Dear Uli! by Peter H. Schweitzer Pdf

Life is full of choices, some thrust on us, others of our own making. Sometimes the consequences can mean the difference between life and death. DEAR ULI! is the story of trauma and resilience told through letters to Uli, sent alone to America at age 16, from his family in war-torn Europe. A treasured family collection of more than 750 letters narrates the lives of one German Jewish family, and their anguish, fear and optimism. In 1937, Uli left Berlin and arrived in New York City where he forged a new life for himself. On the other side of the world his twin sister, Isa, and their parents endured the oppressive Nazi regime that culminated with Kristallnacht and Papi’s imprisonment. He was among the fortunate who were released, only to face an uncertain and fraught future. The letters and documents evoke images of this family’s life and the world around them over the course of the war and beyond.

Party Communication in Routine Times of Politics by Simona Bevern Pdf

Simona Bevern addresses the questions what and why political parties communicate in the time between elections, focusing on the dynamic rise and fall of policy issues. Despite the central role of political parties and the alleged importance of communication, only few scholars have taken a closer look at the content and dynamics of parties’ communication in routine times of politics. In this study, interactions between parties’ communication, their party competitors, the legislative agenda and public opinion are studied in Germany for the years 2004–2009, making use of a novel data set and quantitative methods.

Birth Mothers and Transnational Adoption Practice in South Korea by Hosu Kim Pdf

This book illuminates the hidden history of South Korean birth mothers involved in the 60-year-long practice of transnational adoption. The author presents a performance-based ethnography of maternity homes, a television search show, an internet forum, and an oral history collection to develop the concept of virtual mothering, a theoretical framework in which the birth mothers' experiences of separating from, and then reconnecting with, the child, as well as their painful, ambivalent narratives of adoption losses, are rendered, felt and registered. In this, the author refuses a universal notion of motherhood. Her critique of transnational adoption and its relentless effects on birth mothers’ lives points to the everyday, normalized, gendered violence against working-class, poor, single mothers in South Korea’s modern nation-state development and illuminates the biopolitical functions of transnational adoption in managing an "excess" population. Simultaneously, her creative analysis reveals a counter-public, and counter-history, proposing the collective grievances of birth mothers.
