Notorious Murders of the Twentieth Century by Stephen Wade Pdf

The word 'murder' has always attracted widespread local and national media coverage. Once known, the story becomes the subject of discussion in a variety of places throughout the land. Some grisly tales become part of a culture that lives on for generations, whilst others, even by some of the worst serial killers, are soon forgotten. In this book experienced crime historian Stephen Wade has gathered together a collection of murders covering the entire twentieth century. Although famous in their own day, most are now forgotten by the general public, apart from the best true crime enthusiasts. The first conviction for fingerprint evidence, the last hanging in England and murderous husbands and wives are included; but there are also mysteries, unsolved killings and peculiar confessions. Meet the man who poisoned his rival's scones, a wrongful arrest and the acquittal of a good wife who shot her man dead. There are even tales from the Isle of Man, whose legislators continued to issue death penalties in the 1990s.

Folks on the Home Front by Margaret Porter Griffin Pdf

People living in the Midwest in the years 1916-1919 were experiencing rapid change: the first automobiles, the first airplanes, modern weaponry, and a massive, unified war movement that was nothing like their parents or grandparents had ever seen. A young Indiana National Guardsman, Jesse Covell, began to give glimpses of military life to family and friends in his letters: to one girl, Margaret Beck, in particular. They corresponded as troops were sent to the Mexican border and then to training camps to prepare to go overseas. Everything took more time then: growing their own food and crops, cooking, cleaning house, and going places. They all sat down and wrote what was happening where they were, which included poignant accounts of how Spanish Influenza was affecting almost everyone. Letter writing was an art form from the salutation to the closing, with authors particular about their longhand script. News of home was important to soldiers in camp. Jesse’s brother had forty bushels of potatoes in the cellar…”and they ain’t all dug yet.” His sister was sending maple syrup from trees at the farm to him, and his mother, a homemade cold remedy. There was no cure for the diphtheria which took the lives of two young sisters in a week; neighbors suddenly died, as well as soldiers on U.S. soil and abroad, in the flu epidemic. Sweethearts like Margaret waited and wondered. As they hoped for leaves, there was constant worry about when batteries would be ordered to join the Allied Forces in France. They were planning for the future, but didn’t know what this terrible war would do to change it. On the happy side, they could attend a medicine show, a county fair, a silent Charlie Chaplin movie, or a box social. When they really celebrated on the night of the Armistice, they put together an outrageously decorated truck to drive through the center of town, one shotgun blast after another. Oh, how they loved baseball. Organized teams played in the country at the four corners, but Mother didn’t care for it because they’d hit balls into her field and have to go get them. And they saved everything: old woolen shirts, blossoms from fading lilacs, and of course, the letters, which tell us a story we wouldn’t know otherwise.

An Orchid for Sarah Grace by Krista S. Jakubik Pdf

Growing up, I was told never to ask my Dad about his time overseas in World War II. After his passing in July 2003, my mother came across an old shoe box that had been pushed to the back of his closet. Upon opening the box, she found over one hundred letters he had written to her while stationed in Europe. After reading a few letters it became quite clear why he never wanted to talk about the war. Although censored, these letters spoke of his love for my Mother, his belief in God and his wanting to come home. Particularly difficult to read is his account of where he was and what he did as a soldier in Europe.

Barbarossa by Jonathan Dimbleby Pdf

A SUNDAY TIMES TOP TEN BESTSELLER 'The best single-volume account of the Barbarossa campaign to date' Andrew Roberts, author of Churchill: Walking with Destiny 'A page-turning descent into Hell and back . . . this fresh and compelling account of Hitler's failed invasion of the Soviet Union should be on everyone's reading list for 2021' Dr Amanda Foreman, author of A World on Fire _______________________________ The largest military operation in history. The turning point of the Second World War. The most important year of the twentieth century. Operation Barbarossa, Hitler's invasion of Russia in June 1941, aimed at nothing less than a war of extermination to annihilate Soviet communism, liquidate the Jews and create Lebensraum for the German master race. But it led to the destruction of the Third Reich, and was cataclysmic for Germany with millions of men killed, wounded or registered as missing in action. It was this colossal mistake -- rather than any action in Western Europe -- that lost Hitler the Second World War. Drawing on hitherto unseen archival material, including previously untranslated Russian sources, Jonathan Dimbleby puts Barbarossa in its proper place in history for the first time. From its origins in the ashes of the First World War to its impact on post-war Europe, and covering the military, political and diplomatic story from all sides, he paints a full and vivid picture of this monumental campaign whose full nature and impact has remained unexplored. Written with authority and humanity, Barbarossa is a masterwork that transforms our understanding of the Second World War and of the twentieth century. _______________________________ 'Superb. . . stays with you long after you have finished' Henry Hemming, bestselling author of Our Man in New York 'A chilling account of war at its worst' Bear Grylls

Mind as Machine by Margaret A. Boden Pdf

Cognitive science is among the most fascinating intellectual achievements of the modern era. The quest to understand the mind is an ancient one. But modern science has offered new insights and techniques that have revolutionized this enquiry. Oxford University Press now presents a masterlyhistory of the field, told by one of its most eminent practitioners.Psychology is the thematic heart of cognitive science, which aims to understand human (and animal) minds. But its core theoretical ideas are drawn from cybernetics and artificial intelligence, and many cognitive scientists try to build functioning models of how the mind works. In that sense,Margaret Boden suggests, its key insight is that mind is a (very special) machine. Because the mind has many different aspects, the field is highly interdisciplinary. It integrates psychology not only with cybernetics/AI, but also with neuroscience and clinical neurology; with the philosophy ofmind, language, and logic; with linguistic work on grammar, semantics, and communication; with anthropological studies of cultures; and with biological (and A-Life) research on animal behaviour, evolution, and life itself. Each of these disciplines, in its own way, asks what the mind is, what itdoes, how it works, how it develops---and how it is even possible.Boden traces the key questions back to Descartes's revolutionary writings, and to the ideas of his followers--and his radical critics--through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Her story shows how controversies in the development of experimental physiology, neurophysiology, psychology, evolutionary biology, embryology, and logic are still relevant today. Then she guides the reader through the complex interlinked paths along which the study of mind developed in the twentieth century. Cognitive science covers all mental phenomena: not just 'cognition' (knowledge), but also emotion, personality, psychopathology, social communication, religion, motor action, and consciousness. In each area, Boden introduces the key ideas and researchers and discusses those philosophical critics who see cognitive science as fundamentally misguided. And she sketches the waves of resistance andacceptance on the part of the media and general public, showing how these have affected the development of the field. No one else could tell this story as Boden can: she has been a member of the cognitive science community since the late-1950s, and has known many of its key figures personally. Her narrative is written in a lively, swift-moving style, enriched by the personal touch of someone who knows the story atfirst hand. Her history looks forward as well as back: besides asking how state-of-the-art research compares with the hopes of the early pioneers, she identifies the most promising current work. Mind as Machine will be a rich resource for anyone working on the mind, in any academic discipline, whowants to know how our understanding of mental capacities has advanced over the years.
