Semantic Interpretation of Deep Structure for Natural-language Computer Input by Sara Regina Murphey Pdf

The theory of transformational grammars represents the linguists' most elaborate attempt to date to formalize the syntactic structure of English. The result of analyzing a sentence according to a transformational grammar is a so-called 'deep structure, ' which expresses various information about the constituent portions of the sentence in a treelike form. In view of the relatively high state of development of the transformational theory, it is natural to use it as the basis for the 'front end' of an English-understanding program. The system discussed in the report provides a general method of interpretation of transformationally parsed sentences for use in question-answering. It is based on a general scheme for using the information contained in the deep structures to interrogate a data base. The primary effort is aimed at handling a wide variety of complex syntactic structures, with particular concern for the problem of embedded structures. The system provides a general facility for handling syntactic sturctures, to which a user can add routines corresponding to the specific nouns, verbs, and adjectives he wants to use. The present implementation includes a vocabulary suitable for dealing with sets; the noun, verb, and adjective routines for this area of discourse constitute about 10% of the entire program.

Ideology and Linguistic Theory by John A. Goldsmith,Geoffrey J. Huck Pdf

In The Ideological Structure of Linguistic Theory Geoffrey J. Huck and John A. Goldsmith provide a revisionist account of the development of ideas about semantics in modern theories of language, focusing particularly on Chomsky's very public rift with the Generative Semanticists about the concept of Deep Structure.

The Cambridge Handbook of Generative Syntax by Marcel den Dikken Pdf

Syntax – the study of sentence structure – has been at the centre of generative linguistics from its inception and has developed rapidly and in various directions. The Cambridge Handbook of Generative Syntax provides a historical context for what is happening in the field of generative syntax today, a survey of the various generative approaches to syntactic structure available in the literature and an overview of the state of the art in the principal modules of the theory and the interfaces with semantics, phonology, information structure and sentence processing, as well as linguistic variation and language acquisition. This indispensable resource for advanced students, professional linguists (generative and non-generative alike) and scholars in related fields of inquiry presents a comprehensive survey of the field of generative syntactic research in all its variety, written by leading experts and providing a proper sense of the range of syntactic theories calling themselves generative.

Language and Mind by Noam Chomsky Pdf

Presents a collection of essays on language and mind. This book brings the author's influential approach into the twenty-first century. The chapters 1-6 present his early work on the nature and acquisition of language as a genetically-endowed, biological system, the rules and principles of which we acquire an internalized knowledge.

Aspects of the Theory of Syntax by Noam Chomsky Pdf

Chomsky proposes a reformulation of the theory of transformational generative grammar that takes recent developments in the descriptive analysis of particular languages into account. Beginning in the mid-fifties and emanating largely form MIT, an approach was developed to linguistic theory and to the study of the structure of particular languages that diverges in many respects from modern linguistics. Although this approach is connected to the traditional study of languages, it differs enough in its specific conclusions about the structure and in its specific conclusions about the structure of language to warrant a name, "generative grammar." Various deficiencies have been discovered in the first attempts to formulate a theory of transformational generative grammar and in the descriptive analysis of particular languages that motivated these formulations. At the same time, it has become apparent that these formulations can be extended and deepened. The major purpose of this book is to review these developments and to propose a reformulation of the theory of transformational generative grammar that takes them into account. The emphasis in this study is syntax; semantic and phonological aspects of the language structure are discussed only insofar as they bear on syntactic theory.

Operators and Nucleus by Pieter A. M. Seuren Pdf

Dr Seuren's study deals with the problem of presenting an adequate model of grammatical description. The model he proposes conforms in its main outlines to the transformational generative grammar established by Chomsky, but differs in important respects. These mainly affect that part of Chomsky's syntactic component known as the 'base', which generates basic or 'deep' structures. In the model of the base proposed here two main constituents are distinguished for every deep structure representation of a sentence, vis-a-vis the operators and the nucleus. The deep structure of a sentence is thus seen to be very similar to the logical structure of a proposition. The arguments given in support of this analysis are based on mainly on considerations of simplicity and semantic adequacy.

Using Language by John T. Kearns Pdf

In a pioneer study of how language is actually used, Dr. Kearns combines the rigor of formal logic with a detailed analysis of natural language patterns. Through this double focus, he develops artificial languages that are syntactically more similar to the spoken word than first-order language itself. Numerous diagrams illustrate the evolution of these artificial languages, which represent a significant contribution to both the fields of linguistics and logic. The book begins by delineating a theory of the structures of intentional acts and then applies this to the special case of linguistic acts. Given an understanding of the meanings of component expressions, we can use our knowledge of linguistic structure to determine the meaning of a complex expression. An innovative discussion of semantics is subdivided into theories of three "semantic dimensions": representational meaning, inferential meaning, and truth conditions. Drawing upon these analyses the speech act theory of this book purposes that the meaning of a sentence (sentential act) is to be explained wholly in terms of the meanings of component expressions (acts) and the structure of the sentence.
