Deep in the Hearts of Texans by C. R. Wilson Pdf

The novel "Deep in the Hearts of Texans" takes place in the 1800's after the Civil War. It is a story of a group of men who have a friendship as in the old Greek story of Damon and Pythias. The men live on a ranch that is owned by the man who was their Major during the war. Jake Evans and the Major were longtime friends. Red was the young man who had followed Jake; Jericho likewise followed Red. Louis Calvin and Johnny Meyers were boys taken in by Jericho. All of them tried to follow in the steps of Jake. He was thought of by many as a god of the plains. The Major has a young daughter, and his best friend Jake, an unwritten partner, has a son only a few years older. After Jake and his wife pass on, Matt is raised by the Major and his wife. When the Major's wife passed away a few years later, he realizes that his daughter and this boy he thought of as a son are showing an interest in each other. Cindy always knew that Matt was the love of her life. Matt has recently come to the realization that he is falling in love with Cindy. The Major's reaction to this knowledge puts into motion events that no one could predict. The story takes you through gunfights, friendships, love and searches through rugged terrain with many obstacles. It also explores the deep feelings felt at the loss of ones who can never be replaced. Travel with these men through dangers and heartaches to find Matt and in doing so, find there is more to life than the ranch. Their encounters are not only with Indians and killers, but with some lovely women as well. All this shows that love can blossom in adversities and touch deep in the hearts of Texans. If you enjoyed the story, please leave a review. Other CR Wilson books are the following Novellas "The Strange Husband" *** "Moon on the River" *** "the Days of Rains" (the Legend of Johnny Rains) *** "The Many Trails of Garrett Marshall" Short Stories "For Love or Money" *** "Just in Time for Christmas" *** Many Trails"

Mennonites in Texas by Laura L. Camden Pdf

With their distinctive head coverings, plain dress, and quiet, unassuming demeanor, the Mennonites are a distinctive presence within the often flamboyant and proud people of Texas. If you have seen them at a gas station, in a grocery store, or even at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport, you have probably taken note and wondered how they came to be there. In this photographic tour of two Texas Mennonite communities, separated by almost 450 miles, Laura L. Camden and Susan Gaetz Duarte introduce you to the Beachy Amish Mennonites of Lott, a small community of approximately 160 people in Central Texas, and the very different Mennonites of Seminole, a West Texas farming community of more than five thousand residents and five separate congregations, several of which still speak the Mennonite Low German. Spending more than a year getting to know the families, participating in day-to-day activities, and photographing the unique culture of the communities, Camden and Gaetz Duarte developed deep insight into not just the religious beliefs but the family relationships, role expectations, and daily routines of these people. Through their camera lenses, they offer others a touchingly intimate view of a unique lifestyle seldom experienced by outsiders. In a foreword, former governor Ann Richards identifies the book as part of both the long photographic tradition in Texas and the tradition of cultural and religious diversity in the state. Mark L. Louden's introduction provides the historical backgrounds of Mennonites in Europe, their core beliefs, and their development into branches in North America. Dennis Carlyle Darling offers insightful comments on the photography that allows an intimate, respectful view of the people, their lifestyle, and their culture.

Texas Divided by James Marten Pdf

The Civil War hardly scratched the Confederate state of Texas. Thousands of Texans died on battlefields hundreds of miles to the east, of course, but the war did not destroy Texas's farms or plantations or her few miles of railroads. Although unchallenged from without, Confederate Texans faced challenges from within -- from fellow Texans who opposed their cause. Dissension sprang from a multitude of seeds. It emerged from prewar political and ethnic differences; it surfaced after wartime hardships and potential danger wore down the resistance of less-than-enthusiastic rebels; it flourished, as some reaped huge profits from the bizarre war economy of Texas. Texas Divided is neither the history of the Civil War in Texas, nor of secession or Reconstruction. Rather, it is the history of men dealing with the sometimes fragmented southern society in which they lived -- some fighting to change it, others to preserve it -- and an examination of the lines that divided Texas and Texans during the sectional conflict of the nineteenth century.

Tired of the boring chain restaurant scene? Recipes from Historic Texas will please your palate and nourish your mind. Enjoy a unique bit of Texas history by visiting a wide variety of restaurants located in unusual historic settings-a gritsmill, a Dr. Pepper bottling plant, a church, and a funeral home, to name a few. Two recipes from each establishment are offered to form a well balanced selection of Texas cuisine. A brief history of each of the 70 restaurants is included, followed by basic information such as hours of operation, location, and other important details. The recipes themselves are an eclectic mix of the simple and the exotic, from the Cowboy Omelet at Beaumont's The Pig Stand to the Jicama Salad at Dallas's famous Mansion on Turtle Creek. Two indexes, one to restaurants and the other to recipes, make the book equally useful as both a travel guide and a cook book.

Texas by Carmen Boullosa Pdf

"Mexico's greatest woman writer."—Roberto Bolaño "A luminous writer . . . Boullosa is a masterful spinner of the fantastic"—Miami Herald An imaginative writer in the tradition of Juan Rulfo, Jorge Luis Borges, and Cesar Aira, Carmen Boullosa shows herself to be at the height of her powers with her latest novel. Loosely based on the little-known 1859 Mexican invasion of the United States, Texas is a richly imagined evocation of the volatile Tex-Mex borderland. Boullosa views border history through distinctly Mexican eyes, and her sympathetic portrayal of each of her wildly diverse characters—Mexican ranchers and Texas Rangers, Comanches and cowboys, German socialists and runaway slaves, Southern belles and dancehall girls—makes her storytelling tremendously powerful and absorbing. Shedding important historical light on current battles over the Mexican–American frontier while telling a gripping story with Boullosa's singular prose and formal innovation, Texas marks the welcome return of a major writer who has previously captivated American audiences and is poised to do so again. Carmen Boullosa (b. 1954) is one of Mexico's leading novelists, poets, and playwrights. Author of seventeen novels, her books have been translated into numerous world languages. Recipient of numerous prizes and honors, including a Guggenheim fellowship, Boullosa is currently Distinguished Lecturer at City College of New York. Samantha Schnee is founding editor and chairman of the board of Words Without Borders. She has also been a senior editor with Zoetrope, and her translations have appeared in the Guardian, Granta, and the New York Times.
