This report compares the prosecution of child sexual abuse cases reported to the police in adulthood compared with those reported in childhood. Drawing on police and court data from New South Wales and South Australia over a recent 20 year period, it compares: trends in recorded reports to police; trends in the numbers of prosecutions; factors associated with the matter proceeding from a report to the police to prosecution - such as delay, complainant characteristics, offender relationship, and type of offence; and the likelihood of cases resulting in a conviction. The difference in the rate, grounds, and outcomes of appeals in New South Wales alone are also investigated. In New South Wales, just over 80% of reports of child sexual offences were made during childhood - around 66% were reported within 12 months of the incident, but nearly 25% were not reported until five or more years later. The remaining 20% cent of all reports were delayed into adulthood, with implications for forensic and evidential procedures.
