Excerpt from The Demand and Price Situation: November, 1955 Total demands on the economy and output expanded rapidly during the past year. The gross product rose by 9 percent to a record rate of 392 billion dol lars in the third quarter of 1955. Prices on the average have been fairly stable However, prices of industrial products have been rising, especially in the last 3 or 1+ months while prices of farm products have declined further. Prospects for further expansion in demand point to a continued rise in economic activity in the coming year. The gross national product and consumer incomes for 1956, as a whole, are likely to be higher than in 1955. Demands in some sectors of the econonw, notably business demand for inventories and consumer demand for auto mobiles and housing, may not be up to the high levels of 1955. But this is expected to be offset by continued expansion in business investment in plant and equipment, a stronger consumer market for most goods and services, and increased expenditures by State and local Governments. Excerpt from Demand and Price Situation: February 1967 The substantial rise in aggregate economic activity in 1966 increased the flow of disposable income to consumers by about 7 percent to $505 billion. Consumers responded with substantially larger purchases of durable goods, non durable goods, and services. Expenditures for food rose 7 percent to $91 bil lion and accounted for about percent of disposable personal income, down slightly from last year to a new low rate. But higher overall retail prices siphoned off a larger than usual amount of the rise in consumer income. Retail food prices jumped 5 percent in 1966, the largest annual increase since 1951. Prices were higher particularly for meats, eggs, dairy products, and bread. Total per capita food consumption rose about 1 percent, but retail food prices also rose reflecting the strength of consumer demand. Retail prices in coming months will likely stabilize as large increases in supplies of poultry, eggs, citrus products, and pork are expected in the first half of 1967.
