Death of the Covenant Code: Capital Punishment in Old Greek Exodus in Light of Greco-Egyptian Law by Joel Korytko Pdf

Many laws in the Old Greek translation of the Covenant Code do not say the same thing as the Hebrew text. In the past, various idiosyncrasies in the Greek translation of laws that involve the death penalty had been glossed over and considered stylistic variations or grammatical outliers. However, when the text-linguistic features of the Greek translation are compared to contemporary literary, documentary, and legal Greek sources, new readings emerge: cursing a parent is no longer punishable by death; a law about bestiality becomes a law about animal husbandry; the authority of certain legal commands is deregulated. This work explores these and other new readings in comparison with contemporary Greco-Egyptian law.

The Sound of Sheer Silence and the Killing State by Millard Lind Pdf

This book unambiguously opposes capital punishment as the immoral act of "the killing state." Lind traces Yahweh's saving action and steadfast love for Israel and the world from Moses to Elijah to Jesus, and shows how they are to be emulated on the societal level by obedience to covenant law. This leads to his conclusion that capital punishment is to be opposed because from the perspective of the God revealed in the Bible-determined in Lind's view by the careful reading of the text he has attempted here-capital punishment is simply wrong.

Capital Punishment and the Bible by Gardner C. Hanks Pdf

"This book goes beyond proof-text arguments to examine biblical statements about capital punishment in their historical contexts and for present meaning. Does the use of capital punishment in the USA meet Old Testament standards for fairness? How did Jesus and the early church extend God's love in restorative justice? Hanks convincingly shows that the use of the death penalty is not consistent with Jesus' call for love and forgiveness." --from back cover.

A Law Book for the Diaspora by John Van Seters Pdf

The foundation for all scholarly study in biblical law is the shared assumption that the Covenant Code, as contained in Exodus 20:23-22:33 is the oldest code of laws in the Hebrew Bible, and that all other laws are later revisions of that code. The author of this text strikes that foundation.

The End of Sacrifice by John Howard Yoder Pdf

John Howard Yoder (1927-1997), who was a professor at Notre Dame University and Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, was one of the 20th century's leading theologians. Scholars continue to study his writings on pacifism and other subjects. The End of Sacrifice brings together four decades of Yoder's published and unpublished writings on capital punishment. He engaged in sophisticated biblical, sociological, and historical analysis in order to demonstrate that from ancient society until today capital punishment is an inherently cultic sacrificial rite. Since the death of Jesus brought a decisive end to all sacrifices for sin, Yoder argues, Christians should proclaim the abolition of the death penalty. Its advocates should no longer claim biblical validation. In doing so, Yoder also makes a persuasive case for proactive Christian witness to the state. He calls the church to proclaim the end of sacrifice to public officials who are responsible for carrying out capital punishment. "John Howard Yoder was unique in how he brings together both the biblical and sociological roots of the practice of capital punishment. Many Christian works focus on the former, whereas other works focus exclusively on the latter."—John C. Nugent

Restarting Exodus; A Covenant View of the Exodus by F. Michael Colacuori Pdf

Many books have been written about the Exodus. Most seem to place the greatest emphasis on understanding the historical aspects of that event. Restarting Exodus will take a different approach. The emphasis will be on understanding the spiritual picture being presented. While most people understand that the Exodus is telling of the great spiritual deliverance of the Hebrews, they underestimate the degree to which the spiritual is incorporated. Here you will find the Exodus to have been “restarted” using covenant theology. The covenant view will cause many portions of the Exodus to come alive with fresh ideas and an understanding from the theological perspective. If you want to read a book based on traditional thinking, this is the wrong book. Only read this book if you are interested in a fresh look into the Exodus.
