan's commissioner, the press and radio commissioner, everybody's commissioner but the men who pay him."
